EDITORIAL
Dear IDSA members, dear readers,
a lot has happened since the summit in March.
We have specified our orientation and adjusted
our measures accordingly. Delivery of the first
prototype components of a secure, manufac-
turer-independent platform for secure data ex-
change is imminent. At the IoT Solutions World
Congress in Barcelona (16 – 18 October 2018),
we will present the first Minimum Viable Pro-
duct (MVP 1). MVP 2 will follow a few months
later. Very exciting.
By winning some EU projects, we have also
been able to expand the base of companies
and research institutions that support us in
further developing the IDS standard. This
gives us more input, more speed and reach,
and more attention – in Europe and beyond.
As we continue to gather momentum, I would
like to remind you that the energy of our
initiative largely comes from you, i.e. our mem-
bers: Your requirements, your participation in
working groups and task forces, your use cases
and implementations, your testimonials and,
last but not least, the way you advertise our
association provide the fuel we need for our
progress.
At the latest with the coming of the first usable
IDS components you can begin to develop your
own solutions in your company and to push
forward your digital transformation. Our asso-
ciation provides you with platforms, events and
tools that facilitate the exchange of experience
with like-minded people and thereby accelerate
your own developments.
DR. REINHOLD
ACHATZ,
CHAIRMAN OF THE
BOARD, THYS SEN-
KRUPP AG, IDSA© ThyssenKrupp
Benefit, challenge and encourage us.
It is above all your ideas, concepts and testi-
monials at congresses, conventions and trade
fairs that draw other companies’ attention to
the IDS and not only promote membership but
also active participation. The aim is to reach the
decision-maker level! Contact us if you are inte-
rested and let us know when you present the
IDSA at lectures.
By deploying IDS connectors and ecosystem
components you can support your associated
companies, business partners, suppliers, cus-
tomers and service providers in the develop-
ment and implementation of data-based, di-
gital business models and make them more
secure.
Which arguments and recommendations are of
more consequence and persuasive than those
from the users themselves? With the „Mem-
bers get members“ programme, we provide
you with a simple tool. Read more about it in
this edition.
With the Regional IDSA Hub Concept and the
recently established SME Alliance (Please find
more information on page 31) we are pro-
viding new, additional approaches for your
participation and therefore for the successful
further development of the International Data
Spaces Association.
“The success of the IDS is in the hands of its
members and users!”
With this in mind, enjoy reading this issue.
Yours,
Reinhold Achatz

BRIEF, CONCISE, INFORMATIVE: NEW ADVERTISING MEDIUM GETS TO THE HEART OF IDS CONTENTINFOGRAPHIC PRESENTS IDS AT A GLANCE
What is IDS? What are its goals? What is the
technical implementation like? How is valid
certification guaranteed? And what role does
the International Data Spaces Association play?
There are many questions about IDS as the
topic is very complex and multifaceted. The
most important answers are now summarised
in a new, clearly structured infographic. The IDS
concept can be communicated and explained
briefly, concisely and informatively in this way.
Around 150 copies of the infographic, which
can also be downloaded here, will be sent in a
poster format to the 93 member companies. “It
is the member companies who are often con-
fronted with questions about IDS and who ex-
plain our goals in many discussions at congres-
ses and trade fairs with business partners and
customers and present IDS and the Internatio-
nal Data Spaces Association,” says Lars Nagel,
NEWS
Managing Director of IDSA. The infographic is
intended to support this. Looking at the pos-
ter, it quickly becomes clear which mission
statement IDSA is pursuing, what exactly lies
behind use cases and communities and how
brokers, identity providers and connectors in-
teract within the trustworthy data architecture
for the data economy. “The infographic can be
showcased in the companies themselves but
also at large events to help answer the funda-
mental questions about IDS comprehensively
and quickly”, Nagel invites all member compa-
nies to use the infographic as an information
tool and advertising medium.
A call to action is not missing either: interested
parties are forwarded to the IDSA homepage
by QR code, can apply for membership and
even help design the International Data Spaces.

