The Hydraulic Program continues to gain strength through the partnership with Continental Australia and both companies are working hard to complete the product range and land the required stock to rollout the Hydraulic Program. Scott Lewis, Dave Leggett and I will be departing this month to inspect and hold meetings at the Continental Hydraulic Hose plant in China. It will be Dave’s first visit to China and hopefully I will have some good pics to share for the next Powell Pipeline edition. Powell Industrial has also entered into an agreement with the Polyhose group to be the exclusive distributor for Australia, New Zealand and Papa New Guinea. The Polyhose Group supplies Powell Industrial with product brand names such as Exitflex, Fluidcor and Polyhose. From Linda’s DeskShared Services

There has been much movement in the Shared Services department for Bayset Powell over the past 6 months. We have hired Akiko to assist with the growing demand for IT support services and we have had a moving of house as the marketing team, June and Katrina, relocate to more luxurious surroundings in Unit 2 at Coopers Plains. They have joined Angela and Akiko who already have established digs up there. Now all they need is some essential oils and a water feature and they will have their own spiritual retreat.

CPP Warehouse

The CPP warehouse has been a hive of activity and we have recruited additional staff to keep on top of the constant stream of containers that seem to be appearing on a daily basis. Damn purchasing. Stop spending money!!! Corrie has done an amazing job coordinating the unloading of the containers with limited resources and storage issues. Lewey also has been kept on his toes with all those sales coming through the CPP warehouse, additional Hydraulic products and stock takes. He is still with us so what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and he did an awesome job with the stock takes. He will have to start wearing his underpants on the outside. Isn’t that what Superman does!!!

This leaves the remainder of the team squeezedintotheUnit1“ChookPen”.OliviahasbeenpromotedtoHR/FinanceAssistantand we will be recruiting a receptionist in the next few weeks as her replacement. So we can squeeze one more into the “Chook Pen” Julie has emigrated to “Ex-Marketing Land” and the “Chook Pen” has had a complete redesign based on the Hen House Design skills of Lady Julie McCluck. I am not sure of the Feng Shui but time will tell. If they stop laying then we may have to rethink the design.

Work Safe at Powell

Having started as the Workplace Health and Safety and Compliance Coordinator in January, I can confidently claim bragging rights to say ‘I’ve been everywhere man’….

I have been very fortunate to have visited every Powell site, starting in Victoria in April and venturing to Western Australia, North Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales in May. I was accompanied on all of my trips (with the exception of WA) by Linda and we were dubbed “Kath and Kim” or “Thelma and Louise”. Regrettably, we did not come across Brad Pitt along the way. Just saying…

It was such a great opportunity to meet our staff, but also to get an idea of our operating environments, and the unique challenges that each site has, noting that some are more challenged than others. I am totally amazed at just how many applications there are for hoses. It may not be glamorous but it certainly is interesting!

To date, my primary focus has been to gain an understanding of the business and identify any compliance issues. I can report that I have found plenty to keep me busy. So often, in busy operating environments, safety can be pushed to the side. This is not a conscious decision or choice, but with so many conflicting priorities, the focus on safety can sometimes be lost along the way or never quite make it to the top of the list. I see my role as getting safety in the forefront of everyone’s minds and having it embedded as a non-negotiable in the way we conduct our routine tasks. So many factors come into how well we can achieve this – leadership, culture, accountability, understanding, training, having the right people with the right attitude and together, the desire to make a difference. I have come across many of you who have voiced your ideas and concerns and this demonstrates to me that we are all on the same page.

It is all of the little things we do together that can make the world of difference. While it may at times seem like a paperwork burden, there is no substitute for accurate and timely record keeping and documentation. We want to be pro-active rather than reactive and our primary driver to be the moral obligation we have to keep you all safe and well (at the same time, achieving legislative

compliance). My focus is on implementing processes so that everyone knows what they are responsible for, developing a range of training documents so that everyone is provided with the knowledge required and they can be held accountable for their actions or inaction and having a structured and systematic approach so we can see where we are going and measure how far we have come.

Thank you so much for your warm welcome and I look forward to your continued cooperation and involvement, not to mention your friendship and support.

