Business, ICT and electricity supply

Businesses and legislation/standards: Environment, ISO, SOX, Basel2, ITIL

Datacentres4% of US Electricity consumed5-10% of energy consumption of western economiesrepresent 2% of total CO2 emissions worldwide

ICT Growth = data centre growth, increased specific needs

On Average 30% of total electricity cost goes to IT; energy can be bigger than equipment cost

Source: The Green Grid

Why IT people do not look at the electricity bill:Bill comes much later than the charges are generatedThey are not IT department responsibilityThe electricity account could be included in wider facilities account

Grounding - Standards Guidance

EN 50310-2000 TIA-942

Page 28: Data Center Solutions - CiscoBuilding Construction Building Components Roofing Doors & Windows Entry Lobby Admin Offices Security Office Operations Center Restrooms/Break Areas UPS

Industry Standards Applicable to Proper Grounding of Data Centers. J-STD-607-A ,Telecommunications Industry Association and Electronics Industry Alliance Joint Standard. This standard specifies how to properly ground the building at the entrance facility and extending that ground using Backbone Cabling to a Grounding Busbar in the Data Center.TIA-942 ,Telecommunications Industry Association Standard. This standard specifies how to create a common bonding network within the Data Center and to properly ground the equipment racks, cabinets and network equipment.IEEE-1100 ,Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers. The Emerald Book is more theoretical than practical. However, it is the main source of grounding information for topics covered by TIA-942, J-STD-607-A and the National Electric Code(NEC).
