Dear Darling Reader, Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo, Boggle, Balderdash and more Monopoly. There’s nothing like a cold London Christmas to push one to the extreme limits of family fun, that strange twilight zone where love and laughter turn to tears and tantrums, and the calm, collected adult in you suddenly finds herself quivering in inexplicable rage as your alien twelve-year-old gleefully remortgages your hard-won hotels andhouses on Piccadilly, Coventry Street and Leicester Square.

Which got us thinking about the madness and mayhem of family life, and the fine art of keeping your head and soul together while all about you are losing their trainers, their Pritt Sticks, their boyfriends and their irritatingly tiny little minds. For cover girl Gina Conway, super-mum and award-winning entrepreneur, the art of business success is about managing her staff like an extended family. Our inspiring woman, Christine Phizackerley, masterfully juggles her roles as corporate wife, mother of four and local hedgehog heroine. Philippa Hennessy interviews three local mums with broods of five or more, while Natalie Bauer gets superstar, Annick Gorman of L.K. Bennett to spill the creative beans.

When you need to put back what life and the kids take out of you, rehab and redemption are close at hand. Treat yourself at Gina’s Aveda salon, restore your balance with Alessandro’s Chi Gong, get into “Hot Yoga” at Wimbledon’s only Bikram centre, calm your sneezing with Maria’s unique hayfever remedies, or reward your senses with Ghigo’s sensational new Tuscan treats at San Lorenzo. If all else fails get a DIY divorce from Hart Brown, start afresh with a renovation with Jason the Builder and a Janeplan diet delivered to your door, or plan for a kid-free future by investing in the market with Equity Invest.

Lots of look forward to, lots to forget. Here’s wishing a wonderful 2011 to all of you.

inspiring woman

CHRISTINE PHIZACKERLEY is our Inspiring Woman of Wimbledon

How would you describe yourself ?

I’m a fairly normal housewife with kids and a busy husband and all the chaos that goes with it. I was born and bred in Zimbabwe on a farm in the middle of nowhere and came to England after marrying an Englishman. We settled in Wimbledon because John’s sister lived and worked here. She was one of the first female partners at Price Waterhouse at the time. Our rented bedsit had no heating and that first winter it was so cold that the loo iced over! I worked hours of overtime trying to earn enough to go home to warm Africa.

You are the South London Hedgehog Rescue Representative. How many hedgehogs have you saved?

Many! (Chris laughs)… I’ve also lost a few. It never gets easier to tell a ten year old that her pet has passed on … they just don’t understand that rotten, broken limbs are hard to heal. John despairs! Every time he passes the children’s art room it’s filled with a variety of small creatures on heating pads being fed chopped up worms.

What is a typical weekend for you?

Like most families our weekends are manic! Most revolve around the kids’ sports really. The two older children play matches for school on Saturday. On Sundays, the girls play hockey for Wimbledon Club and my son plays rugby for the Wimbledon Mini’s on Barham Road. It sometimes feels as if there’s no time left between galas and hockey/rugby matches to do anything other than look at each other panting! The only rule is that we have a family roast every Sunday after rugby.

What do you love about Wimbledon over winter?

I love Wimbledon in the winter, especially when it snows! We get the baking trays out and slide down Teletubby Hill (opposite the Windmill car park on the Common). I keep meaning to buy proper sledges but, by the time I remember, they’re either sold out or the snow’s gone! There are lots of lovely places to go out to locally too. I enjoy meeting friends for tea at Jacob’s on the Ridgway – they do great homemade cakes and lunches. My other favourite at

the moment is The Light Café where they happily took on 12 eight-year-olds at very short notice for lunch in the middle of the day when my oven had broken down. Another absolute gem is All Seasons Grocery Store - it has one of absolutely everything you will ever need for the house; from pine nuts to candles, lightbulbs to bleach. If you need it – they’ve got it! And they are open until 9pm. As for Bayley and Sage – what’s not to love? Of course, Elys is a firm

favourite, it’s like Wimbledon’s own Peter Jones. It’s a great all-round department store.

What would you like to see in Wimbledon that doesn’t exist?

None of the men in my family are of the slight “Italian Model” type build – they’re

all strapping ex-rugby players continuing to be “strong” in other ways! They all like their food and it’s impossible for them to find clothes to fit in Wimbledon. It would be great to have a shop that sells good quality clothing for men over six foot tall and with a muscle or two.

