University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Comm Description: Serve as editor-in-chief for the department’s external communication, including an annual magazine with 9,000 circulation and newsletters. Project assistant—Summer 2013-present. University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research Description: Assist in the media training of university faculty to help them be able to present their research succinctly and accurately to all forms of journalists. Training begins with a pre-interview to break down strengths and weaknesses. Later, all trainers and participating faculty meet as a group to discuss strategies and techniques of media presentation. From there, I split off with individual faculty to work on their messages. Training concludes with faculty filming messages about their work that will be included on their university faculty websites. Project assistant—Summer 2013. University of Iowa Graduate College Description: Provided journalism-themed multimedia content focused on the research of graduate students for the relaunched website of the graduate college. Consulted with department on the upgrading of their audio, visual, and digital equipment.

Sports Media Survey—Summer 2014; Fall 2011 Course #: 019:169:001 Course description: Students will survey current and recent storylines in sports media. They will examine the rise, fall and rise of LeBron James; the media’s handling of Michael Jordan; coverage of Danica Patrick; and Hawkeye football in the digital age. In this reading-intensive course, students will be introduced to the work of sports media's past and present greats (and not so greats). Students will engage in discussions and cordially debate current events in sports and sports media, as well as topics such as anonymous sources; the differences between covering college, professional and high school athletics; and online sports media, including blogs and social media

Sports and Entertainment Blogging—Summer 2013 Course #: 019:120:002 Course description: In 2013, sports are entertainment. The motives of public who consume sports and/or entertainment run parallel: escapism, distraction, appreciation, and identity. This production- and reading-intensive course will explore the successful methods of sports and entertainment

blogging – celebrity, movies, TV, music and, of course, sports. Students will learn how the many tools at their disposal work together to create an escapist experience for online users. We also will discuss the business end of blogging, from funding your site to monetizing it.

Blogging and Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Sports Media—Summer 2012 Course #: 019:169:003 Course description: Students will take advantage of Internet technologies to identify entrepreneurial opportunities within sports media and communication. They will explore the successes and failures of current and recent attempts within sports media innovation. And students will learn to use blogging as a professional tool to build community and develop a brand.

Media Writing—Spring 2012; Spring 2011 Course #: 019:169:EXW Course description: In this online course taught through a virtual classroom, students will learn the basics of writing for media and business publications in print and online. You will be introduced to the basics of writing articles for news sites and magazines, of writing press releases and marketing pieces, of writing for business-to-business publications, and of creating and maintaining a viable blog. This practice and survey course helps introduce students to writing within booming mass communications industries, from the media to marketing and strategic communications.

Specialized Reporting and Writing: Sports Writing—Spring 2012; Fall 2011; Fall 2010; Fall 2009; Summer 2009; Spring 2009; Fall 2008 Course #: 019:120:003 Course description: This writing-intensive course helps students focus their skills by exploring sports writing, social networking and self-marketing online and in print. Using different story forms –web, magazine, narrative, blogs, deadline, Q&As – students will learn how to write human-interest and socially significant stories, embrace the freedom and responsibilities of web journalism, and survive in a genre increasingly driven by rapid interaction with its audience. Students will survey all storylines of modern sports communications, including sports business, sports and crime, sports marketing, the evolution of nationally driven stories, and sports celebrity as cultural phenomenon. You will be critiqued by the instructor and each other.

Advanced Digital Media Workshop—Spring 2011 Course #: 019:173:003 Course description: Students will work in teams to plan and launch multimedia sports websites. They will learn about podcasting, content management systems and the basics of viral sports marketing. Students will write for the web, produce slideshows and embrace search engine optimization (SEO). The course will be heavy on professional speakers from the world of sports media, including ESPN, Yahoo! Sports, and college sports information departments. The course requires no previous technical skills.
