Work continues, trying to define all of the requirements
for the data center virtualization and infrastructure
upgrade, with staff from Paula Ross’ team (Network
Infrastructure and Communications) and strategic
partners working on the project. Frankie Jackson
participated in a design meeting on May 31, 2016,
hoping to nail down the bill of materials so the order for
equipment can be processed. Though very close, the
teams are reviewing every line item for accuracy.

Arranging Rack Space for Future Equipment
Virtualization and Infrastructure Upgrade (Bond Goals 4.1 & 4.2)
Frankie Jackson toured Data Center 4 with Greg Rhodes and Lance Melancon on Tuesday, May 31, 2016. The
team is down to defining the technical details of arranging rack space and the placement of network electronics in
our colocation facility cage. Shown in the following pictures, on the right are three cabinets that will be dedicated
to virtualized server space and data storage. Layer3’s Paul Maney and Joel McCotter are shown in the middle,
checking the specifications and sizes of the network electronics. Greg Rhodes, on the right, points to the cabinet
where the new monitoring system, eLERT, will be installed. Progress is underway and our team is anxious to start. .

Layer3 Provides Wireless Training for Ray Leung,
ECN’s New Wireless Network Engineer
June 1, 2016
After the Enterprise Communications and Network (ECN) team meeting with Layer3 and Aruba on
Wednesday, June 1, 2016, Frankie Jackson snapped the below picture showing Henry Deleon (Layer3)
training our new wireless network engineer, Ray Leung. Now that Ray has been on the job for about a month,
he’s ready to step in and start supporting the wireless components of the network. Henry was willing to help
our team by showing Ray various components of the internal wireless network, including monitoring tools.

LANDesk Replacement for Novell Zenworks is
Underway at the Elementary Schools
Josh Zhang and Larry Barrios at Hancock Elementary
Upgrading from ZENWorks to LANDesk
Larry Barrios’ Device Imaging and Integration (DII)
team is working feverishly to replace Novell
ZenWorks with the LANDesk desktop
management enterprise software.
Larry is working to prepare a comprehensive
schedule that includes scheduled dates for all
tasks, including package (image) building, and
updates for the remaining elementary schools,
secondary schools, and service centers.
On Thursday, June 2, 2016, Frankie visited Josh
Zhang and Larry at Hancock elementary school to
observe how the conversion is going. The
transition to LANDesk must be complete by July
31, 2016. We are not budgeted in the 2016-2017
for ZenWorks annual support. Additionally, we
have notified Novell that we would not be
renewing our annual contract.

Danish Elementary Summer Technology Conference –
Featuring the New Hovercam for Blended Learning
June 3, 2016
Frankie Jackson participated in Danish Elementary school’s summer
technology conference on Friday morning, June 3, 2016. She specifically
attended Margaret Grice’s training on how to use the HoverCam, the new
document cameras purchased from 2014 Bond Instructional Technology
funds. Every classroom in the district is receiving one.
Be sure and checkout this short video to see how the HoverCam can be
used to support blended learning in a classroom environment.

High Speed Wireless Cabling Projects Continue
Through the Summer
The high speed wireless cabling projects continue through
the summer. Teams are making major headway at the
campuses. The following table shows overall average
percent completions. Teams are excited to announce that
98% of the original cabling work scheduled for the
campuses is complete. Other cabling work that was
identified as additional work needed is at 88% complete.
This is great news. Without the high speed cabling installed,
dense deployment wireless cannot be completed.

Technology Infrastructure work is

Participation in the Houston Urban Area Security
Initiative: Cybersecurity Mini-Assessment Workshop
June 3, 2016
Frankie Jackson participated in the Houston Urban Area
Security Initiative (UASI): Cybersecurity Mini-
Assessment Workshop on Friday, June 3, 2016. Dava
Morris also attended, along with many other K-12 local
area school districts. Klein ISD hosted the event. The
workshop included going through a mini-assessment to
give participants an awareness of the type of controls
that need to be in place.
The workshop was informative. Plans are underway to
talk to the UASI about conducting a full assessment in
the future.

A huge highlight for me was participating in the
Danish elementary technology conference on
Friday. We’ve communicated to campuses over
the past two years that we had to upgrade the
infrastructure first, before we could deliver instructional
technology. The conference was a reminder of how close
we are and what the impact will be. Teachers are starting to
receive new Promethean boards, hovercams, audio
systems, and devices. What a great way to end the school
year, seeing teachers being trained on new technology
tools! I was thrilled and am so proud!. – Frankie Jackson
