David B. Burr, PhD FASEB Board of Directors Professor Burr spent three years at the University of Kansas before joining West Virginia University in 1980 as Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Orthopedic Surgery. He joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 1990 as Chair of Anatomy (1990-2010). In 2012, he was appointed an Indiana University Distinguished Professor, and currently serves as Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at IUPUI. Dr. Burr’s research activities involve the causes of skeletal fragility in osteoporosis and in Type 2 diabetes. He has been a leader in studying the role of skeletal fatigue and microdamage-mediated remodeling in bone biomechanical and physiological adaptation. He authored more than 250 peer-reviewed research articles, 50 book chapters and reviews, and five books on the structure, function and mechanics of bone. Dr. Burr served as President of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons (2001-2002), the American Association of Anatomists (2007-2009), and the Orthopaedic Research Society (2008-2009). In 2004, he became the Director of the Sun Valley International Workshop on Skeletal Tissue Biology. He is an Editor for Bone and Editor-in-Chief for Current Osteoporosis Reports. He serves on the editorial boards for five other scientific journals. Dr. Burr teaches Gross Anatomy to medical students and physical therapy students. In 2003, he developed a new course, “Basic Bone Biology,” which he co-directs, for the graduate curriculum at Indiana University. He has been involved in teaching surgical anatomy to orthopaedic residents, as well as courses for biomedical engineering, anthropology, and physical therapy. As a member of the Japan Implant Practice Society, he offers anatomical training and lectures in Surgical Anatomy for Implant Placement in Guam and Tokyo. As Chair of the Dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Indiana University, he developed the first Educational Track PhD program for students wishing to pursue scholarly work in education and teaching in the anatomical subdisciplines.
