Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862
• A system to provide funds to establish, support and maintain at least one college in each state to teach agriculture, mechanical arts and military sciences.
• “Liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions of life.”
William Henry Hatch
Hatch Act of 1887
• Provided federal funding for state experiment stations
• Purpose was to conduct research to improve production agriculture
Smith-Lever Act of 1914• Established Cooperative Extension Service
• Purpose was to provide and extension of the land grant college to local communities
• Placed “agents” of the university in local counties
