Bhullar soars high on eagle, claimsmaiden European Tour title

NATADOLA BAY (Fiji),Aug 5:

India's Gaganjeet Bhullartoday grabbed his maidenEuropean Tour title with a brilliantchip-in eagle on the 17th hole fora one-stroke win over a chargingAnthony Quayle of Australia atthe Fiji International here.

Going into the finalround, Bhullar withstoodintense pressure as heholed a monstrous chipfrom outside the greenfor an eagle-three at the17th to head into the lasthole with a one-shotadvantage over Quayle.

He calmly parred thelast hole to turn in a six-under 66 for a four-daytotal of 14-under 274,which earned him a winover Quayle, who brokethe course record with anine-under 63 at theNatadola Bay Championship GolfCourse.

It was Bhullar's first win onthe European Tour, ninth AsianTour title and 10th crown overall. He now becomes the most suc-cessful Indian player on AsianTour, overtaking the tally of eighttour wins by Arjun Atwal andJyoti Randhawa.

He is the first Indian to win onAustralasia Tour and also becamethe fifth from the country to winon European Tour after Atwal,Jeev Milkha Singh (4), SSPChawrasia (4) and Anirban Lahiri(2).

He now has an exemption onEuropean Tour, Australian Tourand Asian Tour till the end of2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively.

"I've been playing really well.It was just a matter of time and I'mglad it happened on this stage,"said Bhullar, who found the win-ning touch after 20 starts follow-ing his last title at the Macao Openlast year.

"This kind of good form wasdefinitely building up from last, Iwould say, two months, I had two

good finishes. In fact, more thantwo, but two runner up finishes onthe Asian Tour."

Besides the eagle, Bhullar alsosank five birdies against a lonebogey.

The key for Bhullar was thestart. He started superbly withthree birdies in the first four holesand kept his foot on the pedal. Hedropped a shot on Par-4 seventhbut got the back on Par-5 ninth toturn in 3-under 36.

He made a crucial par save on10th with a putt from more than20 feet and then birdied Par-313th.

He said, "I think the highlightof today's round would be the firstone hour of play. I was 3 underafter four holes and all those four

holes were really, really crucial.Had I not had a great start, any-thing could have happened."

Bhullar was 12-under when hecame to the Par-5 17th tee. At thatstage the scoreboard showedQuayle as 10-under for the dayand at 14-under for the tourna-ment.

Quayle narrowly missed abirdie chance on 18th, whileBhullar was still off thegreen with his second. Hedid have a similar chancefor a chip in the secondround.

Bhullar said, "I had a lit-tle bit of an idea that thischip is going to run a lot, butit wasn't an easy chip, Icould have easily missed upand down and would havehad to settle for second orthird. But it went and thatpretty much closed thedeal."

In the meantime, a mis-take on the scoreboard had alsobeen realised.

It transpired that the score-board had wrongly creditedQuayle with a birdie on Par-5ninth, when it was actually a par.So, his card when he turned it inwas actually 9-under and his totalwas 13-under.

The chip-in eagle took Bhullarfrom 12-under to 14-nder and pastQuayle, who was waiting for thefinish. Bhullar calmly landed hissecond shot on 18th to 10 feet andthen smartly rolled it to a tap-infor par and a one-shot win.

South Africa's four-timeMajor Championship winnerErnie Els carded 65 to finish attied third along with AustralianBen Campbell, who broughthome a card of six-under 66.

The other Indian in fray,Ajeetesh Sandhu scored 71 in thefinal round to end his campaign atthe tied 43rd spot.

Bhullar also credited coursedesigner and three-time Majorwinner Fijian legend Vijay Singhfor helping him with some adviceon the course and how to handle itthe previous night.(PTI)

Sindhu loses final yet again, settles for silver at World Championships

NANJING (CHINA), Aug 5:

P V Sindhu finished secondbest yet again in a major tourna-ment final as she went downtamely to Carolina Marin in theWorld Championships' women'ssingles title clash, adding to theIndian's tale of woes here today.

The Olympic silver medallistsettled for another white metal inthe showpiece following a 19-2110-21 loss to Olympic championMarin of Spain. Interestingly,Marin had also defeated Sindhuin the final of the Rio Olympicsin 2016.

"It is very frustrating to lossagain. Last time also I hadplayed the finals. It is quite sadand I have to come back strongerand get back to the sessions andprepare for the next tournament,"said Sindhu, who suffered herfourth final loss this season.

"Sometimes it is not yourday, ups and downs will alwaysbe there and you have to alwaysbe stronger.

"A bit sad because I wasexpecting a good one but overalla good match and I am happy Icame to the finals and winningand losing are parts of life and Ihave to take it as it is," she added.

Since 2016, it is Sindhu'seighth loss in major finals, including defeats at RioOlympics, Hong Kong Open(2017, 2018), Super Series Final(2017), India Open (2018) andThailand Open (2018).

The 23-year-old Sindhu, whohad lost an epic final to Japan'sNozomi Okuhara at Glasgowlast year, didn't have answers toMarin's blistering pace in the 45minutes that the match lasted.

The second silver meantSindhu is the only Indian to havefour world championships podi-um finishes. She had won twobronze medals at the 2013Guangzhou and 2014Copenhagen editions.

Marin became the firstwoman shuttler to win the worldchampionships thrice. She hadwon the title in 2014 and the

2015 Jakarta edition."I can't express my emotions.

I have so many emotions insideme. I have been waiting for thismoment long time. I am happy Icould believe in myself thisweek," Marin said.

Sindhu had entered the sum-mit clash with a 5-6 loss-winhead-to-head against Marin, butthe Indian ace had won the lastmeeting at the Malaysian Openin June.

"Carolina has that speed andshe is very aggressive. Sheplayed very fast and quick pacedduring the tournament. I wasprepared for her pace game,"Sindhu said.

The feisty Martin tried to putpressure on Sindhu by celebrat-ing each point with her trade-mark scream while parading thecourt.

Sindhu lagged 1-3 early onbut the Indian slowly made herway to grab a 4-3 lead after pro-ducing a brilliant drop. Sheextended it to 6-4.

With Sindhu in full flow, theleft-handed spaniard tried to putthe shot close to the line butended up committing too manyunforced errors as Sindhu led 11-8 at the break after Martin sentthe shuttle out thrice.

Sindhu extended the lead to15-11 after the breather but shefound the net twice and also hitwide to allow Marin claw back at15-15. The Spaniard thenunleashed a smash from near thenet to turn the tables.

A lucky net chord and thenMarin went wide, helpingSindhu to lead 18-17 but a weakreturn from the Indian and it wasequal again.(PTI)