Angela WeldonWorkplace, Health & Safety Co-Ordinator

We have a couple of projects in the pipe line for the CPP warehouse to help with the growth in the business and the challenges it has placed on the CPP warehouse.

1. Proposal to introduce Multi Locations into the CPP warehouse using Micronet and PDAs

2. Project Open Spaces (I do like to have silly names- so humour me) – review and change of the racking layout in Shed 1 toaccommodate an additional 200 pallet spaces.

3. Smarten up Initiative (another silly name) – we have employed the services of a logistic specialist to work with the CPP warehouse leadership team over the next 12 monthsto provide guidance and assistance with various projects and recommendations to improve the efficiency and safety of the CPP warehouse.

IT update

We will be migrating our servers over to a new platform in the next couple of months. What this means for many of you is new thin clients or terminals will replace old PCs. We will send these terminals out to each branch with instructions on what they are replacing and what to do with the old machines closer to the changeover. You will also connect to the servers using a Remote Desktop Application rather than a Citrix Client. Besides that you should not notice too much difference.

I will also be rolling out a unified wireless network for all the Bayset and Powell branches in the next couple of months. This means that all branches will have access to the network wirelessly as well as the current WAN ports. Once you connect to one Bayset Powell wireless access point at one site you can automatically connect to a wireless access point at any of the other sites as soon as you are within range.

Around the Branches

An interesting year we have had here in Mackay. We have seen the departure of Marty “The Fat Kid” Leonard, The unwelcome visit of a lady by the name of Debbie who brought a bit of wind and rain with here and the arrival of Wes Carlton back on his old stomping ground to expand our customer base and introduce us to the hydraulic side of the business. (Also known as Wes’s World).

Mackay market place has been in a lull for the last few years due to the downturn of the mining industry. With Powell importing product it gives us a opportunity to be more then competitive in both the open cut and underground market. Time to give our opposition a bit of a shake-up. With the experience, knowledge and customer contacts of both Wes and Darrin S in the region we will have a nice foot in the door with some of the larger hydraulic customers.

The challenge ahead for both Shane and I is to juggle the warehouse around to accommodate all the additional product we will be stocking as well as working out how to crimp and fit hydraulic hoses. I am confident that as a Team we can out grow our current location and move into a larger shed suitable for our business model.

Eddie jacksonBranch Manager - Mackay

MackaySydney has been extremely busy in the last 6 months – it has been a very successful time with plenty of man hours put in. We have also had during this time 5 containers (Including the first Powell EXITFLEX container which is in most parts already sold) with the Sydney Tunnel Projects running at a rate of knots. Weareconstantlybuildingandsupplying1”and 2” Air Hose Kits which we will continue to do in the coming months as more hose arrives. The VAC waste market is also kicking on for us with daily Kanamax, Bumble Bee and Tiger Tail going straight out the door. The coming few months will see us expand the Warehouse yet again and make some significant changes to house our incoming Hydraulic Hose & Fittings range, with plenty of orders coming in to fulfil. Following a visit to New Zealand in March, with Darrin and me, we now have a key distributor on board across the ditch and are supplying monthly stock orders. We will continue to work closely with them and expand our market share. The last 6 months has also seen some regular staff members move on from Powell and we are currently re-building the team, which will see us move up another gear into our growth phase. Very exciting times for Powell Industrial in Sydney and NSW.

The Hire Show was a very successful 2 days. Paul Holmes and I spent Tuesday afternoon getting organised and prepared, making the stand look top notch for Wednesday. We had some good foot traffic both days and have obtained some good leads. Also managing to sell some Layflat Kits to a now new customer who was set up across from our stand. Following the show we have had some sizeable quotes go out on the Sanitation Range, Composite Hose, Pressure Washer Assemblies and also a New Hire Company (ITF Hire come and see us to purchase some Tiger Tail and Fittings).

Key Highlights from the 2 days were our very own Don McDonald dropping by to work some magic on the stand, and also watching Paul Holmes trying to convince a potential client to buy Toilet Drops – samples were taken and a bottle of water but this lead is pending.

