Hilltopper Sports is on the Air! The West Liberty University television station, WLUTV-14, brings all the action of every West Liberty women’s basketball game to Hilltopper fans everywhere as part of the West Liberty Sports Network (WLSN).

Executive Director Theresa Gretchen and Senior Producer Jared Thompson lead a talented crew of West Liberty University broadcasting students who consistently deliver professional-quality telecasts. Todd Ullom serves as the “Voice of the Hilltoppers.”

The West Liberty Sports Network provides live coverage of virtually all Hilltopper football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball games throughout the year to more than 100,000 Xfinity cable subscribers in northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio on the WLUTV-14 cable channel.

Several WLUTV-produced telecasts of Hilltopper sporting events have been shown on local NBC affiliate WTOV-TV9 in Steubenville, Ohio and beamed to more than 2 million cable homes on ROOT Sports-Pittsburgh (now AT&T SportsNet). WLUTV-14 has also produced numerous live local telecasts for the Wheeling Nailers professional hockey team, the ECHL affiliate of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

THIS IS WEST LIBERTY! West Liberty University (WLU), a public coeducational school and West Virginia’s oldest institution of higher education, is situated on 290 hilltop acres in a rural setting just an hour from Pittsburgh. A satellite campus located at The Highlands Shopping Complex sits adjacent to Interstate 70, minutes from the Pennsylvania and Ohio borders in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Established in 1837, more than 2,500 students are enrolled.

Elementary education and secondary education are the most selected majors but WLU provides a wide spectrum of more than 70 academic majors in its five Colleges: the Gary E. West College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Arts and Communication, the College of Education, and the College of Sciences. West Liberty also offers numerous graduate programs in a variety of disciplines along with degree completion programs for nontraditional students. Students both commute and live in residence halls on campus.

Among the more recent additions to the campus infrastructure is the Campbell Hall of Health Sciences. The 72,000 square-foot multi-story building united the university’s science and health care majors – Dental Hygiene, Physician Assistant Studies, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Speech Pathology/Audiology, and Chemistry – under one roof.

There has always been a strong athletic tradition at West Liberty. The Hilltoppers’ men’s basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the nation at some point in each of the last eight seasons and has made five NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances, including a run to the 2014 national championship game. The WLU football program made history in 2009 and 2010 as the only NCAA Division II team ever to lead the nation in scoring and total offense in consecutive seasons.

Grammy Award-winning country music singer-songwriter Brad Paisley is one of West Liberty’s many distinguished alumni. The University website is www.westliberty.edu, Twitter feed is wlumedia and Facebook account is www.facebook.com/westliberty.

WLU SOFTBALL COMPLEX The WLU Softball Complex has been hailed as one of the premier NCAA Division II softball facilities in the region ever since its debut in the spring of 2010.

Located adjacent to West Family Stadium, the softball complex is completely enclosed with fans afforded a great view of the action from the elevated bleachers.

Other features include modern dugouts, a pro-style backstop, large electronic scoreboard, full-size dual batting cages and an independent irrigation system.

KOVALICK FIELD Honoring the memory of WLU Hall of Famer George Kovalick, Kovalick Field is home to one of the region’s most tradition-laden baseball programs.

Situated in a natural amphitheater with raised bleacher seating, the stadium features a natural grass playing surface with a large electronic scoreboard located behind the fence in right-center field.

Modern dugouts complete with safety railings and a new press box are recent additions, making Kovalick Field one of the MEC’s top baseball venues.

H. EDGAR MARTIN TENNIS COMPLEX Honoring the memory of legendary West Liberty coach and athletic director H. Edgar Martin, the Martin Tennis Complex has been recognized as one of the region’s premier college tennis facilities for years.

The modern complex features eight regulation courts, all with a competition surface engineered to USTA standards.

The Martin Tennis Complex is home to the Hilltoppers’ regionally-ranked men’s and women’s tennis teams and is also open for recreational play to students, faculty, staff and the public.

BELMONT SAVINGS BANK INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY

Fueled by a generous lead gift from Belmont Savings Bank, ground was broken in August for a 14,400-square foot indoor practice facility adjacent to the WLU Softball Complex near Beta Hall. The vinyl-covered steel frame building is being manufactured and installed by ClearSpan, a leading fabric structure corporation headquartered in Connecticut.

Measuring 120 x 120 feet, the heated and insulated facility will be completely covered by an artificial turf playing surface and will provide an upgraded practice experience for all WLU athletic teams throughout the year.