Who are your inspirations?

Writer, Maya Angelou, whose books I love. I began to read her books when life was tough and I was very buoyed up by her pugnacious determination to float. I also admire Aung San Suu Kyi who is such a survivor and inspiration.

Anything left on your ‘To Do’ list?

Well, after my first child I did the Wimbledon Half Marathon. After the second child I did the Wimbledon Half Marathon and then after the twins… hmmm. It’s been eight years so far. There’s an irritating tapping on my shoulder that I need to complete the circle. Damn!

Superb riding over Wimbledon Common & Richmond Park. Expert, friendly tuition in private or small group lessons. Special short courses for all standards. Come along to our next New Rider Open Morning. For more details visit: wvstables.com or call: 020 8946 8579

T he Village is at heart of the Wimbledon community. Is this

where it all started for L.K.Bennett?

Absolutely! Linda Bennett opened her first store in Wimbledon Village in 1990 selling shoes and accessories, in the same location as it is today and twenty-one years on there are now over 120 L.K.Bennett stores worldwide.

The launch of the ‘Life is the Occasion’ campaign has been a great success. Who will be the next face of L.K.Bennett?

Well, the L.K.Bennett woman is glamorous, sophisticated, feminine and modern and the

Nathalie Baur’s exclusive interview withL.K.Bennett’s creative director Annick Gorman

glamorous and modern – I wanted to show that killer heels and sexy dresses can be sophisticated and refined, defining the modern working woman who wants to be strong and confident.

What advice would you give to women for achieving and sustaining a successful career?

To have a clear vision and to follow through with it. Stand tall, be confident and strong, and fight for what you believe in. I think this will get you anywhere you want to be. Be afraid of nothing, and see obstacles as challenges. Frank A. Clark said “If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” Can you relate to this? I couldn’t imagine a life without obstacles. It has defined who I am, the people I know, and what I do. Obstacles make my life exciting. When I landed the number 2 position as Head Designer of Esprit in San Francisco, one of the biggest fashion houses during the 80’s, I was away from everything I had ever

Wimbledon ladies certainly fall into this category. For this season we held open castings and received an overwhelming response. There were so many inspirational women with unique style it was difficult to choose only four. After a nationwide casting, four fabulous new L.K.Bennett ambassadors were selected: Ade (26, banking compliance analyst), Chandrima (41, consultant obstetrician), Helen (51, business woman & mother of eight) and Victoria (29, textile designer).

You came onboard in 2007 with a huge challenge: re-branding the company. What was your vision?

My main challenge and mission was to build on the brand’s identity, creating highly desirable products. I saw huge potential in L.K.Bennett to become an icon of British style with Parisian flair. I’ve always sensed that here the style was both very conservative and classic, or on the other end of the spectrum, crazy and eccentric. I saw an opportunity to position L.K.Bennett as something in between: elegant, yet

been familiar with. I was in China for four months a year, had a newborn child and spoke terrible English. Moreover, nobody had warned me about earthquakes. Yet, my life was so exciting and enriched. I witnessed a whole different culture in fashion and lifestyle, which greatly influenced my vision. I wish that every woman would follow her dream whatever it may be and see challenges as an opportunity to grow as a person.

My clients often ask for tips on putting together a casual chic look. What is your secret for a glamorous look in a casual setting?

Simplicity - but attitude also plays a very important part in maintaining your look. A

woman in a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers can be just as chic as one in a dress and high heels. It all depends on how she wears it, her attitude, her confidence and poise. I often say everything a lady does should be done with style. I always find that women are at their best and most feminine when they are themselves: minimal makeup, neutral colours that define their personality, and nothing too extravagant. Being casual is about fitting in, while still being distinguished and refined.

Posh Spice has three (with another on the way), Katie Price wants

to add to her brood of three, as does Kerry Katona, who already has four. Thanks to adoption, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie have nine between them and showing no signs of stopping. With

celebrities breaking the two-kid barrier, big families seem as trendy as jumbo-sized sunglasses and handbags – and it’s not just A-listers in Hollywood and E-Sussex that are going super-sized, but regular families too - on our doorstep. Intrigued to discover what it is that compels women

to keep procreating, I spoke to three mothers, who in my eyes, are all deserving of an accolade.

family

Rebecca Ferry, Age 33Mother to Beatrice (7), Tom (5), Alice (4), Ed (2) and Iris (9 months)

