presence of the electronics that

constantly surround us for granted.

Many of current electronic systems

contain of displays to provide the user

with a simple visual interface, based

very often on low cost, liquid crystal

display technology with features that

would have been unheard of a few

years ago.The latest display products

use advanced semiconductor and

packaging technologies to provide

compact display solutions, offering

both monochrome and colour display

options, while consuming minute

amounts of power, ideal for battery

powered or mobile applications.

In 1996 the worldwide LCDC market

covered 1106 Mio US$ which was an

increase of 67% compared to ´95

figures.This tremendous worldwide

business growth underlines the trend

of incorporating LCD´s in today´s

electronic applications.According to

detailed figures from DATAQUEST,

Hitachi is no 1 of all LCDC suppliers

having a market share of approx. 20%.

Hitachi offers a wide range of LCD

drivers/controllers, from 7-segment

devices aimed at simple displays, such

as digital clocks, through character

controllers/drivers, which contain all

the circuitry required to drive and

control an alphanumeric display, all the

way to row and column drivers,

suitable for driving the latest colour

STN flat panel displays. Furthermore,

Hitachi delivers intelligence on board.

Means, 4-bit and 8-bit micro-

controllers with LCD Driving

capability such as H400 and H8/300L

series.

Semiconductor technology moves

rapidly, and this is no less true in the

area of LCD drivers/controllers, the

latest devices now integrate many of

the features on-chip, that used to

require extra external circuitry.These

features in conjunction with the latest

in packaging technology, allow the

design of displays that take up less

space and consume less power than

ever before, and at a lower system cost.

Many of our newest devices are

aimed at low power applications, such

as Mobile Telephones or PDA

(Personal Digital Assistant) / PCA

(Personal Communications Assistant)

applications, and so offer a wide range

of advanced, low power features, such

as digital contrast control, static icon

drive and on-chip voltage doubler /

tripler / quadrupler, as well as low

voltage operation down to 1.8V.

Hitachi is also using the latest advances

in packaging technology.Tape Carrier

Packages (TCP) allows the maximum

number of pins to be used in a small

package for large graphics displays,

while Chip On Glass (COG)

technology offers the lowest cost

solution for dot matrix displays and

middle size graphic displays, such as

Hitachi has a wide range of display

drivers to support medium and high

resolution graphics displays.These

displays are used in many applications,

including high-end feature phones,

such as web phones, electronic games

and diagnostic equipment. Hitachi’s

row and column drivers provide

solutions to a wide range of display

applications, for standard

monochrome, four-level grey scale,

four-level reflective colour and full

colour applications.

Hitachi also offers LCD

Controllers/Drivers for Wide

Temperature Range (WTR).The

standard temperature range is -20°C

to 75°C and is not indicated in the

part name. WTR (I-spec.) means -

40°C to 85°C for Controllers and -

30°C to 85°C for Driver products.

Hitachi recommends to use I-spec. for

critical applications, particularly in

industrial and automotive applications.

displays Hitachi is also able to offer

QFP and TQFP package options as

well as Chip On Board (COB)

technology.

The table below shows the different

product groups sorted by their

characteristic features.

Following the trend to reduce the

current consumption further, Hitachi

has incorporated two new driving

methods in the graphic type driver

product group. HI-FAS stands for

High-Frequency-Amplitude-Selection

and allows the high-pin-count column

devices to drive the Display with

Vlcd=5V only, whereas the low-pin-

count common drivers cover

Vlcd=70V.This combination of

different voltage levels for common

and column signals results in a

significant reduction of power

consumption. MLA reflects Multi-

Line-Addressing and is similar to HI-

FAS technique, but more suitable for

single-chip graphic controllers. In both

cases, designers should consider a

different LCD supply voltage circuit to

support these new driving methods.

The following pages illustrate the

respective products and on-chip

features.

C o m m o n D r i v e r sCommon drivers can be easily

combined with respective column

drivers in order to fulfil requirements

of complex graphic displays. For

example, the technical solution to

build up a small graphic LCM with

128x64 dots resolution in 3V and

QFP technology consists of only

three devices.

There is one HD61203U driving 64

common outputs, incorporating on-

chip timing circuit and data interface

to the microcontroller.Two additional

column drivers HD61202U with 64

column outputs each and respective

display RAM on-chip are necessary to

configure the overall display system.

C o l u m n D r i v e r sAs already anticipated, column drivers

are able to drive small, medium and

large graphic-type LCD panels when

combined with common drivers.