The addition of the indoor practice facility benefits all students on campus as it allows the baseball and softball teams to remove their batting cages and equipment from the Blatnik Hall gym, freeing that facility up completely for intramural competition.

The entire project was expected to be completed and the building fully operational by the end of October.

The 145,000-square foot Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex has been praised as one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II multi-purpose athletic facilities since it opened its doors during the 2000-01 school year.

The 1,200-seat arena is the home of West Liberty’s men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling and acrobatics & tumbling teams and has been selected to host multiple NCAA Division II regional championship events for wrestling and men’s basketball.

With three Mondo surface basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track, a well-equipped fitness center, a conference center, full athletic training facilities, administrative offices and numerous classrooms, the facility is a hub of campus activity throughout the year.

WEST FAMILY STADIUM Renamed in 2014 to honor the generosity of WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, a series of recent upgrades have turned West Liberty's football home into an NCAA Division II showcase.

Recent additions include the installation of new grandstand seating and expanded press box which provides full radio/TV broadcast capability along with wireless internet service for all working media.

Other recent improvements included an impressive new lighting system along with enhanced landscaping and design elements, all of which combine to make the 4,000-seat facility one of the top NCAA Division II stadiums in the region.

The player-friendly MondoTurf playing surface, which hosted two NCAA Division II playoff games in 2009, is surrounded by a cushioned walking and jogging track used by students, faculty, staff and community members throughout the year.

WEST FAMILY ATHLETIC COMPLEXFueled by a generous gift from WLU alumni Gary and Flip West, the newest addition to West Liberty's impressive athletic facilities lineup is nearing completion on the Hilltopper campus.

The West Family Athletic Complex will be the state-of-the-art home for WLU’s men's and women's soccer, track and cross-country squads.

Featuring a player-friendly artificial turf soccer field with a full 8-lane all-weather track built to NCAA specifications, Phase One of the project is expected to be completed in time for competition during the 2018-19 academic year.

The second phase of construction will add lights along with upgraded parking and access roads with the third and final phase providing a brand-new field house.

Dr. Stephen Greiner was selected as president of West Liberty University by the WLU Board of Governors on Oct. 29, 2015 and officially assumed the responsibilities of his office on Jan. 4, 2016. He succeeded Dr. John P. McCullough, who had been serving as interim president of the university.

A talented and experienced administrator, Greiner has been serving as a college president for nearly two decades and has spent more than four decades on college campuses as a university faculty member and administrator.

He came to West Liberty after a successful five-year stint as president and CEO of Hazard Community and Technical College, a comprehensive multiple-campus public degree granting institution serving approximately 4,000 students in seven counties in eastern Kentucky.

From 2005-10, Greiner served as president of Brunswick Community College, which operates a trio of branch campuses in southeastern North Carolina. He was the president of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. from 2001-05.

Greiner is an Ohio Valley native. Born and raised in Weirton, W.Va., he graduated from Weir High School in 1964. He went on to earn a bachelor’s

degree in Education from the University of Kentucky and holds a master’s degree in Public Service from Western Kentucky University. Greiner earned his doctorate in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

Dr. Greiner and his wife, Nancy, reside on campus at historic Colonial Heights, the traditional home of West Liberty’s presidents. They have two grown children, twins John and Jacquelyn.

Lynn Ullom was introduced as WLU’s new athletic director by President Dr. Stephen Greiner on May 4, 2017. The winningest women’s basketball coach in West Virginia history and a member of the West Liberty Hall of Fame, Ullom has spent more than three decades on the university campus as a student, coach and administrator.

Averaging more than 20 wins a season throughout his 26-year coaching career, Ullom turned the Lady Hilltopper program into a perennial Atlantic Region power.

His WLU women posted 17 20-win seasons, won five regular-season conference titles, six conference tournament crowns, played in 14 conference tournament championship games and earned 14 NCAA tournament bids. His 534-252 (.679) career record still ranks among the best all-time in the NCAA Division II ranks.

The 3-time Conference Coach of the Year was the first women’s sports coach to earn the prestigious West Virginia College Coach of the Year Award from the West Virginia Sportswriters Association. He was also named the 2011 WBCA Region 2 Coach of the Year and was a 2016 WBCA Victory Award Club recipient.