CALL TO ACTION
DIGITAL IDENTITIES
A network of trusted entities in the data economy requires a mechanism for digital entities, that can reliably identify a partic-ipant and can provide more infor-mation on transaction partners. Additional information must be updated regularly and be provid-ed in a trusted manner.
Services and functionalities of the IDS are spec-ified and validated in use cases.
The IDS approach is applied and tested in Pilots.
Additional requirements are fed into the architecture development.
Smart Services are devel-oped facilitating the Data Owner and Data Consum-ers to exploit the IDS.
Interest and user groups of same or similar domains with common challenges validate and proliferate the IDS ap-proach, technology and eco-system. Based on their prac-tical experience the IDS reference architecture and the eco-system around it are continuously developed. Thus, specific application scenarios for verticals are set up, im-plemented and systematically pushed forward, allowing participants to enhance existing or to launch new services.

Data ProviderData Providers give access to data under specific usage and price models. They are able to control the access to data and the usage of data at the Data Consumer.
Data ConsumerData Consumers can search for data and use the data of different data pro-viders. Data Consumers are bound to the usage policy of the Data Provider.
Data exchange or Software injectionConnector IDS Connectors provide standardized connectivity in the IDS Ecosystem. Con-nectors are responsible for connectiv-ity and Usage Control. They allow the execution of trusted apps in an isolat-ed Identity Provider environment.
Identity Provider Identity Providers offer a range of services to create, maintain, manage and validate identity information of and for IDS partici-pants, regardless under which of the above roles they consider to take part. Proven identity of all participants in the IDS rep-resent an essential imperative to the IDS architecture.
VocabularyVocabulary Providers manage and offer vocabularies (ontologies, reference data models, metadata elements) which can be used to annotate and describe datasets. Vocabulary Providers provide (domain spe-cific) vocabularies and their reference to the IDS Information Model, which is the basis for the description of data sources.
Clearing HouseIntermediary providing clearing and set-tlement services for all financial and data exchange transactions within the IDS.
BrokerIDS Connectors register the description of their data end-points at an IDS Broker. Thus, potential Data Consumers can look up available data sources and data in terms of their content, structure quality, actuality and other attributes.
App StoresApp Stores provide Data Apps, i.e. applica-tions that can be deployed in IDS Connec-tors to execute tasks like transformation, aggregation or analytics on the data. Data Apps may be certified by IDS-approved certification bodies. App Stores can be provided by IDS members and must, them-selves, be certified under IDS standards.

INTRODUCING THE IDS HANDSHAKE
The first major goal of the IDS is to achieve
interoperability between connectors. With the
IDS Connecter Handshake we get the specifica-
tion for the steps required to establish a trus-
ted link between connectors, to describe and
register your data and negotiate contracts for
specific data exchange. The contracts describe
the technical part with both, data and interface
ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
QUESTIONS FOR...FABIANA FOURNIER
Why do you become involved in the Inter-
national Data Spaces Association?
I’ve been working as a researcher at the IBM
Research Lab in Haifa, Israel since 2006. For
many years I was deep in the event-proces-
sing-world and more recently became enam-
oured with blockchain. Specifically, I work on
the Hyperledger Fabric, a blockchain project
under the Linux Foundation. IBM is one of
the frameworks main contributors, bringing
blockchain within reach for enterprises and
organizations. In the scope of my job, I joined
the BOOST EU project, which started in Janu-
ary 2017. One of our main tasks in BOOST is
to integrate between blockchain and IDS tech-
nologies for manufacturing. IBM made a stra-
tegic decision to join the IDSA as a formal mem-
ber and we are now working closely together.
What is so special about the International
Data Spaces Association and your coopera-
tion in the users association?
For me, working together with IDSA has been
an introduction to interesting projects and
offers new opportunities to work closely with

