Press Release: 4th April 2016: Stacey's memory lives on in new Neuroblastoms Cancer Charity It is now over one year since nine year old Stacey Mowle from Gravesend, Kent sadly passed away after bravely fighting Neuroblastoma Cancer for four years. But her memory lives on in the form of a new Charity - 'Stacey's Smiles' which is a direct legacy from the former Stacey Mowle Appeal. The Stacey Mowle Appeal attracted around 10,000 followers on Social Media along with sixteen Personality Patrons who all became close to the Mowle family and included Harry Redknapp, Linda Robson, Cheryl Baker and Graham Roberts. Unfortunately during Stacey's battle with Cancer, her parents, Warren and Samantha never had enough spare money to 'treat' Stacey when she was out of hospital on occasions. As all funding was spent on her extensive treatment. Now Stacey's Smiles has been launched by Warren and Samantha to make sure that any Neuroblastoma Cancer families who find themselves in the same unfortunate situation as Warren and Samantha will be given support. The Stacey's Smiles charity has been specifically formed to raise Neuroblastoma awareness in Children and also grant wishes and organise 'treats' and create special memories for children sufferers and their families to support the theory that a happy 'Neuroblastoma Child' will respond more positively to harsh treatments. Working with a business perspective slogan of 'Partners not Pockets' the charity's extensive team of supporters believe that charity is very much a 'two way street' and businesses that support Stacey's Smiles with advice, networking and promotion will be featured on our website and social media channels as Stacey's Partners. For more information on the Stacey's Smiles Charity visit www.staceyssmiles.org.uk Ends: 248 words Editors: For additional information please contact: Warren at [email protected] or [email protected] STACEY'S SMILES: PO Box 475 Gravesend Kent DA12 9LR Tel: 0333 323 1883 E: [email protected] Patrons: Louis Tomlinson, Cheryl Baker, Linda Robson, Harry Redknapp, Joe Pasquale, Graham Roberts, Paul Konchesky, Tamera Foster, Kirsty Curtis, Pixie McKenna, Chris Till Genny Jones, Michael Dene, Leanne Jones, Paul Manners and Charlie Grima:

Dear Readers,As usual this month’s edition is jam packed with lots of local information and local businesses. Please support as many as you can - “use them or lose them!”

Don’t forget that we run Dartford Living alongside volunteer members of the local community FOR the local community. Dartford Living is YOUR magazine, the only independently run magazine serving the local area with information, fun, good news and positive local stories! Feel free to get in touch if you would like to write an article for the magazine. If writing is not for you then perhaps you could volunteer to deliver 100 or so magazines to your local roads - you will guarantee your copy of the magazine and get a little exercise as well!

We deliver to thousands of homes and businesses in the local area, however if you don’t always receive a copy directly through your door, you can pick up a copy from various drop off points. These include Dartford Football Club, numerous local libraries, Fairfield Leisure Centre, The Priory Shopping Centre, Stephen Oliver Art Gallery, numerous health centres and local Barclays branches. The ‘Previous Editions’ section of the Dartford Living website also includes electronic versions of Dartford Living magazine. Additionally, if you email [email protected] we will add you to our newsletter email mailing list and contact you just once a month with an electronic copy of Dartford Living! Over 4,500 local people already do this!

Featured Local Business

There are early-bird places available at the Leaders are Readers summer schools this year until the end of June. Booking your child’s place early means you save £££s off the full fees. So if you are planning to attend – you might as well save some cash…

Over the past 8 years, the Leaders are Readers summer schools have become established as London and surrounding areas’ academic camp for children aged 3 to 11. Their summer school is designed to be challenging yet fun, where children develop strategies and skills in critical thinking, comprehension and reading, creative writing, language and vocabulary, mathematical reasoning, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, and also prepare for 11+, 10+, 8+, 7+, 5+, 4+ assessments. Students make educational strides while enjoying fun break times and creating friendships.

