Chapter 1. Introduction

IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager, Version 4.2, uses a relational databasemanagement system (RDBMS) server with the Inventory and Software Distributioncomponents to store data. The configuration repository is a database in the RDBMSthat contains the schema (tables and columns) in which information is stored in aconsistent structure.

You can view or run queries on the data in the configuration repository. Forexample, you can query the configuration repository for all systems that have anoutdated version of a software product that will need upgrading in the next year.

This book lists and describes each view and table included in the configurationrepository schema. This book also lists and describes the queries that you caninstall when you install IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager, Version 4.2.

In addition, this book describes history tracking and lists the historical views, queries, and tables.

Note: Information provided in this book regarding the table and view definitionsof the configuration repository can also be extracted from the systemcatalogs of your RDBMS. For more information, consult your RDBMSmanuals or your database administrator.

For a graphical representation of the tables in the configuration repository, see theDatabase Schema poster enclosed with this documentation, or contact your Tivolicustomer support representative for a copy. You can also create your own tablesand views.

For more information on using the configuration repository, see the followingsections in the User’s Guide for Inventory:v To add tables to the configuration repository, see the chapter on collecting

custom information.v To create queries, see the chapter on querying inventory information.v To delete information from the configuration repository, see the commands

appendix.

Chapter 2. History Tracking

IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager provides an optional history tracking feature tostore inventory data and change information from all previous inventory andpervasive device scans. Data from the current scan is stored in operational datatables. Operational data tables are overwritten or updated during each scan, depending on whether the Update with Differences or Replace with CurrentResults option is selected for the inventory profile. Operational data tables reflectonly the most current scan. However, if you enable history tracking, new, modified, and deleted data from the operational data tables are stored in historytables as the operational data tables is overwritten.

You can access historical data by using history views, queries, and tables. Historyviews, queries, and tables are designated with an uppercase H and an underscorecharacter (H_) at the beginning of their names. Following the H_, the name of ahistory view, query, or table generally has the same name as the operational view, query, or table with which it is associated.

Each operational data table that contains the column COMPUTER_SYS_ID has acorresponding history table. A history table has all of the column names from thecorresponding operational data table plus the following additional columns:

RECORD_ACTIONThe RECORD_ACTION column tells whether the record is an INSERT(new information is being added to the operational data table), anUPDATE (part of a record in the operational data table is being modified),or a DELETE (the record no longer exists in the operational data table).

PRFL_ACTIONPRFL_ACTION states whether the profile configuration option is Replacewith Current Results (REPLACE) or Update With Differences(REPLACE_WITH_DIFF). Also, while the column RECORD_TIME inoperational data tables contains the time that the record was inserted intothe database, RECORD_TIME in history tables contains the time that theendpoint was scanned (the COMPUTER_SCANTIME column from theCOMPUTER table).

To enable history tracking, you must create history tables in the configurationrepository. See the Planning and Installation for more information about creatingthese tables.

Note: Data is never deleted from the history tables. Even if you remove a systemfrom the Tivoli management region (Tivoli region) using the winvrmnodecommand, the record of the system’s existence remains in the history tablesunless you either manually delete the history tables or add the tables namesto the INVENTORY_TABLES table and use the winvrmnode command. See“Deleting History Tables” on page 6 and the commands appendix in theUser’s Guide for Inventory for more information.

Using History Tables for the First TimeWhen you enable history tracking for the first time, a series of history tables isinstalled in the configuration repository. After the history tables are installed, youshould populate the history tables with information from a full scan.

Page 16: Database Schema Reference

If you install the historical schema at the same time as the operational dataschema, use the Update with Differences profile option for all scans. If you installthe historical schema after the operational data schema, use the Replace withCurrent Results profile option for the first scan, then use Update with Differencesfor all successive scans. This ensures that only the change data is sent to thehistory tables. If you use Replace with Current Results for each scan, the size ofthe history tables will grow by the size of the full scan for each scan, and it will bemore difficult to query the actual changes to the Tivoli region.

The following scenario illustrates the difference between the two options. In thisscenario, the operational data table MATCHED_SWARE is used to store data about100 installed software applications that are found using signature matching at anendpoint. On the initial scan, the MATCHED_SWARE table returns 100 entries forthe scanned system, so the H_MATCHED_SWARE table also has 100 entries.

Before the next scan, five software applications are added to and five are deletedfrom the system. If you use the Update with Differences option on the next scan,H_MATCHED_SWARE only adds 10 entries, five as INSERT entries for the fivenew software applications and five as DELETE entries for the five applications thatwere removed. The H_MATCH_SWARE table now has 110 total entries, and theadditional entries show which software applications were added and which weredeleted.

However, if you use the Replace with Current Results option, theH_MATCHED_SWARE table adds 100 entries. Combined with the original 100entries, the Replace with Current Results option leaves you with 200 total entriesafter the second scan, all of which are stored as INSERT entries. This option adds90 more entries than the Update with Differences option does, and none of thenew entries explicitly show that some software applications were deleted.

Modifying History Tracking for EfficiencyWithout customization, history tracking can consume an enormous amount ofdatabase space and resources. The following recommendations describes ways tocustomize history tracking to use history tracking while minimizing the databasespace and resources used:v Delete any history tables for which you do not want to gather data.