Ullom’s teams and players set numerous school records and won multiple NCAA athletic and academic honors. No less than 52 Lady Hilltoppers earned first- or second-team All-Conference selections during the Ullom Era and every player who finished her career at West Liberty walked away with her degree. Six of his former assistant coaches have gone on to become head coaches at the collegiate level.

A native of Cameron, W.Va., Ullom has two children, Jared and Tessa. Lynn and his wife, Karen, reside in Wheeling. Karen has two daughters, Micah and Alycia.

West Liberty University women’s basketball coach Kyle Cooper is excited about the prospects for his Lady Hilltopper program as he heads into his second season at the helm.

There’s good reason for optimism as Cooper returns all but one starter – including record-setting All-America senior center Marissa Brown – and numerous letterwinners from a 2017-18 squad that came on strong down the stretch to claim a fourth-place finish in the 12-team Mountain East Conference chase.

With the addition of two high-scoring transfers and several elite freshman recruits, the West Liberty women figure to be a top contender in the MEC this season.

“We saw how special this team could be at times a year ago,” Cooper said. “Our focus now is on developing the mentality that leads to a consistency of effort and execution not just from game to game but from possession to possession.”

Much of the focus during Cooper’s debut season was on creating a culture and environment within the program that was conducive to long-term success.

“In order to play the up-tempo, motion-based basketball that we believe in as a staff, we knew we had to have players who cared more about each other than themselves,” Cooper said. “We wanted to be a family, not just a basketball team, and we saw that more and more over the course of the season. We couldn’t wait to get started again, blending our new faces with the old to grow up quickly together as a cohesive family unit.”

The heart and soul of the Lady Hilltopper program are the four seniors. Brown, coming off one of the most dominant seasons in school history, is joined by 5-8 guard Brandi Beader, 5-9 guard Johnie Olkosky and 6-1 post Allie Farina.

The 6-3 Brown exploded onto the national scene a year ago, leading the nation with 299 field goals and earning WBCA and D2CCA All-America honors as the only NCAA Division II woman to rank among the Top 10 nationally in scoring (24.0 ppg.) and rebounding (11.2 rpg.).

Beader has been a double-figure scorer each of the past two seasons. She averaged 12.8 ppg. a year ago and shoots nearly 40 percent from the 3-point arc with 138 career 3-pointers.

Olkosky has started every game since arriving on the WLU campus and checks off a lot of boxes. A deadly shooter approaching 200 3-pointers for her career, Olkosky also averaged nearly 7 rebounds a game last year.

A three-year letterwinner, Farina brings a physical presence to the court and is a quality experienced depth option behind Brown in the post.

“We are blessed with some great senior leadership,” Cooper said. “Marissa asserted herself as one of the premier players in the nation. Her conditioning and the way she runs the floor complement her skills inside. She’s a special, special player.“Johnie is a coach on the floor. She does a lot of things that don’t show up in box scores but definitely pay off in wins. Brandi is a versatile scoring guard who can be an incredible weapon while a large part of Marissa’s success is due to what Allie brings to the table in practice every day. She is a great teammate.”

Also back for the Hilltoppers are a pair of two-year junior letterwinners in 5-7 guard Grace Fodor and 5-11 forward Monica Bragg.

Fodor has played in every game over her first two seasons as a speedy back-up point guard while Bragg is looking to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2017-18 season after being a key contributor as a true freshman.

“We think Grace could make major strides as she continues to channel her natural athleticism,” Cooper said. “We just want to get Monica back to being Monica from a health standpoint because she gives us another high-level athlete with great length and abilities.”

Cooper also returns five sophomores in 5-6 point guard Audrey Tingle, 5-8 guard Olivia Belknap, 5-9 guard Jaclyn Kitts, 5-10 guard/forward Samantha Hall and 5-6 guard Micah Findley.

Tingle made an immediate impact last year, leading all NCAA Division II freshman and ranking among the top five nationally with 6.5 assists per game despite missing the last three games with a season-ending injury.

Belknap and Kitts were significant contributors off the bench, playing in every game. Hall also played well in reserve while Findley returns after a redshirt season.

“I thought Audrey’s numbers were a little overshadowed by Marissa’s incredible season,” Cooper said, “but she’s definitely on track to be an elite point guard at a program known for producing elite point guards.“Olivia showed flashes of what she’s capable of becoming so we hope it continues to click for her and Jackie is getting more comfortable after a long layoff. Sammie has embraced her role and Micah is working back into the flow after missing last year.”

