In this time of social, economic and political change in Tanzania, we believe that now is the time to mobilise the youth to participate in these changes with the hope that they too can join others in shaping Tanzania for the

better.

This year’s conference is centred around the idea that entrepreneurship is a viable medium for change beyond the economic sphere. DARE to Change DAR will provoke our audience to think of how collective inn innovation can be utilised to alleviate the challenges faced in a

fast-growing city like Dar es Salaam. Through our panels, guest speakers and student pitches, we hope to expose the audience to start-ups, corporate directors and NGO leaders who are already pioneering

innovative solutions in a sustainable way.

‘DARE to Change DAR’ will be the first opportunity for the 11 11 DAREnterprisers student teams to re-tell their entrepreneurial jouney to the wider public, and to pitch their social business ideas to an audience that will include potential mentors and future investors.

We invite you all to join us in channelling the day’s inspiration into your own vision of a better Dar es Salaam, a better Africa and a better world.

We train small teams of volunteers to implement sophisticated and inn innovative development solutions in Dar es Salaam. Our vision is to create a model for other universities to follow so that students around the world can become instrumental in helping to take some of the best solutions in

international development to scale.

Changing the world begins with local changemakers. Empowered with the skills and knowledge to make sustainable differences, they can be a

powerful force for good.

At the heaAt the heart of CDI’s values is the belief that students can be the catalysts for change.

Chemolex aims to provide off-grid rural households with a clean, affordable home lighting system by harnessing and storing solar energy in rechargeable batteries, which is our unique selling point. We then collect the discharged batteries, which we recharge at our solar charging station, then distribute back to our agent kiosks using electric powered motor bikes.

A lack of access to reliable, affordable and eenvironmentally friendly energy for cooking in rural areas that are off the grid is a big problem. African Powering is a Tanzanian based company that focuses on providing best off-grid energy services in African rural areas by using modern biogas technologies. Our company will incentivise people to use biogas

MagProtein uses houseflies (Musca domestica) as the cell factory to produce maggots (larva) as a sustainable protein substitute in order to replace the use of small fish in animal feed. Organic waste is used as the raw material for nutrient recycling in the production of maggots. Maggots have a high protein content (39%-60%), which is almost three times than that p produced by fish. The remaining substrate will be used as a bio fertilizer due its high nitrogen content.

More than 1.3 billion people in the world have no access to electricity, and 3 billion are still cooking on dangerous and inefficient stoves. Many

of them live in remote rural village communities. Until such communities have access to modern energy services, little progress can

be made to develop their economies and improve their lives. The Smart Villages Initiative aims to provide policy makers, donors and ddevelopment agencies with new insights into the real barriers to energy access in villages in developing countries, how they can overcome, and to encourage innovative entrepreneurial solutions to rural energy

access.

Over a 3 year period commencing in 2014, we will be active in six rregions of the world (East and West Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Central and South America). Our activities bring together a diverse set of players - scientists and engineers, entrepreneurs, villagers and civil society organisations, NGO’s, financiers, policy makers and regulators - who are actively involved in addressing the challenges of village energy

for development.

Smart Villages have kindly sponsored the Off-Grid Track and their support towards DAREnterprisers and DARE to Change DAR has been invaluable.