Usually, small and medium displays

require multiplex ratios (Duty Rates)

starting from Static drive up to 1/64

Duty cycles whereas large displays can

be multiplexed from 1/64 up to 1/480

Duty cycles.

Column drivers can also be used to

extend the display driving capability of

Dot Matrix Character Display. Other

features are display RAM for direct

output of display data, Grey scale and

HI-FAS

are now able to benefit from the high

levels of integration already available

to users of LCD Character

Controllers/Drivers. Hitachi have

introduced a number of highly

integrated solutions to various

graphics display sizes aimed specifically

at applications such as pagers, mobile

phone handsets and PCA/PDA’s, but

these devices are also suitable for a

multitude of other application areas

due to their low power consumption

and high levels of integration.

Hitachi is able to offer many

integrated solutions to these displays.

The HD66108, HD66410, HD66420,

and HD66421 offer a completely

integrated single chip solution to small

graphics displays, integrating many of

the external components normally

required for driving a graphics display

onto one device, allowing the

production of the most cost effective

display module.

The Hitachi HD66410T provides a

low power, single chip solution for

driving small, bit mapped graphics

displays.A single HD66410T can

display a maximum of 128 x 33 dots,

enough for 4 lines of 20 characters

using 5 x 8 dot characters.

The HD66410T also supports up to

72 annunciators output with a 1/3

duty cycle that are available even

during standby modes, making it

particularly suitable for time and other

mark indications.

The HD66410T is particular suitable

for low power systems, such as pagers,

where power consumption is critical,

with an operating voltage range of

2.2 - 5.5 V and with standby modes,

with and without the separate

annunciator drive.

bit mapped graphics display with

minimal external components.This

makes the HD66420T ideal for

applications such as pagers and mobile

phones.The HD66420 contains

160x80x2 bits of RAM to hold the

display information of e.g. 10

characters by 5 lines with 16x16 dots

resolution. In addition, 4-level grey

scaling or 2 banks data updating can

be selected in order to improve the

functionality in graphics systems.The

device supports a maximum of

160 column outputs, and a maximum

of 80 common outputs.

Also by using two HD66420T’s the

display can be further expanded up to

320x80 or 160x160.The HD66420T

comes in a range of compact TCP

package options as well as COG

versions.

M i x e d M o d eIn our fast moving world, flexibility

and fast ‘Turn Around Time’ are

essential requirements for designs like

GSM/DECT Mobile phones, ISDN

terminals, organisers, etc…

The ´IDEAL´ device should cover

features of many different end-

products, allowing the customer to

change the end-product by doing

minor changes in software and

hardware. Ideally, this results in short

development periods and reduced cost

of the final product. That is why

Hitachi has developed the HD6672x

series.

This new generation of LCD

controllers is able to drive Dot Matrix

Character displays and Graphic type

displays.

These display configurations are

software selectable and allow these

LCDC products to be integrated in

new generations of telecommuni-

cation, consumer and automotive

applications.The HD66724/725 /726

incorporates the “OR” function to

drive Graphic/Dot Matrix Character

Displays.

The 66728 does have the new Super

Impose Function (SIF) in order to

drive Graphic “AND” Dot Matrix

Character on one display at the same

time.The graphics resolutions are

72x26 for 66724, 96x26 for 66725,

96x42 for 66726 and 112x80 for

66728.

Other functions like SCI, Booster,

Scroll and KPS are obvious.

In order to cover the Far-East market,

Hitachi will introduce the HD66732

which supports with its 1Mb

Character ROM different character

sets.Also here, SIF is on-chip to

control graphic displays as well. For

more details refer also to page 8.

Many applications, such as mobile

phones, RDS radios, satellite receivers

and meters, require the ability to

display simple alpha-numeric

information to the user.To support

these applications, Hitachi have a

range of Dot Matrix display

controllers/drivers.These devices are

designed to provide all of the control

and drive circuitry required to drive

an LCD display in one chip.

Such products can be interfaced to the

host micro-processor using a number

of different methods.These options

include parallel 4/8-bit bus, a simple

synchronous serial interface, or an I2C

interface. (exact interface method

depends on the device used).These

character controllers / drivers also

contain an area of mask ROM,

containing the character set supported

by each device. Customers can use the

standard character sets supplied by

Hitachi, these character sets contain a

range of standard alpha-numeric

characters. Most devices also allow the

user to create their own custom

character sets in the mask ROM, using

Hitachi Software, but there would be a

minimum order quantity and NRE

associated with this.

