Subject: Danesborough NAG

Hello Everybody,Recently we have been discussing the future of the Danesborough NAG and after a lot of discussions it has been decided to temporally suspend the NAG due to lack of members however this may be reviewed after the impending neighbourhood changes that are due to go ahead within the next couple of months. The Community speed watch will still continue with Rob organizing deployments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has assisted me with the NAG & the community speedwatch over the previ-ous few years.

Danesborough Olympics : Danesborough Olympics : BOW BRICKHILL NEEDS YOU ……….BOW BRICKHILL NEEDS YOU ……….

The plans for the Danesborough Olympics have now been finalised – all that is needed now are volunteer participants from the villages of Woburn Sands, Wavendon, Bow Brickhill and Little Brickhill.

While the range of sporting activities is not as great as in the London Olympics there will hopefully be something to excite you; details are given below. The Danes-borough Olympics will culminate in a Hog Roast at Bow Brickhill at which the win-ning village will be presented with a Garden Seat kindly donated by Frosts Garden Centre.

Tennis Woburn Sands Tennis Club Week-end of 14/15 July(if wet 21/22 July) Round robin tournament. Two mixed pairs per village.

Golf Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands GC Monday 16 July (9.00)Stableford. Two men and two women per village. If required green fee paid by the organisers.

Cricket Campbell Park Sunday 22 July (2.00)Round robin tournament. Six-a-side

Football Walton High Tuesday 24 July (6.00)Round robin tournament. Five-a-side

Darts Bow Brickhill (Hog Roast) Saturday 28 July (from 4.30)Table Tennis Bow Brickhill (Hog Roast) Saturday 28 July (from 4.30)Individual competitions. Register in advance to enable level of interest to be as-sessed

Children’s Games Bow Brickhill (Hog Roast) Saturday 28 July (from 4.30)No need to register in advance - just turn up and play!

The winning village in each sport will be awarded 4 points, the runner-up 3 points etc. The overall winning village will be the one with the most points.

Now we need participants. If you would like to play in any of these events (other than for the Children’s Games) then please contact Mike Geddes, the Woburn Sands organiser (01908 282830 or [email protected]); if there are insuffi-cient volunteers from one village then residents from another village will be invited to play. If there are still insufficient players then individuals from outside the Danes-borough ward will be invited.

You can also register on line at www.danesborough.co.uk

Teams will be selected by the village organisers by the end of June.

Tickets for the Hog Roast will cost £5 and will be available in June from the Town Clerk. If you don’t want to eat just turn up and enjoy yourself – a bar will be avail-able!

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS APRIL 2012

Village design – exciting proposals for reducing the impact of traffic on our village!

The March meeting of the Parish Council was largely given over to a presen-tation from MK Council on options for “village design” to start making Bow Brickhill look more like a village again, and less like an attractive highway for through traffic, including HGVs.

Five sites for improvement have been identified, but detailed work has so far concentrated on Station Road at its junction with Church Road. We looked at five options for this area but it would be possible to “mix and match” those elements that we found most attractive. Once a choice is made, work could start as early as April next year.

We were very impressed with the work done so far. The next step will be for MK Council to carry out a public consultation in the village, probably over a week-end in May. As soon as we have a firm date we will advertise it in the newsletter, on the notice board and via the e-group and web site.

If you would like to consult a copy of the design document, please contact the Chair of the Parish Council – Beverley Thompson – on 01908 372192.

Bikes in the woods

We have received complaints about mountain bikes in the woods, in terms of the behaviour of riders (speed and recklessness) and damage to the envi-ronment, particularly by unauthorised creation of earth works. We have no direct control over this as a Parish Council but are trying to log the issues with those who do.

The following item appeared in the February issue of the Parish News:

Parish precept 2012-2013

Within the Council Tax for Milton Keynes, each Parish needs to set an amount that it requires for its local purposes. This is known as the Parish Precept. Last year, this was £13,000 and had not been increased for three years. This year we have reluctantly increased the precept to £14,500.

