more crashes every year than speeding, drunk driving, and other major accident causes. Drivers can

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released the annual report on road accidents in
India, which shows a daily average of 1,280 road crashes and 415 deaths
Some of the findings of the report are:
1. More than 1.5 lakh people lost their lives in road crashes in the country in 2018, registering
an increase of 2.4% as compared to the 2017 (1.47 lakh fatalities)
2. Of the total people killed in road crash deaths in 2018, 48% were between 18 years and 35
years old. Minors involved in road crash deaths were at 6.6% of the total deaths.
3. Over-speeding is a major killer, accounting for 64.4% of the persons killed. This category
was followed by driving on the wrong side of the road, which accounted for 5.8% of the
accident related deaths.
4. Use of mobile phones accounted for 2.4% of the deaths and drunken driving accounted
for 2.8% of the persons killed.
5. As many as 43,614 deaths or 28.8% of total road accident deaths in the country last year
were caused due to “non-wearing of helmets”
6. Among the States, Tamil Nadu (13.7%) topped the country in terms of the total number of
road crashes, followed by Madhya Pradesh (11%) and Uttar Pradesh (9.1%).
India is the most unsafe country in the world for road users across 199 countries, as reported by the
Geneva-based World Road Federation’s World Road Statistics 2018. It’s followed by China (63,000
deaths) and the U.S. (37,000 deaths).

IRCTC signed a MOU KSTDC to improve tourism and run
golden chariot train
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited
(IRCTC), a tourism arm of Indian Railways, signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Karnataka State
Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC). The MoU
aimed to market and operate the Golden Chariot train.
The MOU is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's
vision to promote tourism in India. It will also execute PM
Modi's call to the countrymen to visit at least fifteen tourism
spots in the country.
MoU highlights:
♦ Under the MoU, the KSTDC will hand over the reins of the train to IRCTC soon.
♦ IRCTC plans to revamp the train itineraries and to add different ideas that KSTDC offers. It can
be expected that the new itineraries shall be a mix of history, culture, wildlife, and nature.
♦ IRCTC has proposed to include Bandipur, Mysore, Halebid, Chikmagalur, Hampi, Bijapur, and
Goa in the itinerary.
♦ IRCTC will carry out an internal refurbishment of the train and begins the operations from March
2020.
♦ The Golden Chariot train, which started its operations in 2008, is an initiative by the
Government of Karnataka in a joint venture with the Ministry of Railways.

Date significance:
In 1959, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on
20 November. Also, on the same day in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention
on the Rights of the Child. The year 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the
Rights of the Child.

promote the Indian literature in foreign
countries through Sahitya
Academy. To promote Indian Literature
in foreign countries, the Sahitya
Akademi that functions under the
Ministry of Culture has sent few
delegations to different countries under
the Cultural Exchange Programme of
the Ministry. The countries include
Spain, London, Brazil, Thailand, Israel,
Mauritius, Sharjah, and Nepal.

Sahitya Akademy is an autonomous organization. It functions under the Ministry of Culture. It has
translated many Indian literary masterpieces into foreign languages under the Ministry of Culture's

Government add 6 states selected to promote pulses and
oilseeds cultivation
The Government is to implement the National Food Security Mission
(NFSM)–Oilseeds and Oil Palm (OS&OP) in six more States, namely
Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, and
Andhra Pradesh. Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has been
included to bring additional area and production of pulses and oilseeds.
Aim:
The Centre aims to increase the production of oilseeds and the domestic availability of
edible oils. The also aims to expand the area under oil palm and TBOs cultivation.
Implementation:
♦ Currently, the implementation of NFSM–(OS&OP) is being done in 29 States. It has three
subcomponents, namely, Oilseeds, Oil palm, and Tree Borne Oilseeds (TBOs).
♦ The oilseeds production, which was 27.72 million tonnes in 2008-09, has been increased to
32.26 million tonnes in 2018-19. During the same period, productivity also increased from 1006 to
1265 kg/ha.
♦ The edible oil production, which was 6.34 million tonnes in 2008-09, increased to 10.44 million
tonnes in 2018-19.
♦ The government has covered an area of 3.30 lakh ha under oil palm up to 2018-19.
♦ To reduce import dependency, the government is promoting pulses and oilseeds cultivation
majorly in the six eastern states, namely Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and
West Bengal, since 2016-17.