Ninety-five percent of parents say, “My child gained self-

confidence at the Leaders are Readers summer school.” Book a trial day to see the setting at our Centre in Dartford.

Last year, the Leaders are Readers Super-Duper Early-Bird places sold out before the end of May at some centres, saving parents almost 23% on full price. The Super-Duper Early-Bird places are very limited so snap them up quickly. But do not despair – they also have April, May and June early-bird places. These are still a real bargain, so book in time.

DARTFORD LIVING MEETS....... BY KELLY GOLDSWORTHY

James Hazel, 24, from Greenhithe went to Wilmington Grammar School and was working in insurance when, in September 2013 he was involved in a road traffic accident on the A2. James was hit by a lorry, van and car. Having broken numerous bones, James was placed in an induced coma, was resuscitated twice and awoke to find his left leg had been amputated above the knee. Despite being told he would be in hospital for three months, James discharged himself after 3 weeks, returning to work before Christmas 2013.

James said ‘ It took a while to sink in I had lost my leg, but I felt really fortunate to be alive. It gave me perspective that so that my primary emotion was never down. I was too bored sitting in the hospital. I’m not the sort of person who can do nothing.’’

‘I was always really active and sporty and I was determined that having a disability was not going to stop me. I currently have a standard health service prosthethic, which although is better than a kick in the teeth, limits my movement in day to day life. It can’t hold any resistance so it’s not much good in a lot of situations, like going up stairs for example. My girlfriend and I went wild camping around

western Europe recently and the leg was a hindrance so I rarely wore it, just having my crutches.’

‘I’m currently raising funds to purchase a technologically advanced prosthetic, which will make activities that I currently struggle with much, much easier. Unfortunately, it’s not cheap. The knee itself is £58,000 and with the socket, ankle joint and foot it costs £72,000. Although I do my best not to let my disability stop me doing anything if I manage to get this leg it will change my life more than most people could ever imagine.’

‘I’m so thrilled with the money people have donated so far. I’ve recently taken part in a Spartun Race and my old hockey team are putting on an event too. I’m so grateful. I’m determined losing a leg won’t stop me doing what I want to do in life.’

To donate to James’ new leg appeal go to www.legforjames.co.uk

DARTFORD LIVING MEETS....... BY KELLY GOLDSWORTHY

Kelly met with Sue Ingram. Sue is the Group Scout Leader for Brent 6th Dartford Scout Group. She also runs Winnipeg Beavers.

Having lived in Dartford since 1989 Sue explained that she likes the area: ‘ I like the community and the people. Stone Parish Council do a lot too. Having previously worked as a hairdresser, a traffic warden and in schools, Sue now fundraises through Beavers for Caledonian Nursery in The Gambia. Her efforts have, so far, enabled a classroom to be built, a teacher’s training funded and lots of other items bought or donated to help the school. Sue explained that this fundraising is very rewarding.

Sue explained how she got involved in Scouting: ‘24 years ago, my children were involved and I came in as a helper then eventually became leader. My children have grown up now but I’ve stayed because I love seeing what the children get out of it. It’s a good movement to be in. The kids get the adventure, excitement and they learn new skills in a safe environment away from home. You watch them grow more confident and competent. The Scouting

movement offers so much.’Sue’s husband is a scout leader too. Sue said ‘Getting leaders is hard going. We need volunteers to keep going. People who do volunteer will find they get so much out of it. There are exciting times ahead. We are going to move to a building that is being built in Cotton Lane as soon as it’s completed we can expand even more. We’ve got an Explorers unit opening in September so we need more leaders for this great scout group as we grow even more. Anyone involved gets good support from training and the The brent 6th Dartford Scout group support all the adults who volunteer in the group.

If you are interested in being a Scouting Leader or to donate to the Gambia Appeal call Sue on 07845170821.

