DANCE SCHOOL FINAL PROJECT
academic experience

Munich , Germany
Final Project PFC
base design and working project Dance school. Munich
Concrete bearing walls defi ne the square
The concrete walls defi ne the “cover Square” which house the
common spaces of the dance school.
The four volumes frame the vegetation.
Courtyard organizes the space
The courtyard as an organizer of this square. The bearing walls,
the courtyard and the structure viewed, confi gured four places
that form the “rhythmic space” of the school.
The central courtyard is a composition system, a mechanism that
allows the linking of diff erent parts and represents a part of the
park inside the school.
relation between the school and the park
The Park is public and school private.
I am looking for a connection of the school spaces with the park.
This is the reason for the existence of the courtyards.
The school does not have direct openings on the outside, always
they are across a fi lter - court.
porch, terrace or patio
The courtyards have diff erent functions; terraces when the woo-
den pavement spreads and fi lter-courtyard when the concrete
changes to gravel.
Server space and served
Each “box” is composed of;
a space of service divided into two levels, with a technical
fl oor on the top.
a space with double height for the dancing classrooms
courtyard as an organizer element
The court provides the spaces of light and ventilation in the
areas of service and of nature, light and ventilation in the
areas of dance. It separates these two necessary uses pro-
viding each of them with his particular needs.
The building is situated following the trees line of the pedestrian area, opening a new entrances to the park by the widening of the tree-lined avenue,
perfectly adapted to the school complex. Enjoying of the great plane extension of the park orientated to the south and respecting the equipments
and vegetation existent.
The school is organised in one fl oor because there is no point in growing up searching for views, instead of having a direct relation to the park.
The pavement organizes the park
The extension of the pavement, wooded street widening forms
the main entrance to the school.
The extension of pavement in the snack bar area, the south fa-
cing wooded mass create a new square.
This terrace dive in the park is the point of connection with the
current school assembly and a possible second access.
relation between the school and the park
The courtyard is a very important element in this Project, is
an extension of the classrooms, snack bar, hall ...and the re-
lation space between dancers and visitors.
structure, dance and architecture
As a general term, rhythm is the succession of events when
they save a rhythmic order. The items are repeated harmo-
nious and organized, whether visual or audible, forming a
structure.
The intention is to create, through the structure, harmony and
clarity, an environment that will encourage dancing. Try that
the skeleton of the building dialogue with the interior use,
the dance.
The project works on a grid of 3.60 in a pattern forming or-
ganized structure.
At the school the monolithic walls resolves in a single mate-
rial structural requirements and enclosure assembly. The HLE
is a concrete with low density and thermal conductivity and
high acoustic isolation.
base
Concrete walls arranged as a box are structure and vertical
enclosed.
main beam perimeter binding structural assembly
Main perimeter beam that ataches the whole structure and
work as an inverted limit, avoiding having views to the su-
rrounding buildings and framing the greenery of the park.
self-supported elements in a closed circuit
A third element allows the free up of the central and common
spaces of the dance school.
The basis of your balance lies in that an element is supported
in the next item, and so on, until the last item ultimately rests
on the fi rst closing the circle of the self-supporting
rhythmic spaces
Concrete beams are arranged around the spiral-shaped
beams spaces defi ning relationship of the school.
They diff er in their direction, singing the girders (depending
on the light) and presence of skylights.
element to counter the eff ects of the wind
Structural element to counter eff ects of the wind on the pe-
rimeter beams and collaborate with the weight of the beam.
In the areas of access and terrace the structural element is
horizontal (metallic slat)
in the areas of outdoor patio the structural element is vertical
(metallic pillar)
Dance fi tted out areas
These areas are characterized by their maximum headroom
of 4.25m where the spaces are devoted to the dance and
their specifi c technical characteristics as the administration.
The mentioned areas are all related between them with the
park through a patio which helps to extend the space.
Vegetation is invited to the inside of the classroom by the
huge window. In the moment of entering in the dance school
the fi rst you will appreciate is that the offi ces have no visual
limits as has another light and vegetation entrance.
Areas needed of natural illumination and ventilation
Changing rooms, bathrooms and kitchen are localized at
one side of the patio considering they need more ventilation
and light that other areas. The courtyard belongs to the clas-
srooms, so their relationship with it is done through a lands-
cape window with vertical wooden slats that provide privacy.
The services area is located in the lower fl oor having direct
access from the outside and great ventilation, having a height
of 1.90m in the cover of each volume.
Common spaces
The edgewise girder structure collaborates in the composi-
tion of these spaces. The four volumes that conform the “in
between” can work out in a independent or collective way
depending of the disposition of the door-sliding furniture
which are under the spiral girders.
Each lounge/rooms is defi ned by the direction/position of the
structure, the edgewise of the girders (depending of the dis-
tance) and the entrance of natural light.

Dance is one of the oldest art forms of man. The tribes were
accustomed to dance around a symbol, a tree, a totem, fi re,
newlyweds or any other representative elements. In this case
the yard and tree are the center of the ritual, is a place in
itself, and much more than just an artifact designed for light
to enter.
This composition of the courtyard and control of views,
allows both, dancers and walker to enjoy of the art of dan-
cing, of the surrounding nature.
The purpose of the school is to benefi t of a continuous inte-
raction of ideas. That’s the reason why, it has to be a maxi-
mum visible inside the school. The presence of someone has
to be known so he can be involved in the activities having
a place.
This open and continuous space is like a cover square, or-
ganized by four spaces around the main courtyard. The
furniture-doors provide of diff erent degrees of privacy and
diff erent uses.
_ground fl oor
The idea is that the dancers have the maximum rating with
the park, but this park is public. That’s why the schools grow
from a base of 40 cm.
Under 2.30m is where people “live”: the people are in con-
tact with the room, the materials, the sunlight, the vegeta-
tion... and between them. Above 2.30 the rhythm of the struc-
ture characterizes the space.
The decision of the scene structure is because I want it to
be the one that’s defi nitely the diff erent spaces, I don’t want
additional element needed. The main material is concrete
formwork fi r planks placed vertically to form the structure.
Clear pine wood is used for furniture (doors, frames, tables,
chairs...), in suspended ceilings, outside pavements and the
partition in the form of H of the box.
The vegetation is the third material and fi nally the sunlight,
important design element.
_planta cenital
The roof is part of the landscape of the park, the surrounding
building is very tall so I treat the roof as if it was a fi fth eleva-
tion The facilities are integrated and you can even recognize
the structure of the roof.
Facilities : The building organizes in four volumes
The main facility room is located on the ground fl oor where
all the common service machines are stored ( transformer
station, counters, boiler and tank, cooling unit…). From this
service room, by the roof, the water fl ows through pipes ther-
mally insulated to the other roof services room of every box.
The water goes into the air-conditioner machine.
The fresh or warm air conducts are housed in the suspended
ceiling of each box, and are viewed at the common spaces (
with the same organization as the structure)
Every “box” has a space for the facilities, such as collectors of
the underground heating, hoses, extinguishers, downspout
rainwater... integrate in a furniture.
