SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES

HANDBOOKDANCE REVELATION 2018-19

MISSION STATEMENT

The objective of this handbook is to keep the students, parents, and staff dancing to the same beat. The philosophies, policies, and information included in this hand-

book reflect the attitude, beliefs, and goals of the director and staff. Please take time to read this entire handbook.

Dance Revelation’s goal is to be a future leader in dance education. We aim to encourage individuals to be the best dancers they can be, which is why we are inclusive of every student no matter their level of experience.

We believe a teacher’s influence on the future of a student extends far beyond what happens in the classroom. Our teaching philosophy is centered on instilling a passion for dance while building self-esteem and confidence in every student. The students’ well-being is our priority; their capability is secondary.

Dance Revelation seeks to place each student in the level that is best for him or her. There is no set path at Dance Revelation, and we encourage each student to be proud of what he or she has accomplished throughout the year and his or her dance career.

At Dance Revelation we offer an entry level program with classes for students from 3-11 years old. Students move through Level 1 Ballet/Tap (ages 3-4, 5-6, and 7-11) to our Ballet Conservatory typically around ages 8-10 years old.

Our Ballet Conservatory of Dance Revelation (BCDR) excels students in an envi-ronment that demands excellence and commitment. We believe that the more ballet classes a student takes, the faster he or she will excel. We also believe that learning other types of genres such as jazz, tap, and modern creates a well rounded dancer. We have witnessed this to be true, that the more classes a student takes promotes re-sponsibility, dedication, and hard work. Our BCDR program allows staff to work with students to focus on the areas they are excelling in, partnering with them to see the maximum growth possible.

Some BCDR students may be selected to be in our Company Program. This program offers four levels: Understudy, Prep, Pre-Professional, and Professional. Understudies do not perform, but they learn technique/movement and attend all prep classes. Prep students take 1 class a week and perform 2 pieces at 2 competitions. Pre-Professional students take 2 classes a week and perform 3 pieces at 3 competitions. Professional students take 3 classes a week and perform 4 pieces at 3 competitions. Select students will perform with the Company at the Annual Performance.

Please note that it is rare for a student to move up a level every year or even every two or three years. It is possible for a student to progress more quickly, but each student is assessed and placed into the appropriate level each year. To progress more quickly, your child may look into summer programs, both at DR and outside of our school.

As students get older, they may be invited to be in our Student Leadership Program, assisting with younger classes and leading by serving DR as a whole. Students are selected as needed based on their shown dedication, commitment, and responsibility.

Dance Revelation supports all local arts in the area. We truly want each family to be on board with our philosophy and continue dancing, no matter where, as their journey takes them. We hope you have found your home at Dance Revelation.

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

THE CLASSROOMAt Dance Revelation we value the opportunity to be a part of each of our student’s lives. Along with providing the best possible dance training for each student, we en-courage positive traits such as high morale, high self-esteem, responsibility, self-disci-pline, teamwork, concentration, perseverance, and most importantly, the realization that if students work hard they can achieve their goals. Having an “I can do it” mentality takes our students to the next level in dance.

Be ready to learn, grow, and receive constructive correction. Our teachers will be friendly but firm to help our students grow. Discipline and dance go hand in hand; students who understand discipline are the most successful dancers.

Teachers prepare for classes by setting goals for what they wish to accomplish with each group of students, depending on skill level. We look forward to the oppor-tunity to become acquainted with each student this coming year.

We desire to create a positive atmosphere which will encourage freedom for students to grow in their passion for the art of dance.

Each student will be treated equally by the teachers and staff. Teachers will ab-solutely not encourage competitive attitudes as this can become destructive to the students and the school. We encourage our students to make every effort to be the best they can be.

ATTENDANCEAttendance will be taken at the start of each class. Consistent attendance is impera-tive as absences can hold back an entire class, and the studio cannot jeopardize its responsibility for the rest of the class because of one dancer.

We strongly encourage students to make up any missed classes during the year since we do not provide refunds for any classes missed. Making up a class does not erase an absence. Please know that if your child exceeds our absence policy he or she may not be able to perform in the Performances.

Entry level students may miss 4 classes from September to December (Semester 1) and another 4 classes from January-June (Semester 2). Make-up classes exist in the form of other regularly scheduled classes that a student may attend, but the class may or may not be in his or her skill level. If a dancer is absent for three weeks in a row, the teacher will notify the office who will then contact the parent/student to determine the reason for the absences.

BCDR ABSENCE POLICY Students in BCDR are allowed to miss 8 days of dance per semester. Absences are not erased with make-up classes, but attending a make-up class is required. Make-up classes are in the form of a comparable class so students get their set number of hours per week.

Should your family experience extenuating circumstances, please contact the of-fice. Private lessons will be required in these instances.

Please note that any ballet/tap/jazz rehearsal days missed must be made up with a private lesson. All students are required to attend extra rehearsals and dress rehearsals.

COMPANY PROGRAM ABSENCE POLICY After reviewing the rehearsal schedule, Company dancers may only miss up to 2 rehearsals led by the same choreographer, per semester. Student may miss no more than 4 total rehearsals each semester.

If a dancer exceeds the attendance policy, he or she will be dismissed from this program.

Private lessons may be required for any absences upon teacher’s discretion.