NAHAD’s 33rd Annual Meeting and Convention returned to the great state of Texas for the first time since 1999 inApril. The state known for the extra-large size in all what they do. The NAHAD Convention was attended by more than 900 guests, giving us the opportunity to meet and greet with guests from all around the world; including Ireland, New Zealand, China, USA and even some from Canada and Alaska. The four-day event included presentations by astronaut Captain Mark Kelly and dynamic human behaviourist, Ross Shafer. Educational components included a panel discussion around the topic of Navigating the Seas of Disruption, the latest study of ‘Facing the Forces of Change’ produced by NAW in conjunction with IBM, as well as the popular UID-in-a-Day sessions on current business topics. The convention provided plenty of networking opportunities and we were able to put a name to the face of many Powell Industrial suppliers. The Showcase of Hose Solutions contained a record-breaking 170booths with a wide display of hose and fittings products, as well as service providers for the industry.

NAHAD Annual Meeting & Convention 2017

Scott Lewis’s Highlights:

• Seeing our suppliers showcase their new products

• Meet and greet with other people in the hose industry

• The hose business in the USA is huge by the volume they talk about we are only able to dream about

Wow, it’s hard to believe we’re already half way through the year and haven’t we been busy.

We’ve recently reviewed our induction process and made some slight changes as well as introduced additional materials to assist our new starters with understanding and learning about our Company. Some of these changes include:

•Introduction of an EmployeeOrientationHandbook. This handbook has been developed to provide new employees with key information about the Company and our culture as well as provide them with information about their employment that they can refer to in their own time as they settle in. If you would like a copy, you can access this handbook from the O Drive in the folder titled “Induction Material”.

•IntroductionofanInductionChecklistAll supervisors / managers will be sent aninduction checklist along with the new starters employment paperwork. The checklist includes a list of topics and paperwork to discuss and complete with new employee’s before they get started in their new role.

The purpose of this is to ensure the employee receives all the information and completes the necessary paperwork about their new role with the Company.

•OnlinePoliciesandProceduresInductionThe previous Workplace Induction Handbook which explained our Company Policies and Procedures has moved to an online method. New starters will now receive an email link to complete this. You can access copies of Powell Industrial’s Policies and Procedures at any time on the O Drive in the folder titled “Policies and Procedures”.

If you have any questions, feedback or suggestions in relation to this, please don’t hesitate to call me on (07) 3722 3746 oremail me at [email protected].

Tim will also be joined by fellow teammates Robert Bell, Scott Boyde, and Hugh Pembroke (Adrian’s son).

“It’s going to be awesome to go on tour and I’m really looking forward to doing it with some of my best mates.”

Not only is he heading to Europe…Tim recently was a member of the Australian squad that finished fourth at the Junior World Cup last year!

Congratulations to Brendan Saul and his wife Melanie. They welcomed their son Evander JohnMichaelSaul into their familyon29-05-17at4:41pmweighing8lbs6oz.

Angela and I (Kath & Kim) did a whistle stop tour of the branches in the name of Health & Safety during April and May. I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with you all. Though honestly that Kimmy can be a bit of a Bogan at times. I just was so embarrassment I didn’t know where to look. I lost count of the times I had to chastise her. “Kimmy, look at moy!” just wasn’t working.

Anyway I ditched her for Kel (Darren Fillian) on my next branch excursion to Hobart. He has so much more class!!! We braved the fierce cold of the Hobart winter to annoy the Hobart branch during stock take. Nothing

like a crisp Derwent Park morning to put a spring in your step. Darren and I had our coping strategies. Mine was Coffee and his was Mother and Ice. Seriously who needs ice in the middle of a Hobart winter. Only that weirdo Kel. Just too classy for words.

On a side note I have just completed my Yoga Teacher Training so next time I visit I might set aside some time to take you through a couple of Sun Salutations and some standing splits. Nothing like some Boga (Bogan Yoga) from Kath to “froy up the body and refresh the moind”.

Well that’s all from my end of town. I think I will finish this update with some words of wisdom from the ethereal Kath.

Let’shavearipperFY2018.IknowIwillbeflat out like a lizard drinkin’. Hope to catch yaz next time for a Barbie and it’s your shout.