clients. By combining the IDS and blockchain
technologies, we can provide better solutions.
These two strategies are complementary and
will help deliver better value and added bene-
fits to clients.
The International Data Spaces Association
in ten years: What should have been
achieved together until then?
In ten years, organizations will be completely
digitalized and have a secure exchange of data.
We see the efforts of IDSA becoming a formal
standard that will help organizations, large and
small, to securely exchange data in economic
and business networks. From the IBM perspec-
tive, we foresee the standardization of the IBM
blockchain integration and its widespread use
as part of the overall IDS offering.
For the first time, the International Data Spaces
Association offers an interactive webinar se-
quel on the topic of the IDS Reference Architec-
ture Model 2.0, in which all spectra of the IDS
and the Reference Architecture are explained
in a simple and user-friendly manner.
“With this offer we would like to give our mem-
bers, our project partners in the research pro-
jects and all interested parties the possibility to
concentrate on dealing with the IDS approach
and the reference architecture model, and to
create the basis for successful integration of
IDS in data eco systems and future-oriented
business models,” explained Managing Direc-
tor Lars Nagel at the launch of the new webinar
series in early September. Up to and including
the beginning of November, leading experts
such as Prof. Dr. Boris Otto (Fraunhofer ISST),
Dr. Christoph Quix (Fraunhofer FIT), Lars Nagel
(IDSA) and Gerd Brost (Fraunhofer AISEC) take
the participants on an informative excursion
through the IDS.
The first three webinars on the “Context of
the IDS”, “Process Layer of the IDS” and “Data
Governance” have already run successfully. The
latest webinar is entitled “Trust in the IDS” and
will run on 2 November 2018 at 10 a.m.. Gerd
Brost, Senior Researcher Fraunhofer AISEC, will
give the participants a greater understanding
of this topic.
Join the live-webinar and you will have the
chance to ask questions or watch it on our You-
Tube channel afterwards. The webinar series
will be continued, further dates are planned.
descriptions, but the contracts also describe
the usage policies for this specific connection.
The Handshake for the Base Connector Profile
is now finished and the IDSA can get to work on
the Trusted Connector Handshake in detail. You
can pilot the IDS Connector Handshake in the
IDS Lab Sandbox.

EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL DATA SPACE IS BASED ON IDS ARCHITECTURE
“Joining forces towards a European Indus-
trial Data Space (EIDS)” is the mission stated for
BOOST 4.0. 50 partners from 16 EU countries
are working together in this EU research pro-
ject on the development and exemplary imple-
mentation of a common European Industrial
Data Space.
Currently, BOOST 4.0 is one of the largest re-
search projects in the EU with funding amoun-
ting to 20 million euros and private investment
of 100 million euros contributed by the parti-
cipating companies. IDSA plays a central role
in managing and implementing the project:
„The work on the work package aiming at the
development of EIDS will be managed by us,“
explains Christoph Mertens, Senior Consultant
& Innovation Manager EU Projects at IDSA. In
addition, the EIDS is based on the IDS architec-
ture.
“The architecture will be adapted and the EIDS
will be equipped with various applications,”
explains Mertens. “For this purpose, Big Data
applications will be made available to potential
users on the EIDS marketplace. Finally, an ex-
ample implementation will be carried out ac-
cording to a specific problem definition in ten
so-called pilot factories in participating compa-
nies.

ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
ON TRACK FOR GROWTH: 100-MEMBER MARK FAST APPROACHING
The International Data Spaces Association
continues to grow, the 100-member mark is
getting closer and closer. Currently, there are
five new companies and institutions to support
the objectives of IDSA. Both the ENGENEERING
INGEGNERIA INFORMATICS SPA located in
Rome, Italy, and the Finnish company Signal
Solutions Nordic Oy will be contributing to
developing and establishing the IDS from now
on. Moreover, with IBM Deutschland GmbH
we see another well-known company joining
up and recently BetterSolutions S.A. based in
Gdansk, Poland, and bill-X GmbH, a German
software development company, became
members as well.
SOVEREIGN DATA EXCHANGE ON THE COGNITIVE INDUSTRIAL INTERNETTHE INTERNATIONAL DATA SPACES AT THE IMTS
To remain in control over one‘s own data,
use data economically and cooperatively in a
trusted network, and thus creating new value
chains: this is what the International Data
Spaces initiative stands for, in which twelve
Fraunhofer Institutes, with close to 100 inter-
national partners from industry and science,
are working on a new standard for cross-com-
pany data exchange. The International Data
Spaces stage of development progress, the
advantages the standard can offer internatio-
nal companies, as well as the role the initiative
plays within the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excel-
lence Cognitive Internet Technologies, have
been demonstrated at the International Manu-
facturing Technology Show IMTS in Chicago
(September 10 - 15, 2018).
More and more often, service offerings made
by companies consist of a combination of a
physical product with corresponding digital
services, as a tailored solution to fit the indivi-
dual needs of any customer. To be able to offer
such “hybrid service bundles” companies are
increasingly joining forces, making it a neces-
sity to be able to exchange data sovereignly wi-
thin this cooperation. The work and efforts put
into the International Data Spaces initiative,
aim to establish a standard for data exchange
in such business ecosystems. The twelve Fraun-
hofer Institutes, that have been working on this
project since 2015, demonstrated its current
progress and its international applicability at
the IMTS 2018.
While, initially, the scientists work focused on
the development and prototypical realization
of a reference architecture model, it now lies
within a widespread, international coverage.
The declared objective of the International Data
Spaces Association is to elevate the utilization
of the International Data Spaces to a worldwide
basis. „Within global value chain networks, data
will not stop at national borders“, explains Prof.
Boris Otto, director of the research initiative In-
ternational Data Spaces at Fraunhofer. „This is
the reason why a solution for sovereign data
exchange is so sought after in so many places.
We are therefore always in close exchange with
related international initiatives, such as the In-
ternational Internet Consortium IIC, to identify
synergies and ensure interoperability between
architectural designs.“ Thus, companies parti-
cipating in the International Data Spaces will
benefit from this comprehensive network and
will also have the possibility to actively shape
further developments of the International Data
Spaces that perfectly fit to their own individual
requirements.

Release of IDS reference architecture
model version 2.0
“Data are enablers of innovation”, explained
Prof. Dr. Boris Otto, Director of Fraunhofer ISST
and Head of the IDS research project, on the
occasion of the Technology Briefing for “Data
Sovereignty in International Data Spaces“ at the
Fraunhofer booth. That is why companies want
to protect their data and - at the same time -
share them to generate added value. “This cre-
ates a paradoxon. The IDSA with its more than
90 members has set out to resolve this contra-
diction”, emphasised Otto in his presentation
in which he also officially presented the new
IDS reference architecture to the public and se-
veral official international representatives. The
90-page document is the result of joint work
between the Fraunhofer research project and
the International Data Spaces Association to-
gether with numerous member companies and
institutes. “The reference architecture forms a
reliable basis for establishing and implemen-
ting International Data Spaces”, explained Lars
Nagel, Managing Director of the International
Data Spaces Association, in the panel discus-
sion which followed. “This sets everything out
clearly and defines the guidelines. Now, we can
take the next steps in the direction of concrete
implementations and commercial products of
our member companies.“

a new use case brochure demonstrated how
these steps can look in practice at the IDSA
booth where the International Data Spaces
Association was joined by its strategic partner
FIWARE and the member companies Advaneo,
Dataahead, nicos AG, T-Systems and Salzgitter
AG. Numerous exhibits and personal discus-
sions made the exhibition visitors aware of how
International Data Spaces, for example, can be
used in IDSA and FIWARE’s joint use case for
“Predictive Fleet Maintenance“ in logistics, or
to ensure data sovereignty and security of the
Advaneo data marketplace. The new Use Case
brochure, which was published for the first
time at the Hannover Messe, also gives a clear
overview of the 14 current use cases.
IDS model receives award
Presentations underlined the importance of
IDS for trust and governance in the data eco-
nomy. More insights into the world of Inter-
national Data Spaces was given in the talk on
“Forum Industry 4.0 meets the industrial inter-
net”, presented by Lars Nagel and Ulrich Ahle,
CEO FIWARE and board member of IDSA, and
also at the Fraunhofer booth, where the “Inter-
national Data Space” section was awarded first
prize in the Fraunhofer Think Tank Award for
its strategic, target-group-oriented customer
approach and creative presentation. “Overall,
the Hannover Messe was a great success for
the International Data Spaces Association”,
Lars Nagel draws a positive conclusion. “The
decision was right to be presented with our
own booth and many member companies. The
booth was always well frequented, we had a
lot of discussions with interested visitors and
cooperation partners and were able to win
further companies and institutions for the idea
of International Data Spaces.”