The Company Program requires students to be a part of The Ballet Conservatory. Students in this program may not exceed the BCDR attendance policy.

If a student is tardy 3 or more times, they may be required to take additional technique classes.

ATTIRE & REGULATIONSAll students must attend the classes that are part of their dance curriculum. Addition-al ballet, tap, and/or jazz classes may be approved to be taken during semester 1 at the rate of $10 per month, per class.

All female students MUST have their hair pulled away from their face. For entry level classes, hair must also be off of the neck (in a bun/braid/ponytail). Body align-ment is critical in ballet, and the instructor must be able to see the line of a student’s body from the ears, the back of the neck, and down the spine. BCDR students must have the proper ballet cinnamon bun.

All students’ belongings must be marked with the student’s name. Every student should have a dance bag with his or her name clearly marked. All belongings must fit into the student’s dance bag while the student is in class. Please do not leave belongings scattered in the waiting room.

Do not wear jewelry in class. Very small stud earrings are the only jewelry al-lowed in dance class. Please do not bring jewelry to the studio.

Laces and strings must be tucked into ballet slippers. If the strings are too long, please trim, but be sure to leave enough for adjusting. Do NOT pull the strings out of the shoe. Level 1 NO ballet strings. Please tie a double knot then cut the extra

string. Any strings left on shoes after the first month of class will be cut by instructors for the dancer’s safety.

All students are required to pick up after themselves and to leave the waiting area, studio, and restroom neat and orderly. Toys and books should be returned to their proper place.

We encourage healthy snacks after school. Please be aware that snacks consist-ing of sugars and caffeine can make it very difficult for the student to concentrate while in class. No fast food or greasy food is allowed in the studio area, it must be eaten in the café.

Students/parents are NOT allowed behind the counter in the café area. This is off limits. Café area is for studying/homework only. All social talk should be in the lobby and waiting areas.

Please bring a water bottle from home as it is important to be hydrated while dancing. However, please do not bring any other beverage to the studio.

Students should arrive and be ready to dance at least 5 minutes prior to their scheduled class time. It is very important not to be late for class. Students should not be dropped off and left unattended more than 10 minutes before class.

Please do not bring any invitations, gifts, or treats to class unless they are for the entire class.

Please do not allow younger children to touch or hit the glass or to stand on the stools, benches, or chairs.

PERFORMANCESDance Revelation is proud to put on a professional level performance at the end of each year. The costs associated with the performance (costumes, props, tights, etc.) are built into the child’s monthly tuition. Some classes may have homemade costumes, and this information is TBA. Students must participate in the performance for every class they take that performs.

Other costs associated with the performance NOT built into tuition include option-al items like apparel, yearbook messages, and DVD orders as well as tickets to the show to see your child perform.

Undergarments may be required at additional cost to the student. Some classes may also be required to purchase shoes. This is TBD based on the costume and the class.

If your child drops out after January 1st, you will still receive a costume. If your child drops out prior to January 1st, you will not receive a costume or a refund for any tuition fees paid. Tuition is non-refundable.

More information regarding our Annual Performance will be passed out in the Performance Handbook in the fall.

PAYMENT INFORMATIONTuition is due on the 1st of each month September through June (10 months). Stu-dents who fail to pay by the 10th of each month will be charged a $10 late fee. If tuition is turned in later than the 10th of the month and the late fee is not included, your account will be marked as “late fee owed.” If your account is 30 days past due, your child may be unable to participate during class, and he or she will be asked to sit down and observe.

All accounts must be paid to date for students to participate in our Performances.

Dance Revelation uses automatic payment withdrawal from a credit/debit card or checking account. By completing the Recurring Charge Authorization Form and submitting it to the office, you are giving consent to be automatically charged each month by “ANGA,” which represents Dance Revelation. Accounts will be charged on the 1st of each month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, accounts will be charged the next business day.

Any other fees can be paid via automatic withdrawal with user permission.

Additional fees can also be paid online at dancerevelation.com. We accept Mas-terCard/Visa/American Express/Discover.

If by check make payable to “ANGA”. If by cash, clearly mark envelope with amount and first/last name of student/parent.

Tuition is based on a 4-week month. Tuition will be the same whether it is a 3 or 5 week month. There are no pro-rated fees for missed classes. There will be no refunds for missed classes. All students must pay full tuition for the month regardless of circumstance. If your child drops out halfway through a month, you still pay the entire tuition for that month.

Dance Revelation allows parents to pay up front for the entire year of dance class-es with a 10% discount. Please note, if you choose this option and then withdrawal at any time, for any reason, you will be charged a $30 processing fee for refunds given. To receive this discount, you must pay in full by September 30th.

Tuition is based on 10 months (September-June). Should a class be cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, or should a student miss class because of illness, a makeup class can be scheduled within one month, with prior instructor consultation as to appropriate class placement. Tuition refunds are NOT given for missed classes.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Please check for e-mail notification if there is any question of classes being can-celled. It is not always possible to contact via telephone when inclement weather occurs. E-mail is our primary method to communicate closings. No refunds will be given for missed classes.

SAFETY

The safety of our students is a priority. If a student is injured during class, all activity will be stopped and the incident will be reported to the office. In case of a serious injury, the parents will be notified and 911 will be called immediately.

All students must have a liability form signed by their parent/guardian PRIOR to starting class. No students can dance until the form is signed.
