Short History of "The Dance ofthe Sugar Plum Fairy"

In Tchaikovsky's ballet "The Nutcracker", theSugar Plum Fairy rules over the Kingdomof Sweets. When the heroine of the ballet,Clara, (Marie in some versions) helps theNutcracker kill the Mouse King and breaksthe magic spell, the Nutcracker turns into a

Prince and takes her to his kingdom ingratitude. The Sugar Plum Fairy presidesover the festivities held in Clara's honor.

Her solo number, the "Dance of the SugarPlum Fairy", is one of the most famouspieces in the entire "Nutcracker" ballet.Check out my entire Nutcracker Unit Study here.

Listening Exercise:

There are several variations of this famous piece from "The Nutcracker". Listen to all of them separately and record what you hear for each piece. Then listen to them back to back and use the Venn Diagram to compare and contrast what you hear. Click on the links below to hear the different versions.

I recommend listening to the pieces without the video (at first). Videos can be distracting, so just allow them to listenand soak up the music. Then, if they want to watch the dance video, they can do that here.
