  • Network RequirementsYoucanconnectmanynetworkprinterstoonePC.Themaximumnumberofprintersdependsonthecapacityofthenetworktodeliverdatatotheprinter.Toinstallaprinteronanetwork,thefollowingcomponentsarerequired: AnEthernetnetworkthatusestheTCP/IPprotocolandcanrunat100

    megabitspersecond,alsocalled100baseT.Printersalsosupport10baseT. AnEthernetcabletoconnecttheprintertothenetwork.AnEthernetcableis

    notsuppliedwiththeprinter. APCthatmeetsthePCRequirementsdescribedonpage1,andis

    connectedtoandcommunicatingwiththenetwork.

    USB RequirementsYoucanconnectuptoeightcardprinterstoaPCusingUSBcables.ToinstallaprinterusingaUSBconnection,thefollowingcomponentsarerequired: AhighspeedUSBport.USB2.0isrequired. AUSBcabletoconnecttheprintertothePC.AUSBcableissuppliedwiththe

    printer. APCthatmeetsthePCRequirementsdescribedonpage1.IfyouneedtoconnecttwocardprinterstoaPCwithoneUSBport,useasingle,independentlypoweredUSBhubtowhichyoucanconnectbothprinters.2 Installation

  • Site RequirementsSetupandusetheprinterinanenvironmentthatmeetsthefollowingrequirements. Providespacefortheprinter

    andforclearancearoundtheprinter.Theprinterdimensionsandclearanceareaareshowninthefollowingtable.

    Placetheprinterinanenvironmentwithtemperaturesrangingfrom60to95F(15to35C).

    Useasinglephase,3wire,groundedreceptacle. Placethesystemanditssuppliesinacleanofficeenvironment,keepingpaper

    andforeignmaterialsofftheequipment. Placetheprinteronasturdy,levelsurface.

    Secure Printing RequirementsSecureprintingconsistsofencryptingprintcommandsandcarddataandtransmittingtheinformationsecurelyfromthePCtotheprinter.Touseencryption,yourprintermustsupportsecureprinting.Printersthatsupportsecureprintingareshippedwithsecureprintingenabled.RefertoBehavioronpage42formoreinformationonusingthePrinterManagerwebservicetospecifyprintersecuritysettings.WhenyouusetheXPSCardPrinterDriver,thedriverusesthemostsecureprintingprotocolenabledintheprinter.Formoreinformation,refertoyourcardprintersDriverGuide.Ifyourcardproductionsiterequiressecureprinting,usethefollowing: DatacardSD260L,SD360,orCD800cardprinterswithsecureprintingenabled

    Topreparetheprintertoprintcards,removeanypackingmaterial,loadblankcardstockintotheinputhopper(optional),loadprintribbon,andloadacleaningsleeveontotheprintcartridge.

    Remove Packing Material from the Printer

    1. Unlocktheprinterandopentheprintersuppliesaccessdoor.

    2. Removethepackingmaterialinsertedbehindthemulticardhopper.

    3. Closetheprintersuppliesaccessdoor.

    Single Hopper

    Ifyouareusingamanualfeedprinter,skipthisstepandkeepasupplyofblankcardsclosetotheprinter.Forprinterswithaninputhopper,dothefollowing:1. Opentheinputhopper.2. Loadthecardsintotheinput

    hopper.(Fanthecardsbeforeplacingtheminthehopperoptional.)

    Insertmagneticstripecardswiththestripedownandtowardtherightsideoftheinputhopper.

    Insertsmartcardswiththesmartcardchipontoptowardthebackofthehopper.

  • Optional Multi-Card Hopper

    1. Unlocktheprinterandopenthemulticardhopper.

    2. Loadthecardsintothehoppers.TheinputhoppersarelabeledH1throughH6.Youcanloadupto100cardsintoeachhopper.(Fanthecardsbeforeplacingtheminthehoppersoptional.) Insertmagneticstripe

    cardswiththestripedownandtowardtherightsideoftheinputhopper.

    Insertsmartcardswiththesmartcardchipontoptowardthebackofthehopper.

    Loadtheribbonwhenyouinstalltheprinterandwhentheribbonrunsout.1. Unlocktheprinterandopentheprintersuppliesaccessdoorontheoptional

    multicardhopper.2. Opentheprintercover.

