Welcome back! Term 4 is typically myfavourite time of year because there are somany exciting things happening. This termthe Student Council and Peer Mentors haveorganised lunch time activities for Year 7students including touch, soccer, boardgames and a handball competition.Students are encouraged to participate to

We also have our Positive Education Rewards and RecognitionProgram running this term where students receive stickers fordisplaying positive behaviour. At the end of the term we willhave a movie and pizza day where students who have above95% attendance and nine rows of stickers will be invited toattend.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) 2016

In Semester 1 2016, we are planning to begin a BYOD trialfor students enrolled in Years 7, 11 and 12 to bring personallaptops to school, and allow these devices to access theschool’s computer network. The remaining year levels will alsojoin the trial in Semester 2 2016.

You may be asking why we are offering a BYOD program.Over the last few years it has become evident that daily accessto a laptop can significantly assist students in their learning.Note that access to technology was previously supported bythe National Secondary School Computer Fund (NSSCF), butthis program has come to an end. Furthermore, parents andstudents have indicated that they are keen to use their existingpersonally owned laptop at school. We envisage that the BYODprogram will allow students’ seamless use of their device athome and at school, and it reflects a global trend.

More information and expression of interest forms will beavailable in the next newsletter. If you have questions aboutthe BYOD program please email our IT Manager, Ms RozNorgaard.

SCIENCE NEWS

The Conoco-Phillips Science Experiencewas a three day hands on science activitiesprogram conducted at James CookUniversity from the 30th of September –2nd of October.

Feedback From Eva Hewitson (Year 9)

“The Conoco- PhillipsScience Experience atJames Cook Universitywas just amazing. Ilearnt many new thingsabout science like howto extract DNA from astrawberry; what the

insides of a barramundi look like; welearned all about plants, rocks and minerals of our earth; how

they are related and about how protons, electrons and neutronswork to make up the structure of an atom.

We even saw a female horse get fertilised! Some people weregrossed out, but most of us found this really cool!

This experience has helped me decide what I really want tostudy at University when I finish high school. I would highlyrecommend to any Year 9 or 10 students who have theopportunity next year to participate in the ScienceExperience….. to do it! My opinion is to take opportunities likethis, to study hard and to try your best at all times.”