This week I want to ask you a question, are you a ‘pet owner’ or a ‘pet parent’? Because latest reports suggest that owners considering themselves to have ‘fur babies’ as opposed to pets is more common than ever”! Let’s have a little look at what the reports suggest…

In 2004, a study undertaken at a dog bakery (yes, you read this correctly!) analysed the behaviour of the dog owners who attended, toward their pets. It suggested that those who engaged in more extravagant activities with their pet – such as attending ‘Yappy hour’ sessions at their local dog ‘barkery’ – demonstrated a unique and special type of connection with that pet, which went beyond most people’s relationship with their dog. The research describes how “most of the dog lovers interviewed do not perceive their dogs as dogs; they are family members, best friends, and fur babies. These dog lovers also do not perceive themselves as dog owners; they are parents.”

That was in 2004, but times have changed a lot over the past 12 years and I would happily bet that this type of dog owner is now far more common. It only takes for us to consider the sheer amount of money that pet owners are lavishing on their pets each year to know Britain is crazy about their pets! In 2015 we spent over £6billion on our loving companions!

This feeling of mine is supported by the latest article from the Pet Gazette titled “Pet lovers see themselves as ‘parents’ not owners”. The article describes how “more owners in the US, the UK and Japan view themselves as their pet’s ‘parent’, even referring to themselves as their animal’s mother of father.” This is further supported by Mintel who have found that “the bond between a pet and their owner is starting to resemble very closely that between a parent and a child”.

According to a report in The Express, more than 80% of pet owners admit to giving their fur friends the same attention and love that they give to their children. A quote from the article reads; “The UK has transformed from being a nation of pet owners to being a nation of pet parents who enjoy spending time with and treating their pet.”

All fascinating stuff which makes for a great read – all those pets being wonderfully cared for! At easipetcare, we are all about the care – it’s in our strapline! So we thoroughly support this wave of ‘pet parents’ and are here to support your fur babies whenever they need us .

IN A HANDBAG!

Handbags. Large, small, envelope, clutch, cross-body, shoppers. So many different shapes, sizes and colours; price ranges from about five pounds to the cost of a small house for the jewel encrusted designer bags.

Ah, but how useful are they. What are handbags actually for? On one level they are a very personal indicator of who we are. They contain the stuff we need for everyday life, plus the minutiae of things we accumulate over time. They give clues to our personalities.

I took a quick look in the six I own, ranging from a small blue silk clutch bag to a sensible over arm bag. Being well ordered, (there are other names for it, not so polite) all of them had packets of tissues, business cards, a pen and notepad, paracetamol and a comb inside. There was an emergency fiver in the clutch bag – it’s simply too small to accommodate anything other than a purse and a credit card. No notebook or pen either.

The biggest surprise was the over arm bag. It was like diving in Aladdin’s cave. Four lipsticks, a paperback, my passport, old receipts, photos, a packet of cat treats and a set of keys belonging to who knows what.

Bearing in mind I usually travel light, why did I buy such a large bag? The only explanation I can offer is that I have a family. I had to factor in Other Half’s wallet, keys, matches and pipe. Also any coupons he wanted to use, plus the items he inevitably bought when we were out.

In the mists of time my bag would also contain anything the offspring deemed necessary. This might be a change of clothes for Action Man or Barbie, or a stable of Pony in my Pocket toys. Packets of sweets, spare batteries and a mobile phone the size of a brick! Never mind my own purse, and other stuff.

Thankfully, men are more aware of the need for their own handbags nowadays. I’m not talking about backpacks, or heaven forbid the nylon drawstring sports bag, but a proper leather bag. They are considered fashionable and appropriate – a ‘man bag’ tells people you are important. You have a tablet, an expensive mobile, an Oyster card. A ‘man bag’ suggests a high flier, someone going places.

Retailers such as Jack Wills, River Island and others have a good range of important looking bags for men.

I do wonder how men would cope though, if we ladies stopped taking our own bags out. I can’t see any of them being overjoyed at carrying stuff we need around with them. Especially the Barbie clothes!

