Day 1 – FDFA Convention and Trade Show

The FDFA Convention and Trade Show is once again taking place in downtown Toronto, at the HyattRegency.

After the morning session, in which government relations were discussed, lunch was sponsored andpresented by Diageo. We began with a whisky tasting of three different expressions of Johnny Walker,in part to highlight the flavors of the newest duty free exclusive offering from the brand: JohnnyWalker Island Green. This whisky had the distinctive nose of the smoky Islay single malt Caol Ila,which makes up a big part of the liquid, but the flavor was milder, fruitier and sweeter.

The afternoon session began with a highly informative, entertaining and enlightening talk about theretail channel in Canada and beyond, by Diane Brisbois, President and CEO of the Retail Council of

Canada.Then came a lengthy discussion about the future shape of the FDFA convention – how will itlook? Where and when will it be? What can be done to ensure that those who take part, whethersuppliers or operators, get the most out of the event? These questions will be answered in the comingweeks, and are especially pertinent as the association has lost members in the past year.

The new board of directors was also selected. The board previously comprised seven people and it willnow comprise five. Positions will be announced tomorrow.
