“The Music of the Civil War”

Winter Weather Meeting Policy

SteveBall is a musician from Columbus, Ohio, specializing in the music of the American Civil War as well as the life and music of Stephen Foster. He has been studying the American Civil War since his teens and has devoted the past twenty years to studying the music of this era in American history. Steve has performed at the Ohio

Statehouse, the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the American Civil War Museum of Ohio in Tif in, and countless historical societies, genealogical societies, libraries, museums, Civil War Round Tables, and other historical venues, including re-enactments and living history programs. He has released two CDs of music from the Civil War period and is currently working on a CD of Stephen Foster tunes. Steve has been an instructor for Life Long Learning through Central Ohio Technical College. He also provides the music for the annual Civil War Symposium in Spring ield, Ohio, and is the narrator for the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Civil War Brass Band. He is a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a member of the Civil War Preservation Trust. Steve has participated in the annual Civil War Heritage Music Gathering in Wyndham, New York, and the Gettysburg Music Muster at the Gettysburg National Military Park visitor center. Tonight’s presentation includes tunes dating from the mid-1850s that would become representative of the climate of the country before the war began in 1861. As the presentation unfolds, you will hear patriotic songs cherished by both sides, a sing-along, and inally tunes that re lected the loss and melancholy the war would produce. The history and in luence of each tune is shared, as well as the progress of the war itself.

“Southern Pride” raffle held

The Round Table’s fall auction, themed “Southern Pride,” was held at the November meeting. Thanks to your generosity, we raised $105 for the Mahon-ing Valley CWRT which will help us continue to bring in quality programming and presenters. Spe-cial thanks go out to Round Table members MikeMiller and DonHardin for selling the tickets and wrangling the prints over the past several meetings.

The Mahoning Valley Civil War Round Table has awarded it’s 2019 Hugh G. Earnhart Civil War Scholarship Award to Thomas J. Ryan and Richard R. Schaus for their groundbreak-ing work on the retreat from Gettysburg, “LeeisTrappedandMustbeTaken”—ElevenFatefulDaysafterGettysburg,July4-14,1863. In this new study on the re-treat from Gettysburg, the co-authors bring their years of ex-perience in the military and in-telligence ields into their re-search and writing. Following the events of the Confederate retreat and Union pursuit from Gettysburg through the lens of military intelligence, the narra-tive chronicles each army’s movements, day-by-day, and the intelligence used by each army’s commander to make

those movements. Readers will appreciate the thorough research of sources relating to the Bureau of Military Infor-mation, the Provost Marshal General, and many other pre-viously unpublished accounts found within. Also, as readers of Civil War titles published by Savas Beatie have come to ex-pect, excellent maps by cartog-rapher Hal Jespersen aptly support Ryan and Schaus’ work. Deep research, penetrat-ing analysis and conclusions, and written in an easy-to-read manner, “LeeisTrappedandMustbeTaken” will remain a de initive voice in the ield. Named after one of the round table’s founding mem-bers, the award is presented to recipients for their outstanding contributions in the ield of Civ-il War historiography. This is

only the second time this award has been presented. Founded in 1982 by Profes-sor Hugh G. Earnhart, the Ma-honing Valley Civil War Round Table has grown into a nation-ally recognized round table.

goes toward maintenance, re-freshing the images or text with new research, cleaning, etc. The MVCWRT will sponsor this sign below depicting the ac-tion around Suttonville (then Western Virginia) during Decem-

ber 1861, where the 7th Ohio Vol-unteer Infantry, formed in north-eastern Ohio, par-ticipated. The 7th OVI fought in the Shenandoah Val-ley, at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chat-tanooga and At-lanta.