Rebecca starts her day with a run before the children wake at about 6.30am. “Then,” she tells me, “pandemonium sets in with the normal rush to get dressed, have breakfast and the school run. I find meal times the most chaotic and relish wine o’clock, when homework is finished and the kids are bathed and in bed.” With an adoring nanny to help out, Rebecca is able to have some ‘me time,’ when she normally reclines to her study to catch up on admin. She admits that there are many challenges with having five children, such as sleep deprivation and juggling their different needs. I find it incredible that she manages to remain on an even keel. She says, “I’m generally an unruffled type of person and unfazed by most things. I’m also very fortunate to have had easy pregnancies (but marathon labours). The positives far outweigh the times when I’m mopping up vomit at 2 am and changing several sets of bedding simultaneously. I love having a large family, despite the volume of laundry and mess that comes with it,” she smiles.

Micky Wolff, Age 41Mother to Lilly (10), Charlie (8), Molly (5), Freddie (3) and Willow (12 weeks)

Depicting the model mum, Micky is the sort of woman that many aspire to be like – relaxed and seemingly totally in control. Alongside the overwhelming logistics that go hand in hand with running a busy household, bursting at the seams with

children, Micky, a trained dancer and professional choreographer, runs the Stagecoach Theatre Arts School in Battersea. She describes a typical afternoon during the week: “So far, I’ve taken the children swimming, coloured a Pharaoh, learned a poem, discovered what limpets eat and how puffins adapt to their habitat, found a pair of football boots and prepared the supper. At bathtime, there was a meltdown over whether Noah’s Ark was real or not, a debate about what would happen if we were disobedient in God’s perfect world and Molly wanted to know how babies get into Mummy’s tummy. Pepper Pig provided welcome relief, before calling time and packing them off to bed. A stack of laundry tackled, emails read, glass of wine poured, packed lunches prepared, and finally, order is restored. At times, I feel I’m drowning. But the laughter, love and happiness that fills our home, more than makes up for any momentary loss of humour.”

Kate Greenhalgh, Age 47 Mother to Lizzie (21), Imogen (20), Hermione (14), Jacob (12), Jemima (10)

Kate, Darling’s Points of View columnist, says, “People often ask me if having five children is stressful and expensive, placing unbearable strain on the parents, producing untold amounts of sibling rivalry and a regular meltdown of reasonable discipline, as well as logistical headaches over family arrangements and travel. To these people, I just say, yup! What they don’t realise is that having lots of children was not some proud gesture of fecundity and prodigious maternal abilities; it just happened that way. “You were all accidents!” I tell them when they fight over who is The Favourite. But bless, I wouldn’t have it any other way and as the children point out, there is always somebody in the house who is not cross with you. As they grow older, I see a sort of eccentric tribal identity to the family emerging, which is not just fun to be part of, but creates an amazing sense of belonging. When each of them was born, I grew a whole new heart – and metaphor or not, that’s the truth.”

Football legend and globetrotter Rodney Marsh has the ears of the media and the world at his feet. But he chose to launch his

controversial autobiography, “Loose Cannon”, right here on our proverbial doorstep.

Rodney Marsh Lets Loose at Hemmingways

Local Hero

“When I was recently asked why I have enjoyed having a home in Wimbledon Village for over thirty years the answer was simple, it's unique! The village has a soul and a spirit like no other. It has a history that is entrenched in the fabric of the local community from the Common to Cannizaro Park to the original horse stables and of course the summer tennis when for a couple of weeks stars from all walks of life and from all over the world descend on our tiny hamlet.

“In short, even though these days I spend most of my time in the USA, it is home.” Rodney started his football career as a youth player at West Ham and went on to play for Queens Park Rangers, Manchester City, Fulham and England. In1976 he headed to America and played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the North American Soccer League.

As a fellow Wimbledon suburbanite, I was saddened to learn of the death of Elisabeth Beresford (aged 84), prolific author and

creator of the illustrious Wombles. As a Womble wooer, I feel strangely attached to these quirky inhabitants of Wimbledon Common.

