Did you join us for our 92nd Annual Awards Luncheon, presented by Rabobank? (If you said,“Yes,”then we nod approvingly. If you said“No,”then we won’t put a guilt trip on you as long as you promise you’ll come next year.) The event started with yours truly, Mr. Chamber CEO, making a joke that clearly played to the masses of Rotarians in the room. Hey, I’m shameless! Then Event Chair Mark Faylor, who should be nicknamed Captain Enthusiasm, and 2013 Board Chair LuAnn Meador aimed for some Vaudevillian humor. They may not be Sonny and Cher, but we love them anyway. The speeches by presenters and honorees were light and humorous, but also heartfelt. Emcees Marc Cota-Robles and Jasmine Viel entertained the crowd by claiming that they were going to share something personal, that they had been trying to do since they got married less than two years ago… AWARDS - CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 Chamber Honors Leaders at Annual Awards Luncheon by Paul Farmer, Chamber President/CEO Wise people understand that successful Economic Development underlies just about everything else: quality of life, community safety, economic opportunity, support for non- profits…it all comes back to having a growing and vital business environment. To lead our local efforts, the County of Monterey recently hired David Spaur as its Economic Development Director. “I look forward to returning to the Coast and serving again on the Central Coast Marketing Team where I was once Chair while working for the Economic Vitality Corporation in San Luis Obispo,” David shared. “My goal is to engage workforce opportunities, programs and incentives in such a way as to attract the right type of investment to Monterey County and [to assist] all of the Cities to realize their economic development goals.” Blessed with a very likable personality, David is a certified Community & Economic Developer (CEcD) whose skills and experience include Urban Planning and Redevelopment. He started his Economic Development career with the Modesto Chamber of Commerce after working for Advanced Micro Devices in Sunnyvale. Remove redundancies and transitions like “therefore,” “with this in mind,” and anything that sounds like the legal department wrote it. “Heretofore,” and “in summary,” don’t belong.3. Remember who you’re writing for and write specifically for them, as if you were having a conversation.4. Remove buzzwords and define acronyms, or just spell out the words. No one is impressed when they don’t understand what you’re saying—you appear arrogant.5. If you’re worried about sounding undignified or unprofessional, change your perspective and worry instead about sounding stuffy and dull—you’re more likely to err by being too conservative.6. Focus on the high points. Cut descriptions you could give during a sales call.
