THAILANDA medical innovation in the form of a smart robot has been helping the elderly in Thailand, with a security feature which can detect falls and send alarms to the elderly person’s family members via Bluetooth. It even has 3D digital camera technology to capture images, and can respond to voice commands to provide swift, convenient, accessible care.

VIETNAMTo help over 450,000 fish and shrimp pond farmers who were mostly isolated and did manual work, online platform Tep Bac Co. was set up in 2013 to enable farmers to learn from experts, share aqua-cultural knowledge and view pond data collected from Internet-of-Things-enabled hardware devices.

SINGAPOREFacial recognition is gaining traction as a contact-less form of identification for people checking into hotels and even to speed up processes at immigration checkpoints.

These are just three stories of innovation arising from Southeast Asia.

Fueled by desire for a better future, the economic region with its large, literate and digitally-enabled young population of over 640 million people is well on its way to becoming one of the most promising and exciting economies in the world.

EMERGING STRONGLY

EXPLOSION OF ASEAN’S DIGITAL ECONOMY

SPARKS OF INNOVATION IN SOUTHEAST ASIAWith GDP of all countries in Southeast Asia growing at an average of about 5 percent in the last 5 years, experts predict that Southeast Asia will continue to do well in 2021.

The International Monetary Fund projects growth for five Southeast Asian countries – Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – to hit 7.8 percent in 2021. The Asian Development Bank predicts that as a whole, all 10 countries in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) will grow 4.7 percent in 2021 .

As a region, ASEAN is currently the 7th largest economic bloc in the world. What remains constant is its wealth of opportunity, driven by fundamentals like rapid urbanization leading to a growing middle-class with buying power, a young population and its thirst for technology.

The economies of Southeast Asian

countries will continue to perform

strongly in 2021.

Southeast Asia’s digital economy

will expand 6.4 times from

US$31 billion in 2015 to US$197 billion by 2025.

“It’s been years since we had a show like this, and it is really what the industry needs. I saw many new products and technologies.”

- Visitor Liaw Kee Lim, the Managing Director of Acoustic Calibration Service.

Southeast Asia’s digital economy – a collective term for all economic transactions that occur online – will expand exponentially.

Many developing ASEAN economies are already leap-frogging old models. For instance, moving straight from dollars to mobile payments (skipping credit cards).

World events have inadvertently accelerated this transition, as more economic activity has shifted to the cloud and businesses have created innovative solutions in response.

This would be particularly marked in countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam, which are already on the leading edge of the mobile-app-based digital economy.

All this would brighten the growth and development prospects for Southeast Asian economies come 2021 and beyond.