Elisabeth's story is an animating one. In the mid-60s she was a struggling author. But, her fate soon changed. One Boxing Day outing to the common, her daughter scampered up to her saying: “Isn’t it great on Wombledon Common?” And that was that - the fictional creatures were born. Several years on, the first series of The Wombles was published. Each Womble was based on a different family member. Heading the hierarchy, was the highbrow Great Uncle Bulgaria, influenced by Elisabeth's father-in-law. Tobermory was based on her inventor brother, and Orinoco, on her son, while Madame Cholet Coburg-Womble was inspired by her royalist mother. Impressing the BBC with designs by the puppeteer, Ivor Wood, who gave the the creatures long pointed snouts, thick prehensile fingers and ill-fitting costumes and headgear, The Wombles was commissioned in 1973. With its environmental message, the Wombles' mission was to keep Wimbledon Common tidy by recycling, or, in their words, “making good use of bad rubbish.” The series was years ahead of its time.

In an attempt to hand down my 'wombling' ways to my children, I vow to continue playing hunt the burrow when we venture out onto the common. However, I sense that 8 year old doesn't share my sentiments and I suspect it won't be long until my younger two children also realise that there is actually no burrow to be found. But, maybe the real problem lies with me – once I accept that the bespectacled Bulgaria and the dread-locked cockney Stepney were never really burrowing around underground, a part of my childhood will be gone forever.

San Lorenzo’s new Tuscan free-style, small eats menu hits the spot with rustic charm and affordability by Ghigo Berni

Returning to his roots with Spuntini dell’Osteria, Ghigo Berni

has created a fab new restaurant within a restaurant with a back-to-basics vibe for a food-loving twitter generation.

“When San Lorenzo opened in 1963 in Beauchamp Place, it was baptized as Osteria San Lorenzo. A rustic little tavern with whitewashed brick walls, pine tables, old rectory chairs and a welsh dresser. Within months it was on its way to being at the epicentre of London’s cultural mélange. From the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Twiggy, Peter Sellers, Lord Snowdon and Princess Margaret, to Pelé and Jack Nicholson, it catered to an international cast of creatives for the next 50 years. Lorenzo himself says that the only one who never came was Marlon Brando!

SPUNTINI!

“How could such humble beginnings have produced almost 50 years of incredible success? Well, an Osteria is a place where the emphasis is generally on maintaining a steady clientele rather than on haute cuisine, one where the owner hosts people. The secret’s in there, somewhere. San Lorenzo in SW19 simply extended a concept which lost some currency with the resurgence of haute cuisine and competitive franchises. Yet it mustn’t be forgotten that San Lorenzo originally led the way with a particular brand of rustic Italian cuisine which I firmly believe is on the way back.

“That’s why I’ve decided to cater to a more inquisitive, experimental neighbourhood mentality by introducing Spuntini dell’Osteria. San Lorenzo effectively becomes two restaurants in one, offering a ‘Classico’ menu at the rear for loyal customers. At the front there’s now a much more relaxed decor. It's open all day with a humble array of small dishes bursting with energetic flavours, rustic elegance and very modest prices.

“It resurrects the original romantic dream of looking after friends and loyal customers. A place where there’s life, and a youthful sense of shared ownership in discovery and delight.

“Like Obelix, I fell into the San Lorenzo cauldron as a child. It defined where I wanted to be....hosting a place where food is central, yet incidental to an overall experience. And that, my friends, is an Osteria.”

GINA CONWAY - BODY AND SOULAward winning Gina Conway and the art of nurturing a great business

I am the mum of three amazing young children”, says Gina, “They are the

youngest members of my family of eighty-nine - my wonderful team who make my salons and spas run. They breathe life into my dreams and I aim to nurture them and give them the opportunity to become successful individuals and realize their own dreams. That’s what mother’s do. It’s a big ask. Why do I think I can do this? Because I have a great mum. My mum taught me the importance of making the world a better place – warmer, sunnier, more hopeful than I found it. She started with the basics: Don’t litter. Remember the golden rule. Share your love, because it is unlimited and free. Smile at strangers

and appreciate the good in all. Believe in karma, you reap what you sow, you get what you give. My father died at an early age. I quickly learned that you need to make the most of every day because today may be your last. You can’t do yesterday over again. Make sure you always do your best. Life lessons. We all have them, thankfully. It’s not until you get a little older that you realize the impact they have on who you are. My business reflects some of the same simple principles I learned as a child. I aim to create an environment based on love, environmental responsibility, generosity and quality. This year we are up for two top awards for “salon of the year” in two of our London locations. I am not

sure I will get the mum of the year prize as I spend so much time at work, but the time I do have with my own children is so precious. I get the best of them and they get the best of me. I am still learning lessons now and thanks to my extended salon family, I hopefully make a better mum for knowing them.”