TREADING THE BOARDS

We have an excellent theatre in our town – The Orchard. I’ve seen many performances over the years, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. I get the quarterly programme and a fine variety of events are offered. However, we do now seem to miss out on the bigger names in the field of entertainment and it set me wondering why.

The Orchard is a first class theatre. It is modern, comfortable, has a decent bar and helpful staff. I was lucky enough to complete a backstage tour some while ago and see the workings of the theatre.

Unfortunately, what it doesn’t attract, are plays starring the better known artists. Recently, I had to travel to Richmond to see ‘Hobson’s Choice’. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the theatre wasn’t a patch on our local venue. Apart from the train journey across to London and back out again, the theatre is over one hundred years old. It was built when an evening at the theatre was for the upper classes. It is small, the seats were uncomfortable, the foyer minuscule and very crowded. The bar was tiny. The play has toured Bath, Milton Keynes and Nottingham, and is opening in Norwich. Richmond was the nearest venue to me. I’ve journeyed to the Theatre Royal at Windsor, as well as the West End to see live plays.

Why doesn’t The Orchard attract promoters of these plays? Is it because we are too near London for them to bother with? Is it anything to do with the costs? The town itself? From my point of view, the stall ticket I would have liked, when booking to see the Alan Ayckbourn play ‘How The Other Half Loves’ in the West End is £93! I’ve had to settle for a seat right at the back, and I’m still paying over £40 for it. Being slightly hard of hearing and with poor eyesight, my theatre trip will turn into a survival course with spare hearing aid batteries, binoculars and probably a KitKat too.

Please, people at The Orchard, give a thought to us poor live theatre aficionados who would like to see some well written and well acted plays locally, rather than having the remortgage the house just for a night out. Thank you

Two youths have been arrested and charged in relation to 28 offences over the theft of motorbikes across Plumstead, Erith, Abbey Wood and Dartford. Billy Amos, 19, and Connor Money, 18, who are both from Erith, were arrested on Wednesday March 16th by officers from Metropolitan Police.

Billy Amos is charged with 12 offences - four counts of theft of motorbikes, one count of burglary, one count of attempted burglary, two counts of driving without a licence, two counts of driving without insurance, and two counts of riding a bike without protective headgear.

Connor Money is charged with 16 offences - five counts of theft of a motorbike, one count of burglary, one count of attempted burglary, two counts of driving without a licence, two counts of driving without insurance, two counts of riding a bike without protective headgear and three counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order. This is merely the tip of an iceberg - the problem of illegal riders in the North of the borough is a big one, although this has extended over the Bexley border into and around Dartford Heath as well.

These arrests followed an investigation by Bexley Police into bike theft in Kent and south-east London. The local Safer Neighbourhood Police teams have also been busy recently and are working with Bexley Neighbourhood Watch to expand the membership of a new scheme called BIKEWATCH, here residents can either join to pass on information to the police via Neighbourhood Watch or complete an anonymous card and send it in if they do not want to join or fear giving their details.

A group of 20 motor cycles were identified early by unmarked Police vehicles travelling to the area. The group and were stopped dealt with by Police resulting in a large number of vehicle seizures for offences such as no insurance and no MOT. A large number of fixed penalty notices were also issued and several riders were reported and summonsed for court for various traffic offences. 4 arrests were also made for offences such as Burglary, Possession of drugs and driving under the influence of drugs. Of note one of the main organisers of the activity, who was disqualified from driving, had been identified as being involved in activity the previous week on Sunday 21st February. He was arrested early on the Sunday morning and later charged and remanded to court

the next morning. He appeared at Bexley Magistrates Court on Monday 29th February and received a 12 week custodial sentence.

Police have continued with the same plans for the past two weeks deploying large numbers of officers to the area. We are pleased to report that there have been no incidents involving motor cycle related Anti-Social behaviour for three weeks running. The tactics will continue moving forward and robust action taken against anyone found engaging in such activity in the future.