Cooper is thrilled with the quality additions to his growing family, headed by a pair of talented transfer guards in 5-9 Taylor Johnson and 5-9 Morgan Brunner.

Johnson redshirted at West Liberty last year after transferring from NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey (N.C.) where the Ohio native scored nearly 500 points as a two-year starter.

Brunner, a former Linsly School standout from Wheeling, played in 54 games with several starts in two years at NCAA Division I Youngstown State. She was a Horizon League Freshman of the Week selection in January of her rookie season.

“From what we saw of Taylor in practice last season, she has the makings of a premier scorer in our system,” Cooper said. “Morgan gives us another big physical guard who can shoot the basketball from deep but also has the ability to get to the rim.”

Cooper is no less enthusiastic about his incoming freshmen.

Kelsi Hulit is a 5-11 forward who was an All-Ohio basketball and track standout at Malvern High School. She is joined in the paint by 6-1 Lindsay Humbel, a record-setting post from Parma (Ohio) High School, and Tasia Staunton, a versatile and athletic 5-11 forward from Zanesville (Ohio) High School. Destiny Hutcheson is a 5-7 first-team All-Ohio guard from Philo (Ohio) High School who averaged 30+ ppg. in post-season play and scored nearly 1,500 career points.

“We were so impressed by the talent and character of these young women throughout the recruiting process,” Cooper said. “It’s a big jump from high school to college but I would not be surprised to see them make an immediate impact.”

Assistant coach Cassie Seth and part-time assistant Robbie Bonar return to the Lady Hilltopper bench.

“I feel very fortunate to have Coach Seth alongside me as we continue to lead this program back to where it belongs,” Cooper said. “Having Cassie and Robbie on the bench balances who I am and makes this program feel like family.”

HEAD COACH: KYLE COOPER Kyle Cooper heads into his second year at the helm of West Liberty University’s women’s basketball program looking to build on the momentum from the Lady Hilltoppers’ second-semester surge.

Early-season injuries and a challenging non-conference schedule left the West Liberty women with just four wins in their first 13 games a year ago but Cooper’s patience was rewarded as the Lady Hilltoppers caught fire in conference play.

West Liberty won eight of its next 10 games to thrust itself into the thick of the conference chase and when the dust had settled, Cooper’s first team had earned the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

The Hilltoppers ranked among the Top 20 nationally as a team in scoring, assists and 3-point field goals while junior All-American Marissa Brown was the only NCAA Division II woman in the nation to rank among the Top 10 nationally in scoring (4th, 24.0 ppg.) and rebounding (9th, 11.2 rpg.).

In addition, Audrey Tingle led all NCAA Division II freshmen in assists and ranked No. 5 nationally at 6.5 apg. before missing the last few games due to injury.

Cooper is no stranger to success. He had spent four years as the lead assistant for the WLU women, filling the role of associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for legendary head coach Lynn Ullom. Cooper took the reins when Ullom stepped down to accept the role of full-time athletic director. West Liberty went 82-45 (.646) during Cooper’s four years as an assistant with three 20-win seasons.

Back-to-back Mountain East Conference championships in 2015 and 2016 highlighted that run. The 2016 squad set a school record by going 29-5 and spent the entire season ranked in the USA Today coaches’ Top 25. That Lady Hilltopper team finished the season ranked No. 18 nationally after a “Sweet 16” run that included a regional semifinal win against defending national champion California (Pa.).

Cooper caught the coaching bug during his days as a student at West Virginia University. He served as assistant head manager and basketball camp counselor for Coach John Beilein’s Elite 8 and Sweet 16 NCAA Tournament men’s basketball teams during Cooper’s first two years at WVU (2005-06).

The Waterford, Pa. native spent the next four seasons (2007-10) as head student manager and graduate assistant for Coach Mike Carey with the Mountaineers’ women’s basketball program. The WVU women advanced to post-season play all four years, earning three trips to the NCAA Tournament and a WNIT berth.

Cooper left Morgantown in 2010 to serve as Director of Women’s Basketball Operations for head coach Semeka Randall at Ohio University. He spent one season with the Lady Bobcats before accepting an assistant coaching position at Wheeling Jesuit and came to West Liberty after two years at WJU.

An outstanding student, Cooper graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia in 2008 with dual bachelor’s degrees in Sport Management and Athletic Coaching Education along with a minor in Business Administration. He earned a master’s degree from WVU in Educational Leadership with a focus on Higher Education in 2010.

