I have a life-long mission to serve as a positive change agent. I am driven in facilitating engaged scholarship that curates and stimulates innovation bridging industry, secondary, post-secondary and community-centered learning in food, fiber, and natural resources. Drawing heavily from a lifetime of engagement in agricultural education in multiple states and nations, I strive for scholarship that generates global impact, one student and one community at a time. My line of inquiry has focuses on developing authentic experiential educational opportunities while critically examining global professional pedagogical vision in perspective and practicing agricultural educators at the secondary and postsecondary levels.

SIGNIFICANT PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT IN CURRENT POSITION PSU Global Teach Ag! Initiative To assist in addressing the pressing 21st century issues facing the world through agricultural education, the Global Teach Ag! Initiative was developed with a mission to develop capacity in agriscience teachers and agriscience education programs for global impact in food, fiber, and natural resources through youth development and education programming. The mission is addressed through four core strategic areas: Scholarship; Global Teacher Candidate Preparation; Global Agricultural Teacher Professional Development, and K-12 Global Learning Outreach. To learn more, please visit: http://aese.psu.edu/teachag/global PSU Teach Ag Program Practitioner Curriculum Review Assisting in keeping the agricultural teacher education program is current and timely, in addition to NCATE accreditation process, practitioner review in a systematic fashion was implemented. A task force to address agricultural mechanics instruction resulted in the creation of the undergraduate course AEE 349: Ag Shop Processes and progressing to having all teacher education courses reviewed on an annual basis by a new committee of practicing agriculture teachers. Each course syllabus and assignment handbook is sent to the following committee: Agricultural Teacher Educator from a different state; first year teacher; second year teacher; third year teacher; teacher representing 4-10 years; teacher representing 10-15 years, and a teacher representing 15 years plus. PSU Teach Ag! Avenger Program To assist in program outreach and recruitment in the specialized field of agricultural teacher education, in 2012 the PSU Teach Ag! Avenger program was created to provide program outreach efforts, assist in recruiting, and provides another purposeful, intentional professional development opportunity for teacher candidates. The program was highlighted and applauded as innovative across the nation at the 2013 National Ag Ed Summit focusing on teacher recruitment and retention. Since 2012, student recruiters have conducted over 60 distinct recruiting events. PSU Teach Ag! Jobs List Recruiting students is one step, but ensuring their placement with viable employment and continuing to offer career placement assistance through their first years is critical to long term program growth. A PSU Teach Ag! Jobs Email list was developed for PSU Student Teachers and those within five years of graduation. Jobs from across the nation (and globe) in school-based agricultural education and closely related careers are shared. In 2014, 624 jobs from 48 states were shared. Since 2010, PSU has placed agricultural educators in 16 states/nations. Students with a PSU AEE Degree have a 100% employment rate with 72% being placed in school-based agricultural education in year following graduation. PSU Teach Ag! Thursday Top Tips for Job Preparation To assist senior agricultural teacher candidates prepare for the job market, the Teach Ag! Thursday Top Tips was created in the 2014. Students receive an email on Thursdays with one very direct tip for their personal professional preparation on topics such as digital presence, professional networking, resumes, cover letters, and negotiating. This supplements the core instruction provided in AEE 313 for job searches that focuses on face to face interactions. Expanded PSU AEE Major Undergraduate Research Program In order to further develop teacher candidates with critical thinking and data analysis skills, specifically with capacity to conduct action research to improve instructional practice and program impacts as well as learn to interpret data and prepare for potential graduate program work, undergraduate research by teacher candidates is emphasized. I have advised twelve candidates in conducting social science research projects both domestically and globally since 2010 with grants totaling over $30,000 for these students growth and development.

SIGNIFICANT PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT IN CURRENT POSITION [Continued] PSU Teach Ag! Social Media Platforms To engage stakeholders and future students from multiple locations, the PSU Teach Ag! Social Medial Platform Strategic Plan was created. Teach Ag! Avengers are provided instruction and assigned platforms to maintain and advance. Platforms included are:

Blog (Established March 2012, http://teachagpsu.blogspot.com, 206 posts, over 63,000 page views), A community of practice within the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) digital home (Established 2011, http://communities.naae.org/community/prodev/preservice/pennstate) Pinterest (Established 2012, http://pinterest.com/psuteachag/, 290 followers) Facebook (Established 2011, https://www.facebook.com/PSUTeachAg, 858 likes) Twitter (Established 2012, https://twitter.com/TeachAgPSU, 1,409 followers) Instagram (Established 2015, http://instagram.com/teachagpsu/, 135 followers)