There are two main reasons for this. The first is that the Parish Council had to bring forward a deficit of nearly £1,500 into the 2011-2012 financial year and considered that this could not continue. The second is that the Pavilion is now twenty years old and requires considerable refurbishment and main-tenance.

We hope to fund this from grants wherever possible but we cannot rely on receiving these. We are also reviewing the hire rates for the Pavilion but there is a limit to how much we can increase these without hirers being un-able to bear the cost.

What is the meaning of life? Why are we here?

What’s it all about? Is this it?

An alpha course may help you to find the answers.

Alpha is an introduction to Christianity. The course gives you the opportunity to learn about the Christian faith, to ask questions and find out the facts.

A course will be starting with a welcome supper on 17th April at Stewkley and is open to all.

Rate Relief

The Parish Council has recently received the usual nil value rate invoice, due to receiving the discounted Mandatory Charity Relief @ 80% (£2,051.84) and Discretionary Relief @ 20% (£512.96).

However, the BBPC has received notification from MKC, that the Discre-tionary rate Relief is to be reviewed during the next financial year and this information provides 12 months notice that the current relief is going to end on 31st March 2013.

During the early part of the next financial year, the new policy will be devel-oped and we will be notified for consultation procedures. Once the new pol-icy has been agreed, MKC will be inviting applications for Discretionary Rate Relief. Please note this only affects the Discretionary Rate Relief and the Mandatory Rate Relief will not be changed.

After cancellation of the January and February meetings the club were back together again for their meeting on March 6th when, after lunch, our first quiz "Not just an-other day" won by Sylvia Fox was followed by quiz number two "About the House" won by Pat Parker. After all this mental exertion it was time to draw our raffle, say farewell to our friends and once again make our way home.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday April 3rd in the Pavilion at 2.00pm. Our af-ternoon tea will be followed by an illustrated talk on "The Amber Room" in The Hermitage, St Petersburg.

We look forward to seeing all our friends and enjoying a very interesting afternoon.

Bow Brickhill History SocietyBow Brickhill History Society

In March our meeting took the form of a visit to Rectory Cottages inBletchley to listen to a talk given by Paul Carter who is currentlyPrincipal Records Specialist Manager at The National Archives.

The subject was the reshaping of the system which provided relief for the poor as set out in the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. Individual par-ishes were collected into Unions which were based around a central work-house governed by a local board of guardians.

Some of the inhabitants of Bow Brickhill will remember the fear of being sent to the workhouse at Newport Pagnell held by villagers years ago. The work house became an infirmary called Renny Lodge but has now beendemolished.

From the log book of Bow Brickhill School : September,1915

Three children taken to the Workhouse today owing to their neglected and verminous condition. Case adjourned pending the arrest of the Mother, who has disappeared.

Our next meeting will be at The Wheatsheaf on Wednesday April 4th at 7.30pm

7.30 pm at the CHURCH HALLEVERYONE WELCOME – COME ALONG TO HEAR WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON IN THE VILLAGE OVER THE PAST YEAR

AND ALSO THE PRELIMINARY THINKING FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN.

Responsible Dog Owners

There has been a huge increase in the number of neat little bags of dog ex-crement to be found on the local paths, hanging from trees, fences and even styles!

There are a number of specialist bins around the village for the disposal of such waste. If you are a dog owner or see anybody leaving such parcels please, please ensure they are safely binned. They are a health hazard and a visual eyesore.

Thank you

With the help of the local community and her loyal staff, Denise and the Queen’s Head quickly gained an excellent reputation after she took it over in 2004. Within two years the pub won the title of ‘Aylesbury Vale Commu-nity Pub of the Year’ and in 2007 the ‘Best Pub in Aylesbury Vale’.

For the past five years CAMRA has included the Queens Head in the Good Beer Guide and Cask Marque has examined the beer and awarded the pub accreditation, a most stringent test.

In 2009 the pub was awarded ‘Aylesbury Vale Village Food Pub of the Year.’

The finals for the British Institute of Inn keeping Licensee of the Year Award take place in early May and we're keeping our fingers crossed hoping that the Institute will recognise Denise as this year’s queen of the trade.