Kyle and his wife, Katie, are a West Liberty family as Katie is the university's Director of Financial Aid. They live in Wellsburg, W.Va. with their children, Brody and Cali.

Cassie Seth returns for her second season as the lead assistant with the Lady Hilltopper women's basketball program.

Seth joined Coach Kyle Cooper’s West Liberty staff a year ago after a successful season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Baldwin-Wallace University. Working for Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Cheri Harrer, Seth helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a sparkling 21-5 season and a runner-up finish in the highly-competitive Ohio Athletic Conference.

Before breaking into the collegiate ranks at Baldwin-Wallace, Seth spent seven years as a high school head coach in the Cleveland area. During her two seasons at Medina Highland, Seth guided the Hornets to their first-ever OHSAA Division I tournament win before moving on to Parma High School. She was the first coach in more than two decades to post double-digit wins in consecutive seasons at Parma.

During her time as a high school coach, Seth developed 32 all-conference players, five all-district selections and one conference player of the year. She was chosen to coach in the 2010 Medina County All-Star Game and the 2016 Greater Cleveland Basketball Coaches Association (GCBCA) All-Star Game.

The Waterford, Pa. native was a four-year standout and 1,000-point scorer during her playing days at Mercyhurst (Pa.) University. A three-year captain and All-GLIAC honoree, she finished her career ranked among the Lakers’ Top 10 all-time in points and steals. Just as successful in the classroom, Seth was a two-time Dean's List student and earned a spot on the GLIAC’s All-Academic Team.

She holds a bachelor's degree in Business with a concentration in Sport Business Management from Mercyhurst along with a master's degree in Sports Administration from Valparaiso (Ind.) University. Seth is also certified as an International Strength Training Association (ITSA) personal trainer and dotFIT fitness professional.

Robbie Bonar is back for his fifth season as a part-time assistant coach with the Lady Hilltoppers.

Bonar’s primary areas of responsibility at West Liberty include on-court instruction, strategy and skills development during practice and games.

In addition to his coaching duties at WLU, Bonar also served as assistant boys’ basketball coach at John Marshall High School in Glen Dale, W.Va. during the 2013-14 season.

A 2007 John Marshall graduate, Bonar went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sport Psychology from West Virginia University in 2011. He continued his studies at Miami (Ohio) University, earning a master’s in Sport Studies from Miami in 2013.

Robbie and his wife, Sarah, reside in Glen Dale, W.Va., with their son, Marshall.

Chris Bucon is beginning his first season as Development Coordinator with the WLU women's basketball program.

A native of Wheeling, W.Va., Bucon's primary areas of responsibility will include community service and outreach, fundraising and networking.

Bucon is a 2008 graduate of Wheeling Central Catholic High School. He graduated from West Virginia University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Hospitality and a Communications minor. He has worked as an insurance producer for Paree Insurance for the past six years.

An All-Conference soccer standout in high school, Bucon already has several years of girls' basketball coaching experience at the AAU and high school levels. He most recently served as an assistant coach on Wheeling Central's 2017-18 West Virginia state championship squad.

The son of Jim and Lisa Bucon, Chris is the brother of former WLU women's basketball standout Emily Bucon.

Kori Hulit returns for her fourth season as a student manager with the Lady Hilltoppers’ women's basketball program.

Kori is a senior Dental Hygiene major from Malvern, Ohio who was a multi-sport athlete at Malvern High School.

Kori is the daughter of Michael and Tami Hulit and the sister of WLU freshman basketball player Kelsi Hulit.

CONFERENCE HISTORY A charter member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when it formed in 1924, West Liberty was also part of the WVIAC’s women’s basketball program since its inception in 1981-82. The Hilltoppers won three WVIAC women’s basketball titles and claimed five WVIAC women’s tournament championships.

When the league dissolved following the 2012-13 season, West Liberty joined 11 other schools in forming the Mountain East Conference, which began operation as the NCAA's newest Division II all-sports league in the summer of 2013. Reid Amos was appointed as the MEC's first commissioner and the conference offices are centrally located in Bridgeport, W.Va.

The 12 charter members of the MEC include nine West Virginia institutions – Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Shepherd University, The University of Charleston, West Liberty University, W.Va. State University, Wheeling Jesuit University, and W.Va. Wesleyan College – along with Notre Dame College and Urbana University from Ohio and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

In addition to women’s basketball, the MEC crowns conference champions in 16 other sports: football, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, softball, volleyball and women’s lacrosse.