PSU Teach Ag! Tuesday Email Blast To keep students informed of the unique opportunities available within the teacher education preparation program, to assist in effective advising, and to assist in connecting with students who identify as AEE pre-major at a commonwealth campus, the PSU Teach Ag! Tuesday Email Blast was created in 2013. Every Tuesday, an email with upcoming events, deadlines and opportunities is shared with all students identified as member of a student teaching cohort or currently enrolled in an AEE course instructed by the PSU Agricultural Teacher Education Team. In addition, key internal and external strategic partners receive the blast to promote synergistic opportunity. PSU Teach Ag! Great Ag Teacher Chat To assist in delivering dynamic professional development to current agriscience teachers in the field and to expand the professional network of current pre-service candidates, the first Penn State Center for Professional Personnel Development Webinar Series called PSU Teach Ag! Great Teacher Chat was created in 2014. National award winning agriscience educators from outside of Pennsylvania were selected to deliver a one-hour program. PSU Teach Ag! Thursday Technical Update Webinars As an expansion of the success of the PSU Great Ag Teacher Chat, the PSU Teach Ag! Thursday Technical Update Webinar was created in the fall 2013. The presenters in this series are stakeholders in school-based agricultural education from within Pennsylvania. Presenters are selected to provide a critical update to each of the three primary components of school-based agricultural education: Classroom/Lab Instruction, Career & Technical Student Organizations (FFA), and Work-based Learning Supervision (Supervised Agricultural Experiences). PSU Teach Ag! Society (Undergraduate Student Organization) Knowing the importance that student co-curricular programs can have on student academic achievement and success, the PSU Teach Ag! Society was created as a student organization in 2012. Successes have included the establishment of student executive team and a balanced, engaging program of activities. This student organization represented Penn State at the National Alpha Tau Alpha/Ag Ed Conclave winning multiple national championships in various events. A specific programming success includes the development of the annual Domestic Study Away Program where students learn critical teaching and learning concepts while visiting/engaging in school-based agricultural education in a different state. In 2013, while learning about multicultural competency, students visited six programs in Arizona including two on a Native American reservation. In 2014, students learned service-learning pedagogies while partnering with Boulder School District in Colorado to assist with a USDA Farm to School grant focused on school gardens. In 2015, students traveled over 1300 miles in Mississippi providing instruction in partnership with Mississippi State University on developing financial literacy in rural areas through supervised agricultural experiences.

scholarly writing and service activities.

Teaching:

● I have designed and delivered 27 different courses at Penn State, The Ohio State University

and Willcox High School with above average student and peer rating of instruction.

● One significant aspect of teaching is advising:

- I currently have 34 undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Agricultural and

Extension Education major or the Agricultural Science major on my advising roster and

provide academic assistance to many more students currently at Penn State

commonwealth campuses.

- I work with each advisee to create a total plan for exit that not only identifies courses

needed to be completed in a semester, but also requires the individual student to identify

enhancement experiences (co-curricular, undergraduate research, etc.) and a suggested

plan all the way to graduation.

scholarly writing and service activities. [Continued]

Teaching [Continued]

- I work to meet face-to-face with all advisees each semester and provide an advising blog

“The Nittany Owl” to help as well. http://nittanyowl.blogspot.com/

- At the graduate level, I am currently the lead advisor for one Ph.D. student and 10

M.Ed./M.S. students.

- I have worked with a multi-disciplinary team in the College of Agricultural Sciences to

develop a competency based faculty advising program for the college. This was presented

on and shared at the NACADA conference and NACTA conference.

Research:

The desired outcomes of my current research agenda include improving the effectiveness of agricultural education teachers and programs. This would include impacts of improved retention rates of agriscience teachers; lasting transfer of learning from post-secondary and secondary instruction; and meaningful community partnerships to provide a prepared workforce for the agricultural industry. My scholarship involves the integration of teaching and research into two major foci directly related to my goal of enhancing and advancing agricultural education. My primary operational framework foci are:

(1) Agricultural Teacher Preparation and Development a. Exploring factors that impact self-efficacy of agriculture teacher candidates b. Developing global competency of preservice agricultural teacher candidates and existing agricultural educators c. Exploring impact of global competency on student achievement. d. Advise and lead agricultural teacher educators across the nation in developing 21st century agricultural educators

(2) Teaching and Learning in Secondary and Post-secondary School-Based Agriculture a. Describing and exploring college instructor philosophy and practice in post-secondary school classrooms b. Utilizing contextually relevant experiential education opportunities in secondary and post-secondary school programs c. Utilization of technology in achieving learning outcomes in secondary and post-secondary school programs. d. Exploring factors that lead to community-driven, student-centered secondary agriscience program success

One unique aspect of my research program is intentional, purposeful integration of undergraduate research into teacher preparation. Since 2009, I have had 12 undergraduates complete undergraduate research projects both domestically and globally (earning over $30,000 in funds to complete). Four were Penn State Schreyer’s Honors students. In addition, an action-based research project assignment was designed and implemented as a requirement during the student teaching internship.