Gina is owner of several Gina Conway Aveda Salons and Spas, one of which is a gem on our own Wimbledon Broadway.

When Jane founded JanePlan she wanted to offer a unique

and highly personalized service. JanePlan designs a diet plan for each and every client, creates the diet and then delivers it to the door. Featured regularly in the national press, JanePlan has been praised for its excellent value for money and superb standards of client service.

Jane has some great advice: “Most of us have a very good idea about what type of food is healthy. However, we seem to have less of an idea about understanding how much we should eat. Detoxing our surroundings can help control how much we eat.

“The old saying ‘see food and eat it’ is really true. We eat with our eyes not our stomachs and therefore if your favourite foods are visible you are more likely to eat them. So, detox your kitchen

by hiding away tempting treats. Move your M & S crudités to the front of the fridge, so they are the first thing you see when you open the door. If you have a love affair with the bread bin, don’t keep bread in the house, if you’re more of a biscuit person, ban them from your shopping bag. Keep your fruit bowl full and fresh and make sure you have plenty of healthy snacks to hand for those hungry moments. Remember, out of site out of mind.

“If your real moment of weakness is children’s tea time, move the bin next to the table and throw the leftovers away AS SOON AS the children have finished. Better in the bin than in your tummy!

“If you’d like to discuss how to eat more healthily, the team at JanePlan is always on hand. We can even work out your metabolic rate for you and tell you exactly how much you should be eating. Our highly acclaimed diet delivery service is available throughout SW19 and 20”

What is SBT?It is really an invitation for you to realign yourself with your potential. In our materialistic society, we forget that beauty starts from within. Our wrinkles, grey hair etc. are a result of inner tensions, unresolved issues, not taking the time to connect within. I work on the energy levels of my clients, no hands on, but guiding you with very deep information about your patterns of behaviours and how they affect you. I draw your chakras and your Guides. This is so powerful, that I have seen my clients shift so much that, yes, they look younger, brighter, lighter. That’s inner beauty shinning through! You leave your session feeling reconnected to yourself, your

vision, ideals, dreams, empowered, focused, realigned, energised, lighter, as if you really physically shed weight. Where does this work come from?I have always been connected to deep levels of intuition and guidance. Four years ago I was bedridden with M.E. I started really shifting my consciousness. I actually cured myself in 3 days after being crippled for one year. I used my mind over matter! This was such a powerful experience that it changed the course of my life. I was lucky to find someone who explained to me that I was clairvoyant and she encouraged me to use my gifts. This is concrete work. I am guided to look energetically at all levels of concerns of my clients: Health, wealth, relationships, career, grief, childhood imprints,

hidden or forgotten talents. You leave with a CD of the session and the drawings. The after effects are very tangible too. I receive many heart warming and sometimes truly amazing accounts of experiences that happen as the person carries on with the flow that started as a SBT session! [email protected] 878 8591

relaxing ourselves into a natural and tranquil state, when our body and mind regain their original harmony with the universe. It originated in China several thousand years ago.

How did you learn about Chi Gong?I came across it over 20 years ago when I attended a weekend with Zhixing Wang (founder of the Hua Gong style). I felt there had to be more to life than my job, my home and my friends. I was searching for something and the weekend opened up a whole new world to me. I felt clearly the Chi or energy around me and in my body and wanted to look deeper into it.

How do you feel you have benefited by the practice?I noticed over time that I coped better with difficult situations at work. Emotionally I felt stronger and did not take setbacks so personally. Seeing and understanding “the big picture” made me more relaxed. Part of the teaching is integrating some of these ancient principles into daily life. For example “struggle less and achieve more” can save us a lot of energy and time. I

have been studying with Zhixing and teaching classes in London and Hove for over 10 years and I am one of six qualified teachers of Hua Gong in London.

Chi Gong can: *improve your health *relieve stress *relax your body and mind *make you feel rejuvenated

When we connect to the universal Chi (or Qi) through the practice, we feel empowered, blessed and protected.

What is Hua Gong? The Hua Gong style of Chi Gong is artistic, and gentle. It includes simple energetic body movements and meditation. It is simple enough for beginners to learn and sophisticated enough for advanced practitioners to study.