By default, the h_<database>_schema.sql scripts create a table to correspond toevery inventory table in the inv_<database>_schema.sql script that contains theattribute COMPUTER_SYS_ID. If there are tables for which you will never wantto keep history tables, you can remove the corresponding CREATE TABLE fromthe h_<db>_schema.sql script. If the h_<db>_schema.sql script has already beenrun, drop the tables at the database using the DROP TABLE <table name>statement. For example, you may not want to collect historical information from theH_UNMATCHED_FILES table. Information from a basic file scan is stored in theUNMATCHED_FILES table, and when history tracking is on, the data is thenstored in the H_UNMATCHED_FILES table. Basic file information is the largestset of data that inventory collects. Depending on which include directories andfile types are selected in the profile, basic file information can be 95 percent ormore of the total scan data for an endpoint. In addition, the ACCESSED_TIME and MODIFIED_TIME attributes can changefrequently, which will cause an update record to be sent to the

4 IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager: Database Schema Reference

Page 17: Database Schema Reference

H_UNMATCHED_FILES table every time a file is accessed or modified. Deletingthe H_UNMATCHED_FILES table can significantly reduce the amount of datastored in history tables.Pervasive device tables are also likely to change very frequently. Dependingupon the requirements of your environment, you should consider whether tocollect historical information for pervasive devices.

v Use the same software profile configuration for each scan of an endpoint. It is recommended that you use the update with differences option for profileswhen history tracking is enabled because software and hardware scans workdifferently. With hardware scans, the update with differences option recognizeswhen hardware has been deselected from the profile configuration. For example,if a hardware component is found in one scan and the next scan runs with thatcomponent deselected from the profile, Inventory recognizes that the componenthas not been deleted. With software scanning, however, if a directory is scanned during one scan andthen deselected during the next scan, all software information returned in thefirst scan shows up as deleted in the second scan. To prevent these erroneousdeletes from being sent to the history tables, you should scan endpoints withprofiles having include and exclude directories and the same file types selected. If you need to scan the same endpoints for different software configurationsover multiple scans, you can remove the corresponding history tables asdescribed earlier in this section.

v Add unique constraints to history tables to limit which change data is saved.History tables are created without primary keys or constraints. Before data issent to the history tables, the constraints already have been met in theoperational data tables. Inventory only sends inserts, never updates or deletes, tothe history tables. The lack of constraints provides quicker data insertion. Anychange for any column in a history table causes a record to be written. If youwant a history record to be written only if certain columns change, you can adda unique constraint. For example, the H_COMPUTER_SYS_MEM table has the COMPUTER_SYS_ID,PHYSICAL_TOTAL_KB, PHYSICAL_FREE_KB, TOTAL_PAGES, FREE_PAGES,PAGE_SIZE, VIRT_FREE_KB, RECORD_ACTION, PRFL_ACTION,RECORD_TIME columns. PHYSICAL_FREE_KB, FREE_PAGES,VIRT_TOTAL_KB, VIRT_FREE_KB, and RECORD_TIME will probably changeevery scan. To insert change data for all the columns except these five, you canadd a constraint to the H_COMPUTER_SYS_MEM table. All attributes in aunique constraint must be non-null, which means the table needs to berecreated. If the table already has data in it that should be preserved, you needto copy the data to a temporary table first, and then back to the recreatedH_COMPUTER_SYS_MEM table. The following example show how to do this inDB2®:-- This view selects only the oldest records with theunique attributes we want to save.create view H_TMP_MEM_VIEWasselect *from

H_COMPUTER_SYS_MEM Hwhere

H.RECORD_TIME = (select MIN(RECORD_TIME)from H_COMPUTER_SYS_MEM

Custom History TablesInventory automatically populates custom history tables when the tables areproperly added to the configuration repository. See the chapter on collectingcustom information in the User’s Guide for Inventory for information about creatingcustom history tables.

Deleting History TablesYou can manually delete history tables by using the following method, or you canuse the winvrmnode command. For more information on deleting history tablesusing winvrmnode, see the commands appendix in the User’s Guide for Inventory.

6 IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager: Database Schema Reference

Page 19: Database Schema Reference

You can manually delete history tables either by time or by specific computer ID.The following examples show how to delete history tables for DB2.

To delete history tables for a specific system, enter the following command:delete from H_TABLE_NAME where COMPUTER_SYS_ID = ’SYSTEM_ID’;

where:

H_TABLE_NAMESpecifies the name of the history table.

SYSTEM_IDSpecifies the computer system ID.

All history tables with the name specified by H_TABLE_NAME for the system withthis computer system ID will be deleted when this command is run.To delete otherhistory tables for the system with this computer system ID, you must run thiscommand for each table name you want to delete.

To delete history tables before a specific time, enter the following command:delete from H_TABLE_NAME where RECORD_TIME < ’YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS’

where:

H_TABLE_NAMESpecifies the name of the history table.

YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SSSpecifies the date and time before which you want to delete history tables. This format is for DB2; other platforms may require different formats.

All history tables with the name specified by H_TABLE_NAME and created beforethis date will be deleted when this command is run.

Chapter 3. Configuration Repository Views

The following sections describe the pre-defined views provided with IBM TivoliConfiguration Manager. These views were created when IBM Tivoli ConfigurationManager was installed. Each section describes the columns in each view and showsthe platforms on which the data is collected. A check mark (U) indicates thecolumn might be populated when a view is run on that platform.

Note: A check mark does not indicate that a column will be populated every time, only that it is possible for data to be collected on that platform. A columnmay still remain unpopulated in some circumstances.

If no check mark is provided, the column never contains data for that platform.Exceptions are indicated with other symbols and explained in each table asnecessary.

Note: IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager uses the same naming conventions for alldatabases. All table and column names are 18 characters or less in length.