    3. Removetheprintribboncartridge.4. Loadafullrollofprintribbonontothe

    spindleclosesttothecartridgehandle.5. Placetheemptyspoolonthespindle

    withtheblackgear.6. Windtheemptyspoolcounterclockwise

  • Load the Cleaning Sleeve

    Loadanewcleaningsleevewitheachnewrollofprintribbon.Theprintershipswiththecleaningrollerspindleinstalledontheprintribboncartridge.1. Removethecleaningrollerspindlefrom

    theribboncartridgeandslidethespindleintothecontinuouscleaningsleeve(a).

    2. Placethespindlewithcleaningsleeveontotheribboncartridge(b).

    3. Removetheprotectivewrapperfromthecleaningsleeve(c).

    Install the Ribbon Cartridge

    Installtheassembledprintribboncartridgeintotheprinter.1. Opentheprintercover.2. Holdtheprintribboncartridgebythehandleandloweritintotheprinter

    withthehandletowardthefrontoftheprinter.

    3. Makesurethattheribboncartridgeiscorrectlypositionedintheguides.4. Closetheprintercover(andthesuppliesaccessdoorontheoptionalmulti

    Youcaninstalladditionalequipmentontheprinterdependingonyourrequirements.

    Install a Large Output Hopper

    Theoutputhopperincludedwiththeprinterholdsabout25cards.Theprinteralsocanbeusedwithanoptionallargeoutputhopperthatholdsupto100cards.Thelargeoutputhopperkitincludestwobasesectionsandthelargeoutputhopper.Thetwobasesectionsarethesame;turnthembacktobacktousethem.Eachbasehashooks(markedbygreencircles)toattachittotheprinterbase.

    Youcanremovethestandardhopperandattachthelargeoutputhopperwithoutusingtools.

    Base Sections

    Large Output Hopper10 Installation

  • Dothefollowingtoattachtheprintertothebases,andtoinstallthelargeroutputhopper.1. Positiononebasesectionwiththeopenendfacingthebackoftheprinter.2. Lifttheprinteroverthebasesection.3. Alignthetabsinthebasewiththeslotsinthebottomoftheprinter.4. Pushuptoinsertthefourtabsintheslots,andthenpushthebaseforwardto

    lockittotheprinter.5. Positiontheotherbasesectionwiththeopeningfacingthefrontofthe

    printer.

    6. Pushuptoinsertthefourtabsintheslotsandthenpushthebasebacktolockittotheprinter.

    7. Removethe25cardoutputhopperfromtheprinter.Slideitout,similartoadrawer.

    8. Slidethe100cardoutputhopperintotheassembledbaseandprinter.Makesurethatthetabs(shownincirclesintheillustration)securethehoppertotheprinter.

    HINTS&TIPS Thebasesectionscontaindrawers,usefulforholdingcards,cleaningswabs,

    orotherfrequentlyuseditems.Thedrawerscanbeopenedfromeithertheleftorrightsideoftheprinter.

    Thestandardinputhoppercanholdabout100cards.Someprinterscanbeupgradedtousea200cardinputhopper.The200cardinputhopperkitincludesthelargerhopperwithanattachedcover.Thestandardhopperiseasilyremovedandthe200cardhoppercanbeinstalledwithoutusingtools.1. Opentheinputhopper.2. Pressthereleasetab

    locatedonthebackwallofthehopperwhileliftingthehopperupandofftheprinter.

    3. Installthe200cardinputhopperbyaligningthetabswiththeslotsontheprinter.

    4. Pushthehopperdownuntilitclicksintoplace.

    5. Loadupto200cardsinthehopperandclosethehoppercover.Theprinterisreadytoprintcards.

  • Install the Optional Cable Lock

    Thecablelockisauserinstalledfeaturethatdoesnotrequirespecialtoolstoinstall.ThepackagecontainsaKensingtonlockwithkeys,instructions,andametalsecurityplate.ThesecurityplateisinstalledintheprinterandisdesignedtoaccommodatetheTbaroftheKensingtonlock.1. Preparetheprinterbyinstallingthemetalsecurityplate:

    A. Tiptheprinteronitsrightside.B. Locatethesecurityplate

    receptacleontheundersideoftheprintertowardthebackleftside.

    C. Insertthesecurityplateintothereceptaclewiththeopenendtowardtheprinter.

    2. Followtheinstructionsincludedwiththelocktocompletetheinstallation.

    Use the Card Printer DriverTheCardPrinterDriverusesMicrosoftXPSprinttechnologytosupportprintingfromcurrentlyavailableapplications.Italsosupportsapplicationsdevelopedusingsupportedoperatingsystems.IfyouplantousetheCardPrinterDriver,refertoyourprintersDriverGuideforcompleteinformation.

