Existing hedgerow retained and enhanced to strengthen the site’s hedgerow network. Trim trail features provided through the site rather than a formal play area provision. This could also include outdoor gym equipment to encourage exercise and physical activity when using the site’s circular walking routes. SuDS features will be designed to provide both amenity and biodiversity value to these areas, creating a linked network of habitats which will allow for species movement as well as providing an attractive aesthetic element to be enjoyed by residents. Ash tree retained as a key landscape feature – framed in views along Vinegar Hill. New tree planting will aim to retain this tree’s identity as a natural landmark, and will avoid crowding. Section of Vinegar Hill to be subject to a ‘Prohibition of Driving Order’ to prohibit motor vehicles and provide a more sustainable transport friendly connection between Undy and Grange Road/the northern extent of the M4. This will in turn strengthen the north to south green corridor and providing opportunity for active travel. Front of plot planting to include species of benefit to pollinators. New planting along the northern-most extent of the site provides buffering from M4 and visual screening longevity should vegetation associated with the M4 be removed. Hedgerow maintenance strips provided – not accessible to the public. Street tree planting included, outside of private ownership, and in places integrated into rain garden features. Provide ‘stepping stones’ for ecology through the development. Native tree species of local provenance are to be specified within public open space areas, however non-native species will also be integrated as feature trees to aid climate resilience. Sustainable drainage features integrated within streetscapes and green corridors to store and slow the movement of surface water across the site at peak flow, as well as providing an element of water cleansing. The proposal provides additional ‘off-road’ public footpaths through proposed open spaces, including new pedestrian connection to the adjacent Rockfield Farm Development, enhancing the area’s footpath network. Provision of Community Orchard areas across the site (MCC’s preference over allotments) provides the opportunity for community food production and participation, as well as providing both habitat and pollination benefits. Development blocks are designed to be outward facing to overlook areas of POS to ensure security of spaces and provide a sensitive transition between development and green space – an improvement to the currently ‘raw’ settlement edge.