DATA SPACES_NOW! DATA SPACES_NOW!
Everything that moves in the Industrial IoT, is based on production
data. Establishing simple, reliable and secure data connections between
machines and management is one of the targets of the International Data
Spaces Association and its members. One of the milestones on the way
to achieving this is the completion of the first criteria catalogue with IoT
solutions which has been developed by the IDSA Certification working
group. The Hamburg-based start-up Cybus was one of the first companies
to successfully submit its Connectware to this criteria piloting. In a next
step, the “Certification” working group will establish the IDS certification
scheme and start the official certification process for IDS participants and
components.
In order to verify the completeness, applicabil-
ity, feasibility and relevance of the catalogue of
certification criteria for the IDS participant cer-
tification, as well as the certification process for
participants, piloting workshops with various
IDSA members (e.g. GESIS, Komsa, Thyssen-
krupp) were conducted. The workshops were
organized by the WG Certification, bringing to-
gether experts in participant certification from
the Working Group with the security officer
and / or the compliance officer from the com-
panies. In addition to the audit readiness, this
validation gave valuable feedback for the list of
certification requirements and the associated
questionnaire.
These 1-day workshops led by the expert
from the Working Group were organized as a
health check. The certification expert explained
the certification process in detail. In a second
phase the audit readiness was evaluated by
going through the catalogue step by step. No
documented evidence was required, only ver-
bal information was collected. This approach
enabled all parties to get a better sense of the
status of the IDS-readiness for the participant,
as well as the significance of each criteria. The
results of the workshop were recorded by the
evaluation lead and distributed to the compa-
ny. The anonymized results were reported back
to the WG Certification.
In regard to the completeness and applicability
of the criteria themselves, the in-depth discus-
sion during the workshops in some cases led to
an adjustment of the wording of a criterion. In
ad- dition the feedback of the piloting led to a
new entry in the dimension matrix of Evalua-
tion Depth and the Extent of the Security Re-
quirements for participant certification (Mem-
ber Level, Management System).

USE CASE #01 ADVANEO
Advaneo advises and accompanies compa-
nies in the field of digital transformation.
One focal point for European railway com-
panies is on questions of standardisation
and digitisation in infrastructure technol-
ogy. This is all about guaranteeing the highest
possible data security to avoid data misuse.
Deutsche Bahn, for example, equips tens
of thousands of railway-track switches with
special sensors that provide the company
with important information about the con-
dition of the points drives and therefore en-
able predictive maintenance. These data are
also of great interest to other companies
so they could even be traded commercially.
In this application scenario, Advaneo serves as
a broker that arranges the secure exchange of
the respective data between provider and user
via IDS structures. On a virtual marketplace, the
“Advaneo Data marketplace”, comprehensive
metadata from different sources are available
on the supply side. Other users of the market-
place can purchase this information to gain the
latest insights or to develop new business models.
Data sovereignty has first priority in all proces-
ses: exchange is only possible via the secured
data space of IDS that safeguards the proces-
ses for the partners and simultaneously guar-
antees adherence to the distinct rules of the
game. All participants in the data exchange are
identified and certified thanks to IDS.
Targets:
+ To exchange critical data securely and
trade them in a non-discriminatory way
+ To guarantee data sovereignty
Partners/Ecosystem:
+ Railway infrastructure companies
• Signal construction company
Benefits:
+ Individual cloud-based data management
marketplace to access and share railway
switches
+ Enables railway suppliers to identify
existing data assets of shunting switches for
new value added
Main technology/IDS components:
+ Adavaneo–IDS broker connector
+ Broker repository and indexing
• Identity access management and clearing