Should anyone wish to help with information to continue to crackdown on the growing biker gang menace, which is widespread throughout the UK and has resulted in a baby being injured when a buggy was clipped by a bike in Essex and a dog killed by a quad-bike in Greenwich, please email Bexley Neighbourhood Watch for BikeWatch information on

ellenor reaches out to the community in Dartford

Following the launch of its hub in Swanley last year, ellenor has recently started a similar initiative in Dartford – both of which give local people, patients and carers the opportunity to access support and information about ellenor’s services in the heart of their community.

These community initiatives both provide information hubs and clinics and are located at the Swanley Link (opposite Asda) and at The Meeting Place at the Orchard Shopping Centre in Dartford.

“One of ellenor’s visions is to reach more people in the community who need our care or support,” explains Sarah Green, Senior Staff Nurse, Patient and Family Support Team at ellenor.

ellenor has responded to the needs of patients to have a presence in the local community. The charity provides 90% of its care in the home – so offering more services in the community is a natural next step.

“By having a presence in the local community it gives us the opportunity to let our community know who we are and what we do,” says Sarah. “By working in partnership with the people of the community, other care providers and local businesses we can raise awareness and reach more of our community.”

Dementia Awareness Week 15th – 21st May

You are not alone!

Dementia affects many 100’s of people living in Dartford and Dementia Awareness week is all about letting people know that you can live well with dementia if you have the right support.

There are many services available for people affected by dementia, both for the person with dementia and for their Carers and families, and during awareness week we want to let people know what help and support is available to them.

Support can range from Day Care, Advice, Memory Cafes, Peer Support, Carers Support Groups, Benefits and Befriending, and is provided by many local groups, charities and organisations – part of raising awareness is to let people know who can help with what.

For the Dartford Community itself, Dementia Friends sessions run regularly throughout the year, helping to make Dartford a better place to live if you do have dementia.

If you would like to know more about dementia, or services that may help support you, please feel free to come along to our Memory Café on Wednesday 18th May at the Orchard Shopping Centre (opposite Boots) from 10.00 – 12.00.

Alternatively, you can ring the Dementia Helpline :

2016 Maserati Levante

The Maserati Levante is a new luxury SUV and the brand’s first offering in that category, claiming it’s one of the sportiest cars in the class with 5 seats and a 580-litre boot. Buyers will be able to choose from three engine options; two petrols and one diesel. All are 3.0-litre units with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive as standard. From the entry-level petrol producing 345bhp to the more powerful Levante S producing 424bhp. Diesel buyers get a 271bhp, 3.0-litre unit, promising slightly more impressive fuel economy than the petrol versions. As you’d expect, standard specification is generous. All models come with leather seats, an 8.4in touchscreen infotainment system, alloy wheels, electrically operated tailgate, climate control and air suspension as standard. Maserati hasn’t announced pricing for the Levante yet but expect a starting price of around £60,000 and due to arrive in the UK before the end of 2016.

2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia

Only the top-of-the-range Quadrifoglio version has been revealed so far, which comes with short overhangs front and rear, and a long bonnet. The arrival of the Giulia also heralds the debut of a new logo for Alfa Romeo. The only engine that has been confirmed for the Giulia so far is a six-cylinder 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, developing 503bhp that will go into the range-topping Quadrifoglio model. The Giulia will also offer several engines from the rest of the Alfa Romeo range, including the 235bhp 1750cc petrol engine. An 8.8-inch display screen inside is controlled via a dial, and can connect to both Apple and Android mobile devices for phone calls and music streaming. There’s also a TomTom sat-nav system and the dash also features Alfa’s DNA driving mode switch. There is no word on pricing for the new Giulia yet, but expected to cost from around £29,000 when sales start in September 2016.