    Use OpenCard Data Format

    TheOpenCardDataFormatoptioncanbeenabledatthefactoryorthroughafieldupgradeonanSD/CDseriescardprinter.FormoreinformationaboutsettinguptheOpenCardoption,refertotheSDandCDSeriesCardPrintersOpenCardDataFormatGuide.

  • Printing DesignColor Printing

    Colorprintribbonisavailableinfullpanelandshortpanelstyles.Full-Panel Ribbon

    Fullpanelcolorprintingusesaprintribbonwiththreecolorpanels:Y(yellow),M (magenta),andC(cyan).TheribbonalsoincludesaK(black)panelandaT(topcoat)panel.TheprinterappliestheYMCcolorpanelstothecardfirst,printsblackcomponentsusingtheKpanel,andthenappliestheT(topcoat)toprotectthecolorimagefromdamage.

    Short-Panel Ribbon

    Colorprintribbonalsoisavailableinashortpaneloption.Thecolorareaforshortpanelribbonis1.57inches(40mm).Theymcpanelsofshortpanelribbonareapproximatelyhalfthelengthofafullcard.(Inthisguide,ymcinlowercase,insteadofYMC,referstoshortpanelcolorpanels.)Whenyouprintwithshortpanelprintribbon,youdefinethelocationofthecolorareainthecarddesign.Colorprintingbeginswhenthesoftwaredetectsacolorpixelandcontinuesforthelengthoftheymcpanels.

    Split-Ribbon Color Printing

    Splitribboncolorprintingletsyouusefewerribbonstoprintcardsincolor.ItisavailableonlywiththeCardPrinterDriver.RefertoyourprintersDriverGuideforinformationonhowtospecifysplitribboncolorprinting.Splitribboncolorprintingusesasingleribbonpanelsetfromafullcolorribbontoprintbothsidesofacard,ratherthantwoorthreepanelsets.Theribboncanbeafullpanelorshortpanelcolorribbon.Theorderinwhichthecolor,black,andtopcoatsectionsofthepanelsetareusedtoprintthecarddependsonthetypeofribboninstalledintheprinterandthesplitribbonoptionselectedonthedriverPrintingPreferenceswindow.

    Mosttypesofcards,includingcardswithmagneticstripesandsmartcards,canbeprintedusingsplitribbonprinting.Optionsforcolor,monochrome,andtopcoatingareavailablewhenyouusesplitribbonprinting.16 Elements of Card Design

  • Manage Color

    ColormanagementistheprocessofmakingcoloronthePCmonitorandprintedcardappearassimilaraspossible.Forcolormanagement,thecardprinterusesthesRGBcolorstandard(standardRed,Green,andBluecolorspace).

    Print Text in Color

    Theprintercanprinttextinanycolor.Smallcharactersarelikelytobemorereadableiftheyareformattedasblackandprintedwiththeblack(K)panel.Theprintersupports6pointorlargertextwithasansseriffont.

    Print Graphics in Color

    Theprinterproducesfullcolorimagesfrommosttypesofgraphics.ItcanuseBMP,JPEG,TIFF,andPNGfileformatsforphotosandlogos.Vectorgraphics,suchasWMFandSVGfiles,havecomponentssuchasshapeswithlinesandfills.ComponentsdefinedasblackinthefilenormallyprintwiththeKpanel.Becausetheprinterusestheprintribbonpanelsinsequence(YMCfirst,thenK),blackimagescanprintovercolorgraphics.Forthebestappearanceofcolorgraphics,ortopreventbackgroundsthatareblackfromprintingovercoloredimages,useacolorthatappearsblackbutisnot,sothatallpartsofanimageprintwiththeYMCpanels.Forexample,intheRGBcolorspace,0, 0,0isblack(andprintswiththeKpanel),but0,0,5isnotblack(andprintswiththeYMCpanels).

    Types of Color Images

    Cardscanincludebothcolorphotosandacolorlogoortext.Thelogoisusuallythesameoneachcard,andthephotoisunique.Followtheseguidelinestoobtainthebestresultsforprintingbothlogoandphotos. First,checkthecolorqualityofthephotos:

    Adjusttheimagecapturesystemtogetthebestqualityphotos;workwithdistance,lighting,andcamerasettingstoobtainconsistent,highqualityphotos.

  • Next,evaluatetheothercolorareasofthecard,suchastextorlogo: Checkyourcardproductionapplicationforsettingsthatcanhelpimprove