Most of our character controllers

/drivers are based on the HD44780

type device, many of these devices

offering a superset of the features

found on the 44780.These include

features such as the ability to blink

characters automatically, the ability to

turn the cursor on and off, double

height characters and the ability to

scroll the display in various directions.

Hitachi’s character controllers/ drivers

are designed to minimise the external

circuitry needed to implement LCD

drive capability. Many of these devices

come with on-board DC-DC

converters, designed to multiply the

supply voltage to provide the LCD

drive voltage. Icon drive is also present

on many of the devices, to provide the

ability to drive icons on a custom

display, separately from the alpha-

numeric characters.

Following the requirements of power

controller /Graphic controller that

displays Japanese characters consisting

of Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana

according to the Japanese Kanji set,

level 1 and level 2. It contains an on-

board ROM with a 6,353 Kanji

character fonts and 285 non Kanji

characters. Furthermore, it supports a

display size of 4 lines by 10 characters

(11x12 dots) or a graphic display of

112x52 dots.The HD66732 can drive

240 icons and is interfaced to a host

microcontroller via an 8-bit bus or

synchronous serial interface. In

addition, it incorporates Key Pad Scan

and the Super-Impose function for

Graphic/Dot Matrix Character

displays.The HD66732 operates with

a supply voltage of 2.2-5.5V and is

available in TCP and COG packages.

sensitive applications, such as mobile

phone handsets, Hitachi’s character

drivers have a multitude of low power

modes (LPM), with some devices

operating with voltages as low as 2.4V

(with on-board DC-DC converter for

LCD drive voltage generation ).These

devices have very low power

consumption figures, with the best

devices providing active displays while

taking less than 10µA. Other features

such as static icons drive, and standby

modes further decrease the power

consumption during operation. Figures

for the HD66717 are shown in the

following table.

Sometimes the display capability of

the standard LCD characters drivers is

not sufficient for an application.

Hitachi offers extension drivers that

are designed to increase the number of

alpha-numeric characters that can be

displayed from one display controller

driver. Many of the standard LCD

controllers/drivers contain extra RAM

and the necessary control signals to

drive one or more of these extension

drivers.

The HD66002 and HD66100, the

latest expansion drivers to be added to

our product line, can be used with a

number of our LCD drivers, including

the HD44780U, HD66710, HD66712

& HD66720 For instance, the

HD44780U, can display 2 lines of 8

characters, so if used with two

HD66002’s it can control and display

2 lines of 40 characters, i.e. when used

with HD44780U, each HD66002 can

display 2 lines of 16 characters. Refer

to page 4 in order to get more

information about HD66002 and

HD66100.

In the past, Liquid Crystal Modules

(LCM) were produced by using

LCDC in QFP and TQFP (1.2mm

high) packages. Following the market

trend to increase the pin-count and to

shrink the package size,Tape Carrier

packages (TCP) have been developed.

TCP is the generic name for packages

fabricated by TAB technology (TAP

Automatic Bonding), using a tape

wired with copper-foil patterns.This

designation has been adopted by the

EIAJ Semiconductor External

Standards Committee. Compared to

conventional packages the structure

and the materials of TCP provide the

following features:

1. Light weight

2. Thin

3. Fine pitch capability

4. Flexible design

Fine pitch leads mean a reduced pad

pitch on the device, enabling more

functionality to be put into the same

package size. Combined with thickness

less than 1.0mm (typically 0.65mm),

this feature translated into thinner

LCD modules with higher definition,

or into compact, high performance

system. Flexible design includes the

possibility of customisation of pattern

layout and TCP design. Currently,

Hitachi offers tape-carrier-packaged

LCD versions in the area of

Column/Common Graphic and Dot

Matrix Character product areas.

These LCD drivers combine a device

that withstands high voltages and gives

high definition and a tape carrier

package which promises excellent

reliability, making possible applications

that would not be feasible with a

conventional QFP.With the chip-

specialised LCM manufactures, Hitachi

developed Chip-On-Board (COB)

and Chip-On-Glass (COG)

technology as well.

The Chip-On-Board version consists

of the base chip with AL pads

whereas the COG version reflects the

chip with Au bumps which allow

direct assembly on the LCD glass.

Looking at the line-ups on the

previous pages, it can be seen that

Hitachi focuses on this type of

products.
