PREFACE

The spring of 1988 was the beginning of what will probably become a life l ong project . It was at this time, I became very interested in genealogy. It so happened that, this was the Centennial year for the Burlington Brethren Church. Later through my research I found that it was really the 105th year for the Burlington Church. While working on the Burlington Church history,

5

I came to realize that we had strong ties to the Darwin Brethren. Some of our members came from the Darwin Church in 1926 when this church was disbanded. Through my searching for the early roots of Burlington I found that one of our charter members was from the Darwin area and in fact the Darwin Church building was on his land. Sanford Seawright was a major figure in the birth of the Burlington and Darwin Brethren Churches. It was then that I realized that this loyal body of Brethren might be forgotten in this next generation if a history was not recorded . I then began my journey into the search for the names of those dear, devoted Brethren of the Darwin Church. I have tried to locate and record as many of these people as possible. I have only recorded people who I believe attended and have not listed all o f their children if these children were born when the parents were not going to this Church. I am sorry for .anyone I have missed. This book is dedicated t o those pioneer Brethren who planted this church and committed their lives to serving our Lord.

I would also like to dedicate this book to a dear l ady I have had the privilage to mee t through my searching for information . Ova Barnard Ferguson , t o my knowledge, is the o ldest living member of the Darwin Bre thren Church. She is 99 yea rs of age at the time of this writting, April 1990.

THE DARWIN BRETHREN CHURCH

The Darwin Brethren Church had its beginnings at the out come of a series of meetings held by ROY ~USSELL TEETER. There were only 4 Brethren at the start of the 3 week services. SANFORD and MARY SEAWRIGHT from the Salem Brethren Church south of Burlington on state road 29 and county road 750S. Carroll County. The other 2 Brethren were from the Flora 1st Brethren Church. R.R.'TEETER, held his services at the Darwin Methodist Church located at the S.E. corner of state road 29 and county road 200S. These meetings which were held in February 1897 closed when they were refused continued use of the church house. At this time there were 29 who desired to worship as Brethren in this area of Carroll County.

The following April the congregation again assembled this _time in the school house located 1 mile north of the Methodist Church at state road 29 and county road 100S on the south east corner . I believe this was refered to as the Pleasent Valley School. At this time the Darwin Brethren Church was organi zed with 39 charter members. Bro. TEETER was chosen as pastor and elder. He was also pastoring the Mount Pleasant Church, in Cambr ia , IN. south east of Rossville in Clinton County, In. R.R.TEETER remained in this position until his removal from the state to the Milledgeville Church,Illinois.

Almost immediately after the organization in April 1897, a movement was started to build a church house. On January 23, 1898 a nice large church house was dedicated to the Lord by the Darwin Brethren. The new church building was l ocated on the S.E. corner of county roads 200S and 625E. in Burlington township. The property was owned by SANFORD H. SEAWRIGHT and later by WILLIAM F. BARNARD. The church building was closed in 1926 and later used for storage. Some time after 1926 it was distroyed by a tornado.

The people of the Darwin Brethren were dedicated to the Lord. Many came to the Burlington ~t Brethren Church and others went to the Flora 1st. Brethren Church. Tpe church was only in existence for 29 years but during these years men, women and children grew in their walk with the Lord Jesus Christ. ~heir rescendants are a tribute to these dear Brethren.