2016 Fiat Tipo Fiat has revealed the Tipo in estate and hatchback f o r m a t s . T h e styling will follow that of the 124, with swept-back h e a d l i g h t s , a horizontal front grille and chrome detailing. The Tipo’s engine range is made up of two diesel motors (1.3 and 1.6-litre units with 94bhp and 118bhp respectively) and three petrol units: a 94bhp 1.4-litre motor and a 1.6-litre 108bhp engine.A turbocharged 1.4-litre engine with 118bhp tops the petrol engine range. The entry-level Tipo has air-con, remote central locking, electric front windows – and rear windows in the estate - electric mirrors, a multi-function steering wheel and Bluetooth connectivity. Prices haven’t been announced, but expect the Tipo hatchback to be priced in line with competitors such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai i30, at around £16,000 with sales starting in September 2016.

BeddingAs your spring bedding plants go over, removethem and compost them. Once the display hascompletely finished, dig over and prepare theground ready for your summer bedding plants.Beware of late frosts and have fleece on stand-byready to protect any summer bedding and othertender plants Garden Health CheckKeep your spring bedding displays – includingbulbs – flowering well by feeding weekly with ahigh potash liquid fertiliser. And remember todeadhead – that is removing the faded flowers anddeveloping seed heads – and you’ll be rewardedwith a further flush of flowers or an extendeddisplay. Many border plants will need support andtying in to prevent them from being damagedand flopping all over the garden. Make sure thesupports are in place early as it can be difficult todo when they’re in full growth. Greenhouse ActivityAs greenhouse plants will be growing quickly now, check them regularly to see whether they needrepotting. If they do, repot into the next size potusing a good quality compost. Good ventilation, regular watering and maybe even some shading arevital at this time of year to keep plants strong andhealthy. The greenhouse is a superb environmentfor growing plants to perfection – but it’s perfectfor pests too – especially whitefly. So keep a closeeye on all your plants and treat any pest outbreaksas they occur.

LawncareYour lawn should be growing fast this month soyou will need to cut it regularly – once or twice aweek – to keep it looking good. Now’s also a goodtime to feed the grass for a lush, healthy lawn, socheck out our range of lawn fertilisers. Weedsand even moss may also be growing strongly thismonth, so take action to keep them under controlwith a lawn feed, weed and mosskiller. Then reseed any gaps with lawn seed.

PestwatchThe late spring weather is perfect for many pestsand diseases to get a stronghold in the garden, somake sure you carry out regular health checkson all your plants, but especially roses, beddingplants and herbaceous perennials. Prevention isalways better than cure so keep looking over yourplants and deal with any problems as soon as yousee them. A ready-to-use spray ensures you havesomething ready to hand as soon as you see thefirst signs of trouble. Slugs and snails will also bevery active now, so protect your plants from theseravenous eaters with your favourite control methods. Plants of the MonthBrighten up your garden with our Plants of theMonth. At this time of year there are so manyshrubs and climbers to choose from, including:Ceanothus, Choisya, Cytisus, rhododendrons anda vast array of evergreens. Clematis montana, wisteria; plus plenty of herbaceous perennialslike aquilegia, dicentra, euphorbia and peonies. Plant Up ContainersSummer containers and hanging baskets canbe placed outside at the end of May or earlyJune – after the last frost. But, you can plantthem up as soon as you like, as long as you havesomewhere protected from frost, with good light – agreenhouse or grow house is the perfect place. Byplanting now they’ll look full and ready to burstinto colour for the summer. Plant Up TomatoesNow’s the time to plant out greenhouse tomatoesfor a bumper crop; and we have a good selectionof plants in stock. You’ll need something to growthem in – such as growing-bags, 10 inch pots orgrowing rings filled with potting compost. If youfind that growing-bags dry out too quickly – andthe bottom of the fruit turns black – then cut thebags in half widthways, stand them on end andput one plant in each half.

Gardening Hints and Tips - May

Time to up your game and move on from strict diets! No more weighing, measuring, counting calories, adding up points, or saving your sins!

The bottom line when it comes to weight loss is energy balance (i.e. calories in vs calories out), but to do this correctly you don’t need to use a fancy calculation to work out how many calories you should be eating, you just need to establish a baseline and work from there.