What happens in the classes?During the practice and meditation part (standing or sitting) we learn special techniques to connect with the Chi. The process of relaxing ourselves into a natural and tranquil state when our body and mind undergo a natural readjustment to regain their original harmony with the universe. We also learn effective

ways of cleansing, grounding and recharging our energy and practical, simple techniques for improving digestion, sleeping and coping with stress.

In the next issue we will look at how to understand the nature of our emotions. How to avoid being affected negatively by them and how we can transform these emotions into positive strength and energy and how we can turn our emotions into a source of creativity. By learning from our emotional experience through the practice of Chi Gong, we can obtain more inspiration and clarity in our lives.

She started a double Bikram Yoga 30-day challenge in January 2010, determined to conquer being “overweight, divorced, out of work, and in debt.”

By day 60, she said “I feel calm and satisfied, and certain that I now have a refuge, a resource, a blueprint for health.” Not only this but she had also lost a stone in weight and dropped five inches from her waist. Her Body Mass Index had fallen 7% points, and she had stopped taking antidepressants for the first time in years. Her life had well and truly been made-over by Bikram Choudhury.

If you too would like to transform your life, even in a smaller way, why not try the 30-

day challenge at the new Bikram Yoga Studio in Wimbledon?

Newly opened, the studio can be found at 7 Elm Grove, Wimbledon, SW19 4HET: 07767 810149 bikramyogawimbledon.com

Classes are 10am and 6pm, 7.15 /8pm weekdays – 10 and 12am, 3 and 5pm weekends. Special introductory offer: 10 days for £15.

HOT YOGA INWIMBLEDON

“It’s never too late, you’re never too bad, too old, too sick to start from scratch and begin again.”

Bikram Yoga is a world-wide practice of 26 Hatha postures and 2 breathing exercises, performed in a studio heated to 40 degrees. It is proven to be a successful way to detox and restore health.

The name Paige Williams probably means nothing to most of us, but her story is an inspiring one. She was a depressed housewife living in America, who became famed for transforming her life through ‘hot yoga’ on the Oprah Show.

NEW HEAD JOINS THE STUDY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

New head, Mrs Susan Pepper, has replaced Mrs Joyce Nicol who is to retire after eight happy years at The Study Prep. A long standing Wimbledon resident, Mrs Pepper was educated at Godolphin & Latymer, going on to read History at Somerville

College, Oxford. She held the post of Deputy Head of Francis Holland School for 10 years and started her new post this term.

“I am thrilled to be joining The Study Preparatory School,” says Mrs. Pepper, “And have long admired the school’s excellent reputation as a leader in educating young girls, with admirable academic attainment, musical and artistic endeavour, sporting achievement and the ability to nurture wellrounded, confident and happy girls. I plan to build on The Study’s huge strengths and bring my own vision and experience to enhance every aspect of this wonderful school.”

SANTA AT CENTRE COURT

The grotto raised a staggering £8,905 for the Centre’s nominated charity, Merton Music Foundation, thanks to the generosity of mums and dads paying a small fee for the privilege of letting their little ones meet Santa at Centre Court Shopping Centre over Christmas.

a homeopaths view, hay fever is therefore a complaint that needs careful consideration and diligence.

Your homeopath will take into account many different factors such as your previous medical history, family inheritance and personal preferences and dislikes, all of which add up to a complete picture of you and your complaint. At the end of the consultation, your homeopath will let you have your remedies and ask you to phone in after 7 days to report on progress. At this point adjustments to the dosage or a change of remedies may be appropriate, all of which are included in the original fee. Please do not delay, as now is the perfect time to prepare your body for the beautiful season of spring. Homeopathy may help you enjoy it at last.

Are you one of the millions of Britons who suffer from hay fever? If

you are, this year is the time to try homeopathy to get through the season. Homeopathy may offer you relief from sneezing, itching and watering and help you enjoy spring and summer at last. Adolescents are particularly affected during their exam times. Numerous exam failures or poor results may be due to drowsiness from medications and constant hay fever symptoms distracting a youngster from studying and disturbing their concentration during examinations. Why not try homeopathy to relieve the symptoms without causing unwelcome side effects?