FIRST STABLE RELEASE OF THE IDS INFORMATIONMODEL
The sub-working-group on the IDS informa-
tion model launched its first stable release in
September 2018. The information model is
the core of IDS and forms the basis for inter-
operability between connectors and for data
sovereignty. While the concepts of the model
are part of the reference architecture 2.0, the
group is now finalising the semantic model
and preparing the necessary libraries for your
connectors. You will find the semantic model
on github (www.github.com/IndustrialDa-
taSpace). You can contact the group easily, if
you join the weekly status call on Thursdays at
2pm CET or just connect on the IDSA Jive (www.

SUMMER SCHOOL BRINGS TOGETHER IDS DEVELOPERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLDSUCCESSFUL PROJECT TO BE CONTINUED
The International Data Spaces Association invited the developer commu-
nity to a summer school of a different kind this year. From the beginning
of August to the beginning of September they focused on the develop-
ment of IDS components via Jive. Lots of relevant points were covered
during the summer school including IDS’s basic approach, an overview of
all existing libraries and source code repositories as well as certification
criteria.
“We invited developers to the summer school to provide them with all
the information they need to develop IDSA components,“ explains Sebas-
tian Steinbuß, Director Architecture and initiator of the summer school.
As part of the five-week initiative, the participants not only solved the
tasks at hand but also presented their experience with IDS concepts and
technologies, exchanged ideas and discussed results. Their efforts were
well-rewarded with a „cool“ prize: a box of 200 ice pops.
The summer school is a good mechanism to bring together the IDS con-
tributors who are spread out throughout Europe and the world and to
keep them informed about the latest developments. The summer school
will be held again as a good way to quickly introduce new members and
new developers to the IDS.

GROWTH TOOL REGIONAL IDS HUBSINITIATIVE LAUNCHED TO POSITION THE IDSA IN EUROPE AND BEYOND
Another tool for growth that focuses on exis-
ting industrial structures, associations and net-
works in the respective regions has come to
fruition in dialogue with the European partners
of the International Data Spaces Association:
the regional IDS hubs. Their aim is to make the
benefits of IDS for business model develop-
ments known in different countries and regions
and make them internationally available.
Starting out with an initial partner (“Initial Hub
Facilitator”) in a particular region, i.e. usually
in one country, a small team of institutions
and organisations is brought together that see
themselves collectively as the core of the region-
al hub to drive and set up the essential initia-
tives together. These “core hub members” run
or organise suitable events in the context of di-
gitisation, data-driven business models, Indus-
try 4.0 or similar topics, where IDS technology
and applications are discussed and promoted.
Requirements for designated members of a re-
gional IDS Hub are as follows:
• Excellent reputation in the region and the re-
levant segments
• Relevant background in developing or imple-
menting IT systems
• High potential to act as a catalyst for the dis-
semination of IDS in the region, to recruit
further IDS members and push IDS applica-
tions
• Sufficient capacity for a committed coopera-
tion with companies in the region, with the
IDS head office and with other regional IDS
hubs.
Jurisdiction and responsibility for invoicing
and collection of IDS membership fees as well
as basic member support and communication
shall remain with the IDS head office.
The Initial Hub Facilitator is the coordinating
body for recording and charging the regio-
nal expenses to the IDS Headquarters and
concludes a service agreement with the IDS
Headquarters for this purpose.
Currently, the International Data Spaces As-
sociation is specifically talking with several
countries about establishing the first regional
IDS hubs. All members and those interested
in IDS can look forward to the resulting poten-
tial with respect to the number and variety of
IDS application scenarios and to sharing their
experiences with the respective IDS member
companies.
PERSPECTIVES
MARKET PENETRATION BY THE “MEMBERS GET MEMBERS” INITIATIVE IDSA STARTS NEW INITIATIVE
“The success of IDSA is in the hands of its members and users!“ This
statement, made at their own summit in March, shows that the Inter-
national Data Spaces Association (IDSA) is already focused on engaging
its members in growth and application initiatives. One of the measures
discussed there is now being launched: “Members get members” is the
name of a campaign inviting IDSA members to directly attract potential
new members to the IDSA.
Ralf-Peter Simon, Director Strategy & Growth Support at the IDSA, is con-
vinced: “The advantages and achievements of the IDSA can be best com-
municated by those companies that are already taking a stand for its im-
plementation and are committed members of the IDSA”.
Every one of the more than 90 members across 17 countries can be-
come active within the framework of the initiative. “In doing so, we rely on
a combination of personal approach and convincing performance”, Ralf-
Peter Simon explains.
In addition to sponsors from the member companies, the milestones and
use cases within the International Data Spaces Association should speak
for membership and engagement. Ralf-Peter Simon points out: “Of course,
we do not only present our goals and various initiatives to potential mem-
bers but also share tangible results of our work with them.” It is therefore
planned to report even more consistently on progress in the development
and establishment of the IDSA and to foster the number of use cases. “We
are heading in the right direction”, Simon comments, “and we would like
to pursue this with many more new members.”

