DAVID & REVA LOGAN CENTER FOR THE ARTS Technical Research Project Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects is a firm based in New York and was founded in 1974. Tod and Billie are a husband-and-wife team. Williams studied at Princeton University and worked under for Richard Meier for six years prior to co-founding this new firm. Tsien studied at Yale and UCLA and has a background as a painter and a teacher. Both Billie and Tod continue to teach at the university level in conjunction with owning their own firm. They also serve on many Art boards and speak worldwide. Although they have a list of well-known projects, their firm is kept to a maximum of only thirty people. Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects was awarded the 2013 AIA Architecture Firm Award. This award is one of the highest honors that can be achieved by a firm and positions them at a very distinguished and respected level. They’ve also received 21 other local AIA award and 8 national AIA awards. Their critics admire their use of materials and their focus on details and materiality. This couple has focused on buildings mainly with cultural and institutional program. Museums, school and non-profits. They are acknowledged for designing in a simple and elegant way that is responsive to the site and surroundings. This ideal is seen in the Logan Center especially. They are also known to deal with raw materials like concrete in wood in a unique way that is both poetic and detail-oriented. The Logan Center shows this use of material in a specific way. Some of their most known projects include the Rifkind House in New York, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library in California, the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, and the Folk Art Museum in New York. Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Architects Philosophy “We see architecture as an act of profound optimism. Its foundation lies in believing that it is possible to make place on the earth that can give a sense of grace to life - and believing that that matters. It is what we have to give and it is what we leave behind.” The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts was completed in 2012 through a $35 million gift from the Logan family. The 184,000 square foot building aims to function as a hub for the arts scene at the university and to become a destination for the larger community. Classrooms and support spaces for music, visual arts, theater, performance, digital arts and media are all provided for in this one location. The goal is to provide a space where multiple disciplines can collaborate and mix in an organic way. It also responds to the desire of Williams and Tsien to emphasize site conditions, use natural light as a design element, and use materiality in a poetic way. The idea of this building being a hub and reenergizing the surrounding arts community is revealed through the architecture. The tower component of the center is described as a “mixing bowl for the arts.” The sectional quality of the tower truly shows this mixing and interdisciplinary integration. The three main performance spaces share an open, accessible lobby at ground level. This coordination and shared space will serve to enhance and reinforce the idea of collaboration and gathering at a “hub.” KIM MEZGER & SIENNA MATHIESEN Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts Barnes Foundation Tod Williams and Billie Tsien Folk Art Museum C.