With homeopathy, all you have to do is take little sugar tablets (homeopathic remedies) or liquid drops several times per day. The remedies are made from natural substances such as highly diluted plant extracts and mineral compounds. The aim of homeopathic remedies is to give you relief from acute symptoms and to help reduce the tendency to have hay fever in the first place. Because homeopathy is a holistic therapy, it is absolutely essential to consult a professional who has been trained to assess your problem from a holistic angle. Over the counter homeopathic remedies often fail for hay fever, because they are too general and have not been individually prescribed to fit just you as a unique person. Hay fever is a chronic complaint of atopic nature. This means it is related to a family of complaints such as asthma and eczema which have an improper inflammatory response at their base. From

January and February are often the busiest months for a family lawyer. With

Christmas over and the VAT increases to look forward to the last thing you want to be spending money on is a divorce. Here are our helpful tips on how to divorce on a budget.

1. Stay away from “internet divorce”Increasingly a number of clients end up paying to address problems caused by a seemingly cheap internet divorce. Divorce forms are freely available to download, meet with us to check them once completed.

2. Sort out your finances The internet may not make you aware that, although you are divorced, you still have financial claims against each other which can only be dismissed by the court. Therefore, an ex-spouse could come back years later! In November, one newspaper reported that a £56M lottery

winner had to pay his ex-wife £2M, 10 years after she had left him for another man.

3. Set a budget If you have a budget tell your solicitor, they will be able to advise how to keep the costs down. Ask them to bill you monthly or when the work reaches a certain amount.

4. Be proactiveIf your solicitor needs you to assist to progress your divorce, make it a priority so they don’t have to chase you. Ask if forms can be emailed to you to fill in electronically. When asked to supply documents, provide ordered and labelled photocopies. Handing your solicitor a bag of mixed paperwork is going to take time to sort!

5. Mediation or collaborationIn mediation, you and your partner can negotiate directly with the help of a mediator to sort out assets. An alternative is collaborative law where

you, your spouse and your solicitors all sit down together to work out an agreement.

6. Don’t get petty - think long termUsing solicitors to negotiate who gets the old sofa is not cost effective! At Hart Brown, we offer a fixed fee consultation relating to divorce, finances and children.

FAQ

Q: How much are the court fees?A: They are currently £340 to issue the petition and £45 to apply for the decree absolute.

Q: Where can I obtain free divorce forms?A: From the court website, www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk or these can be collected from County Courts.

Q: How long does a divorce take?A: It depends on a number of factors including whether you are sorting out finances,

whether your spouse is replying to documents promptly and how busy the court is. It takes months rather than weeks to complete a divorce.

Q: My spouse has committed adultery. Can I name the other person?A: Yes you can but it is only likely to inflame the situation and may end up increasing the time it takes to complete the divorce, as well as potentially increasing the costs.

Sadly, the kidney donation failed last year and her brother is now on dialysis,

but she hopes that this honest and sometimes challenging account will help other people on their journey; whether they have donated, are in the process of donating, are trying to decide whether to take the first step, or just want to know what it's all about.

With so many people on transplant waiting lists and so few organs available, the fact that it is possible for a person to donate one of their two kidneys, or even a portion of their liver to another person in need offers an incredible and life changing opportunity.

Very often the opportunity to donate will arise when a family member or close friend needs an organ. Even in the case of an altruistic donation, (when someone donates to a stranger) the impulse to donate often comes from seeing a loved one suffer, or indeed recover when they receive a much-needed organ. However, perhaps more impressively, some altruistic donations are now inspired by a simple desire to give something back to the world.

“The Wee, the Wound and the Worries”

Nine years after donating a kidney to her brother, local resident Pearl Howie has published a moving account of the joy and pain of her experience

In 2002, when Pearl donated her kidney, the only option was open surgery, but in recent years more and more kidney donations are being carried out through keyhole surgery. This is designed to reduce the trauma and recovery time and so has opened up the option to donate for many more.

In her book Pearl guides readers through her kidney donation journey; the decision to be tested as a donor, the pre-surgery tests, the surgery itself, her different attempts to manage pain after the operation, the common maladies she suffered afterwards (which she wished someone had warned her about) and her long term fitness.

Since donating the kidney Pearl has become more interested in health and fitness and now runs the website www.pearlescapes.co.uk. The website is dedicated to showcasing

the best ways she has found of healing physical injury, mental stress and emotional damage, and includes all kinds of therapies. Most importantly she tries all the treatments, spas, hotels and experiences herself so that readers know exactly what to expect from them all.

The book is now available online from Lulu.com and as a free downloadable eBook.

