Kyogle Public School Newsletter Term 1 ends : Friday, 13 April, 2018 Term 2 begins : Monday, April 30 2018 Next P & C Meeting Tuesday, 20 February 5.30pm Staffroom DATE: Monday, 19 February 2018 TERM 1 WEEK 4 NO. 3 Principal: Drew Green Principal’s Message Part of our reward system is a weekly “Yarning Circle” in every classroom. There are 2 stars on offer; 1 for Classroom behaviour and 1 for Playground behaviour. An element of these behaviours is actually being at school. If your child has an unexplained absence they are ineligible for their stars. However as long as you’ve explained their absence via a note, phone call or the SkoolBag App, then they will still be eligible for their stars depending on their weeks behaviour. So you play a role in their stars too! Included in this newsletter is the outline of rewards that are achieved through gaining weekly stars and also, our Behaviour levels and what happens as students move through these if at all. The vast majority of students’ never get any of these levels. Maybe have a conversation with your children to see what understanding they have of these levels and rewards. Please find the following Rewards System and Behaviour Levels on the SkoolBag App under “Permission notes/Notes to parents” if you would like to print them out. Drew

Academic Expo Fun!! Towards the end of term 4 last year, KPS hosted its first ever Academic Expo. The expo proved to be very successful and the feedback from parents, students and the wider community was exceptional. The expo started with students nominating to participate in any or all of the following categories; Writing, Public Speaking, Visual Art, Reading Australian Verse and Instrumental. Due to overwhelming demand, sub-categories of dance and vocal were added partway through the program. Students prepared their presentations which were judged within school time by specialist judges sourced from the local area. A winner and highly commended were selected from each category by the judges. The Academic Expo evening was held on December 4 where medallions were presented to those who were chosen as winners or highly commended entries. Commendation certificates were also awarded to other entries, including those who nominated for dance or vocal categories. Many students performed their entries for a crowd that included the Kyogle Mayor, Kyogle Council General Manager, and the President of the Kyogle Lions Club who were the principal sponsors for the evening, as well as more than 90 parents and spectators. This year we hope to expand the main categories to include dance and vocal, with a view towards further expanding the program to include other categories such as STEM or mathematics in the future. I congratulate all those students who entered, pushing themselves to do something different which was for most, well outside of their comfort zone. It was Elenor Roosevelt who said, ‘You must do what you think you cannot do’ and I was beyond proud to see so many of our students putting this into practice. As a direct result of members of the Kyogle Community seeing what our students are capable of, Holly Reid was asked to perform her poem, ‘triantiwontigongolope’ by CJ Dennis at the 2018 Australia Day Ceremony. Holly’s presentation, just like at the Academic Expo, was fantastic and was the source of much praise by those who saw it. Well done Holly, and well done to all those who entered the Academic Expo. I would appreciate any feedback you may have on the program as we begin to plan the second academic expo for Term 4 of 2018. Natalie Hoffman