WHY DOES IDS TALK ABOUT BLOCKCHAIN?
Recently Blockchain and Distributed Ledger
Technologies are a relevant topic for all of us. Of
course the question for the IDSA and all mem-
bers of the IDSA is: How do Distributed Ledger
Technologies and IDS fit together? We already
realized that there are those Distributed Led-
ger Use Cases and the IDS Use Cases, but how
do generic Use Cases look like, which combine
both? The Working Group Architecture started
a new Sub-Working Group on IDS and Blok-
chain to answer this question. The Group is led
by Matthijs Punter (TNO). The members, e.g.
TNO, Fraunhofer, IBM, Bosch and Engineering,
are collaborating on the definition of true IDS
and Blockchain Use Cases. All of them do alrea-
dy work on this in different projects. This is the
foundation for a White Paper on IDS and Block-
chain. Everyone is invited to join the group on
Jive to bring in his knowledge and opinion. The
first Version of the White Paper will be published
at the end of 2018. The results will be part of
your next Reference Architecture Model 3.0,
which will be released in April 2019.
FOUR MORE EU RESEARCH PROJECTS BRING IDS APPROACH TO THE WORLD
The IDS concept has been part of national
and international research projects ever sin-
ce it began. These have now been extended
with four more EU research projects in highly
relevant research areas such as artificial in-
telligence and federated data marketplaces
where IDS will take on a central role and the
International Data Spaces Association is part
of the successful consortium. These research
projects will help to further develop the refer-
ence architecture and implement and estab-
lish the idea of IDS and bring it into the world:

FOCUS ON SME REQUIREMENTSSME ALLIANCE WITHIN IDSA PRESENTS APPLICATION SCENARIOS AT IOT WORLD CONGRESS
In practice, new data-based business models
represent different challenges to small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) than to lar-
ger companies: they usually suffer from having
more limited resources, IT capabilities and ca-
pacities, and a lack of business development
specialists, etc.. Their requirements for ease of
implementation and use and for relatively low
investment levels play a key role when consi-
dering investments in technology-based inno-
vation.
These specific requirements are addressed by
an initiative recently set up within the Interna-
tional Data Spaces Association. A number of
SMEs have started to develop IDS-based ser-
vices in a joint application environment which
allows them to test connectivity and interop-
erability in selected application scenarios and
to demonstrate how IDS connectors and IDS
roles, such as Data Provider, Data Broker, Data
User, Identity Provider interact. The results of
their work will be presented at the IoT Solu-
tions World Congress (16 – 18 October) in Bar-
celona, Spain.
The above initiative was kicked off under the
label of SME Alliance during an initial mee-
ting of a number of SME companies within the
IDSA in May. These partners decided in July to
push ahead and present the above-mentioned
scenarios early in Q4 2018 and chose the IoT
World Congress as the ideal event to step out
in public.
“The IoT World is a unique platform for the
IDSA and our SME Alliance members to pre-
sent practical application scenarios. Bringing
IDSA architecture and technology to life is a pi-
votal milestone for all of us”, explains Ralf-
Peter Simon, IDSA Director Strategy & Growth
Support.