I challenge you this month to use the following, simple method for determining your portion sizes:

Use your hand (it’s proportionate to your body size, so suited to YOU!)

Your Protein portion (meat, fish, eggs, cheese etc.) should be the size of your palm.

Your Carbohydrate portion (potato, rice, pasta, beans, fruit etc.) should fit into your cupped palm.

Your Vegetable portion should be the size of your fist.

Your Fat portions (oil, butter, nuts, seeds) should be the size of your thumb.

Aim to eat 3-4 meals per day following these guidelines (remember, if you have fruit or pudding, it comes within your portions, not as well as, so generally best to leave dessert out in favour of more nutritious foods like veg).

Keep a food diary, writing down everything you eat and drink (in as much detail as possible) – don’t worry, this is just for the first week.

For week two, simply repeat your food diary exactly. It’s got all the foods you love, and will establish consistency.

If after the two weeks your weight has stayed the same or gone up, reduce calories slightly. If your weight has come down a bit (1-2 lbs a week) – keep doing what you’re doing.

If your weight has dropped dramatically – add in some calories (we don’t want to lose it too fast as this will cause problems later on).

Give this a try and see how you get on. It’s far better and easier than many of the diets people choose to follow and there are no banned foods or points or sins to get stressed about.Once you’ve mastered this, then (and only then) do you need to think about cutting foods out, macronutrients, micronutrients, meal timings etc.

Good luck!

If you need more help, I offer one-to-one and group training out of Crayford gym.

Each month Paul Conradi, Chartered Accountant from Conradi Morrison & Co will be giving us his professional advice for small businesses.

All businesses who sell alcohol to other businesses, ie wholesalers and manufacturers must apply for approval under the new Alcohol Wholesale Registration Scheme (AWRS). The application for approval under the scheme must be made by 31st March 2016.

The AWRS is intended to prevent the sale of illegally imported alcohol in the UK by requiring all registered members to undertake due diligence on the supply chain and record that work. The Government is also concerned that not all alcohol producers are paying the correct alcohol duties or even producing safe products.

HMRC will review what diligency checks have been made and there are fixed and variable penalties for a business not

complying. It will also be a criminal offence to buy wholesale alcohol from a person who should have been approved under the AWRS but is not.

Approval under the AWRS will only be given is the business is up-to-date with all its tax compliance and Company House filing. New traders must apply to join the AWRS at least 45 days before they start to sell alcohol.

In my view this is even more bureaucracy being brought in by the Government but that is why you need a good Accountant to assist you.

As your local Accountant, I would be very glad to meet you and discuss the possibility of tax planning in your business. For more information, please see page two of this month’s Dartford Living and feel free to call me on 01322 278188 to arrange a meeting without charge.

Dartford Sharks Basketball Club Medway League Winners

October 2015 - Allow me to set the scene for you.

The Dartford Sharks gear up for their opening game of the season at home in the Shark Tank. Our valiant gladiators strapped up their sandals (or whatever the basketball equivalent is, trainers I guess?) and stared down the rest of the Medway League before going to battle. Fear trickled down the leg of the opposition as an ambitious Dartford team took to the court bellowing, “I AM SHARKTICUS!”

Ok, I may be mixing up gladiator films in this metaphor, but don’t let that cloud the image I’m painting - this was a strong team with their sights set on the Medway League title. There had been some personnel change over the summer, with players promoted from the Dartford Sharks second team, and a couple of new additions that had established this team as one of the favourites going into the season. The music had changed from tense and atmospheric, to quick and determined. Things were getting serious.

The Dartford Sharks season went just like any great gladiator movie. After the opening 10 minutes establishing just how badass the protagonist is, there comes a hurdle that must be overcome. The Sharks faced frustrations early in the season, opening with a couple of tough losses, playing a style of basketball dictated to them by the other team. They were ruled by their emotions and they couldn’t see through the red mist to the greater goal. It was a bloody start for a team once bound for glory.

