dance is repeated throughout to achieveunity. Preceding the first dance is a briefclarinetcadenza, whichreturnsneartheendof the work. Surging melodic ideas, stronglyrhythmic pulses, and colourful orchestrationcharacterize the music. The melodies arederived from folksong – some nostalgic, some exuberant, most presented initially bywoodwindinstruments, especiallytheclarinet.
Kodály wrote the Dances of Galánta in1933 for the eightieth anniversary of thefounding of the Budapest PhilharmonicSociety. His distinguished Hungariancolleague Erno Dohnányi conducted thepremiereonOctober23ofthatyear.

Violin Concerto No. 2, Sz. 112
Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto waswritten in 1937-38 for the violinist ZoltánSzékely, with whom Bartók had formed afriendshipyearsbefore. Bartók’s concertoalso belongs securely in their company foritslyricism, warmthandaccessiblestyle.
When Székely asked Bartók to writea concerto for him, he had in mind atraditional, full-fledged, three-movementwork.

The concerto opens with the soloharp gently strumming B-major chords,as tonal and consonant a sound as youcould find anywhere. Cellos softly pluck anintroductory motif.
