Each year Dan Patch Days is pulled together by a multitude of dedicated committee members and volunteers, building on the foundation the Jaycees cemented back in the 1990’s when they resurrected the event. Years of fiscal acumen, contingency planning and convincing volunteers has allowed the Dan Patch Days Inc. organization to give back over $150,000 to the community and to charitable organizations over the past eight years. However, that hasn’t always been the case. As people were just getting over their Year 2000 (Y2K) fears, the Day Patch Days committee was faced with a doomsday crisis of its own in 2000. Just two years earlier, organizers had moved the event from August to June so volunteers didn’t have to spend their summers attending planning meetings. Father’s Day weekend was chosen, but proved to be a difficult date to recruit volunteers. So the festival was moved to the weekend after Father’s Day for 2000, but that weekend had its own issues.

Among the popular attractions in those days were the traditional carnival rides, but with long standing commitments for the last weekend in June, there were no carnival ride operators available for the new dates. In addition, several parade entry regulars were not available due to the date change and sponsor donations were down fifty percent. To top it off, a key committee member had to resign for personal reasons. The word around town was that Dan Patch

Days was dead. But for the remaining committee members, that just wasn’t right. With just $3,000 in the bank and the determination of a Pacer set on running a mile in one minute, 55 seconds, the Dan Patch Days committee made the difficult choice to significantly downsize the event. With no financial reserves, there was no room for error or there would be no seed money for the 2001 celebration. “A lot of people rallied around us,” said chair Tom Brennan, “and we thought we could still have a nice celebration that people would enjoy bringing their families to.”

The downtown parade went off flawlessly along with the annual Fire Department pancake breakfast, and the Kiddie games and the Water Fights were still held in Hollywood Park. And brand new that year, the band Night Louie entertained the crowd before a fireworks display at Community Park to end the one day festival. At the time, Rob Fendler was not only a Dan Patch Days committee member, but also our city’s Mayor. In his weekly column in the Savage Pacer, Mayor Fendler penned, “Dan Patch Days almost didn’t happen at all this year. Yet the strength of community pride kept the tradition alive. That’s what makes this city great.” To this day, Dan Patch Days aims to do just that – highlight what makes this city great. Of course, you will still be able to get your old domestic favorites: Miller Lite, Bud, MGD Light, MGD and Coors Light. For those looking for a more robust beer flavor, be sure to “hop” on over and check out our wide variety of craft beer. We can’t reveal the flavors just yet, as some things just need to “brew” over time.

NEW Craft Beers at the Savage Rotary Craft Beer & Wine Tasting – Thursday June 20th! Not sure if you like craft beer? What’s on “Tap” at Dan Patch Days 2013?

Within the city, The Savage Rotary has funded the history kiosk at the Depot, purchased the bocce balls courts at Community Park, landscaped the Ports of Savage, provided hats and mittens to students in need at M.W. Savage, provided a speed sign at Red Tail Ridge School, participated with a team in the Polar Plunge, adopted gardens at Hollywood and Warren Butler Parks and collected items for Bridging at Dump on Savage Day.

With the sale of the Dan Patch Days button and the first clue for the Horseshoe Hunt, residents know that

Dan Patch Days is approaching! Collector buttons are sold for $3 at the Razor’s Edge Barber Shop and the Savage Public Library. The first button was sold in 1953 and the entire collection is on display at the museum at the library. A button is mandatory to participate in the horseshoe hunt. The horseshoe hunt started 17 years ago as a

means to spark interest in the history of the city. Clues will appear on the Dan Patch Historical Society website, www.danpatch.com, and the Savage Pacer, five weeks before the event to find the hidden horseshoe located on public property. The finder receives $100 and an opportunity to ride in the grand parade. The button and the hunt are sponsored by the Dan Patch Historical Society with the clue master being one of its members.

This “no utensils needed” eating contest will be held Saturday, June 22nd at 2:15 p.m. in front of the main stage in Community Park. Individuals 16 years or older may register by submitting a completed registration form and the $10 entry fee. Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ ChallengeThe Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ Challenge will be held on Friday, June 21st from 8:15pm-8:30pm at Community Park in front of the Main Stage. Register at Buffalo Wild Wings in Savage or at the event on Friday night of Dan Patch Days! There is no charge to enter the “Blazin’ Challenge” but space is limited – early sign up is recommended! All contestants must have a paid admittance to the park on Friday night, in order to compete. Blazin’ Challenge T-shirts will be awarded to those that finish their wings in the time period allotted.

Everyone loves a Parade…Especially the Dan Patch Days!!Thousands of onlookers will fill the sidewalks of downtown Savage to enjoy the sights and sounds of the “Grand” Parade that will be held on Sunday, June 23rd at 1:00pm. This is a fabulous way to get your business or organization noticed, but hurry, space is limited!