For many people the idea of moving money out of the bank and into

investments can be a frightening prospect. But what we’ve learned at Equity Invest is that when they fully understand how thoughtful investing in the open market can be of real benefit to both society and their personal wealth, it can be an exciting and rewarding transition.

Remember, when you leave your money in the bank it is effectively ‘dead’ or stagnant, at best. By contrast, the moment you invest your money it begins to empower the companies who provide the services and who manufacture the products we all need, while helping to employ so many of the people who rely on them for some form of paid work. Our economic system requires a constant flow of money in order to remain sustainable and provide the prosperity we all depend on for richer, more meaningful lives.

On 6th March nine fabulous supporters of The Victoria Foundation,

a charity based in Richmond, will be travelling half way around the world to Beijing to take part in a Great Wall fundraising challenge. The team will be walking or scrambling five to seven hours a day for five consecutive days on steep and uneven terrain on several sections of the Great

Wall. Through doing this they are aiming to raise an amazing £50,000 - 100% of which will provide medical support to those in need and help to improve many lives.

Two local girls Mandy Phillips and Nikki Short are team members and have been training hard over the last few months to prepare for the challenge. They have been training in Richmond Park and with less than five weeks to go Mandy and Nikki are increasing their training and will spend a two days walking for 6-7 hours a day on Boxhill. Both girls have quite different reasons for taking up this challenge.

I initially heard of the charity through Lorna Votier, the Development Director, about 2 years ago and I have been really impressed by the medical support and help that the charity offers to local people, so when I heard about helping to raise funds by walking the Great Wall of China I signed up immediately!’ said Nikki.

Mandy Phillips and Nikki Short are takingup The Great Wall Challenge

For Mandy it is in memory of her dear mother, ‘I am walking to raise funds through The Victoria Foundation to support the Centre for Rheumatology headed by Professor David Isenberg at University College Hospital, where my mum spent much of the last 2 years. Sadly she died in October 2010 but what a better way to honour her memory and help others fight the crippling disease that is Rheumatoid Arthritis.’

A recent visit to Prague put our own dear Wimbledon into humbling

perspective, I fear. I don’t just mean that it highlighted Wimbledon’s dearth of Baroque monasteries, Renaissance clock-towers and 14th century Gothic bridges, (although I’m sure that we have our equivalents, if we look hard enough. The magnificent revamp of Ely’s, with its notable pseudo-façade, is surely on a par with the 600-year construction of St Vitus’s cathedral.) It was the contrasting experiences of the good citizens which I felt showed us in an unflattering, disappointing light, and probably make us a sadly unsuitable twin-town candidate, despite our shared glory of having Tesco Expresses.

Ushered around by a charming and stoical survivor of Stalinism, it was clear that every corner of Prague’s beautiful, medieval streets commemorates some act of great courage, nobility and the highest disdain for oppression. In this square, a young student self-immolated in protest against Russian invasion, on this bridge a haplessly ethical priest was slung to his death, and from this coffee shop members of the Czech resistance to Hitler were dragged to torture and execution. Heroism and romance blazed from each bloodstained stone. As a life-member of the Bourgeoisie, I had rather mixed feelings recently about my

student daughters going on protests against tuition fee rises. (What placards did they wave? ‘Wimbledon Students Say No To The Cuts! Mummy Already Has Our Annual Ski Trip to Pay For!’?) I have even had blandly moderate debates with them about it, (although of course in my day it was easier for me to justify state subsidy of my degree, as Medieval Latin has so many obvious benefits for modern society, unlike today’s wishy-washy tertiary education.) But no denying, there’s so little to be iconoclastic about these days. The girls weren’t even kettled!

Prague’s defenestrations perhaps best sum up our different civic experiences. When have we ever been chucked out of windows by tyrants? There hasn’t been a single decent defenestration

in SW19, to my knowledge. My own protest group - the People’s Militant Front Against Unrestricted Parking On West Side Common has taken subversion to the extreme of sneaking out and placing unauthorised plastic cones on the grass verges in the early hours of the morning, but not one of us has been defenestrated or sent to a Gulag so far, despite this bold provocation of the fascist apparatchiks currently wallowing in ill-gotten power in the Kafkaesque bowels of Merton Civic Centre.

One can only conclude that in our decadently mature, democratic, stable and welfare-supported suburb, with a thriving middle class, it is time to rise up and rebel about something. Only then will Wimbledon be truly picturesque.