16 - 18 OCT 2018
BARCELONA
SPAIN
LARGE TRADE FAIR APPEARANCE AT THE IOT SOLUTIONS WORLD CONGRESS IN BARCELONA
IDSA’s first appearance at the IoT Solutions
World Congress last autumn was a great suc-
cess. That is why the International Data Spaces
Association will once again be attending the
leading international IoT event in Barcelona in
2018, where they will present even more ap-
plication scenarios and practical examples of
IDS on an even larger stand area from 16 to 18
October.
90 square meters encompasses the booth that
IDSA repeatedly shares with Fiware Founda-
tion to present their IDS application scenarios.
Alongside these use-cases, implementing the
IDS-connector in production use-cases, the fo-
cus on this appearance is implementing further
components of the Reference Architecture.
Also Advaneo GmbH AG shows among others
their broker-solution and nicos AG besides
the IDS-compliant Industry-4.0-machine in the
form of the robot Wall-E, also the implemen-
tation of the Dynamic Attribute Provisioning
Services and the Identity Provider. Hence the
IDSA takes a further step towards the IOT-Com-
munity to solve important and so far unsolved
challenges related to trust, data use and inter-
operability in the Internet of Things and to de-
monstrate this implemented in practice.

SMART ENERGY NEW KEY ISSUE AT FIWARE GLOBAL SUMMITIDSA REPRESENTED AS EXHIBITOR AT THE FIFTH EDITION OF THE EVENT
FIWARE GLOBAL
SUMMIT
27- 28 NOV
MALAGA
SPAIN
90 speakers and 574 participants from 36
countries were guests at the last FIWARE Glo-
bal Summit - and there could be even more
at the fifth edition of the international event:
on 27 and 28 November, innovators, thought
leaders, entrepreneurs, startups and investors
for large software releases, business and dis-
ruptive technology will meet in Malaga, Spain,
to discuss and further their knowledge of the
adoption of de-facto standards of open source,
reusable components that implement common
APIs and interfaces for the portability and in-
teroperability of applications. Once again, the
IDS approach will be an important feature at
the 5th FIWARE Global Summit. After all, IDS
member and our strategic partner FIWARE can
implement and bring to life the IDS architec-
ture with ready-made open source software
components. This is also how use cases from
well-known international companies were cre-
ated and they will be presented at the Summit
as well.
This Summit will introduce a new track devo-
ted to Smart Energy and the Open Source for
Energy transition to create a sustainable energy
ecosystem. This key issue will complement the
already established tracks Smart Cities, Smart
Agrifood and Smart Industry and Tech.
Vision: IDS is a global
de facto market standard for the sovereign use of
data
As the perception of date value is gaining impor-tance in the global value creation, the IDS approach enables global dynamic data and business trans- actions between participants across all domains, sectors and industries without establishing a central infrastructure, thus peer-to-peer. As such, the IDS is capable of linking single objects up to entire plat-forms.
The IDS reference architecture forms the basis for data ecosystems and market places based on Euro-pean values, i. e. data privacy and security, and offers equal opportunities through a federated design. That is why the IDS Association has specified an architecture, interfaces and sample code for an open, secure data ecosystem made up of trusted partners.
Trust between participants and data-sovereignty are placed at the heart of the IDS: They will be guaranteed for data creators with respect to who is using their data, for how long, for which application, how many times and according to which terms & conditions.
The IDS ecosystem is vendor independent by design and will achieve and defend its status as de facto market standard for the trade and exchange of all kinds of data assets. Finding and authenticating appropriate transfer partners will be substantially facilitated, so will the legal and commercial govern-ance of transactions.
By permanently screening and adopting new developments and requirements, the International Data Spaces Association establishes itself as a sustainable building block for ecosystems to make the data economy come true.