Then came the mid-point epiphany; a divination from on-high, where our heroes conquer their demons. Focus was reset with an emphasis on team-basketball. This was not a league to be won with a series of 1-on-1 battles - it’s 5-on-5. Every member of the squad was contributing, with a different name at the top of the scorers list every night. The team’s new additions stepped up and made key contributions

with their unselfish play, and the bench unit provided a consistency of effort that only comes with a team-first mentality.

A win streak put the Dartford Sharks right back into the title race, and they were not prepared to look back at what was, only forward to the greatness that awaited them. As the season continued, losses from earlier in the season were avenged, and old scores with bitter rivals were settled for another year.

Each win this season was hard-fought. There were a number of tough games against formidable adversaries, notably Gravesend’s Guru Nanak and last season’s champions, the Wizards. Every point was punishing, and every assist arduous, but these persistent pugilists scrapped and hustled for every last one.

All this brings us to March 2016, and once more, allow me to set the scene. Having fought to the bitter end, the Dartford Sharks stand once more in the Shark Tank, battered and bruised. As they stand over their final victims of the season, they look up to the crowd chanting their monika, raise their heads to the heavens and call out, “Are you not entertained? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?”. Seriously though, we cannot wait to defend this title next season, and to see which Hollywood movie narrative we can force upon it this time next year.

Anthony Joshua became IBF heavyweight boxing champion with a stunning second-round stoppage of American Charles Martin. It was hardly a contest, as the Olympic champion, in only his 16th professional fight, knocked down his opponent twice in the second round with two devastating right hands. Hopefully this is the start of a glorious era for British boxing, and particularly the heavyweight division.

On the same night last month, Manny Pacquiao beat Timothy Bradley by unanimous decision in what the Filipino says is the final fight of his career. Pacquiao, knocked down American Bradley, in the seventh and ninth rounds in the third welterweight meeting between the two. End of an era.

Who’s been at the theatre this month? There have been plenty of great shows to choose from! We sobbed over wartime romance Flare Path and boogied to Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Orchard; we rocked out with American Idiot and took a trip down memory lane with Tom the Musical at the Churchill. And there were more Strictly stars than you could shake a sequinned stick at…

And what’s coming up next? From 16th-21st May, suspect everyone with Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap; the West End’s longest-running play is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a tour to give audiences around the country a chance to find out whodunnit (a surprisingly well-kept secret considering how many people must have seen the show over the years).

If you enjoyed Puttin’ on the Ritz last year, you may want to check out That’s Entertainment at the Orchard from 24th-28th May. The song and dance spectacular includes a special guest appearance from Britain’s number 1 vocal harmony group, The Overtones, and features hits from the 1940s and 50s.

This month also sees the Orchard’s usual fantastic variety of one night only shows, from 80s Mania on the 6th to Puccini’s Tosca on the 7th and Menopause the Musical on the 11th. The All Star Stand Up Tour arrives in Dartford on 14th May, featuring Gary Delaney, Pete Firman, Jarred Christmas and Sean Hughes, and everyone’s favourite Scottish musical twins The Proclaimers are in town on the 22nd. And don’t miss Britain’s Got Talent champions Ashleigh and Pudsey on 29th and 30th May as they take on their arch nemesis Dr Feline in musical adventure,

Mission Impudseyble.

Ever thought about joining a choir but not sure where to start? Check out the Orchard Theatre Community Choir’s taster sessions on 16th and 23rd May at Holy Trinity Church. More details on the Orchard’s website.

A bit further afield, the Churchill in Bromley has a great month ahead if you enjoy a feel-good musical: they’ve got Hairspray from 3rd-7th May, and Legally Blonde from 24th-28th. And for something a bit different, visit Woodville Studio Theatre on 19th May for What Would Spock Do?, a new comedy about love and Star Trek fresh from a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival.

So much to look forward to! And with summer not far off, keep an eye out for the programme of outdoor events in Dartford, which is set to include performances from the brilliant Changeling Theatre. (If you haven’t seen them before, grab the chance; you won’t regret it.)
