Light affects all that we perceive, so the importance of good lighting cannot beoverstated. Designed Architectural Lighting, founded in 1984, has steadily establisheditself as one of Britain’s leading independent companies in the design and manufactureof luminaires. DAL’s philosophy is one of constant improvement. Our aim is to design,develop and manufacture products of the highest standard whilst working closely withclients and their needs.

Company procedures ensure that a consistency of product quality and respect for theenvironment is maintained by constant monitoring. This is recognised by DAL obtainingthe ISO 9001 quality mark and ISO 14001 accreditation.

The range of products presented in this catalogue is the result of DesignedArchitectural Lighting’s experience in integrating the needs of architects, designers andengineers with the best in lamp technology and materials. Fluorescent and HIDluminaires are supplied with the latest developments in control gear ensuring the bestin energy efficiency. Designed Architectural Lighting products are designed and built inthe United Kingdom to conform to the requirements EN 60598-1.

It is essential that the correct lamp type must be used. Incorrect lamps may affect the operation of the luminaire and insome cases seriously overheat the luminaire. All fittings are supplied without lamps unless otherwise specified. Lampspecifications are typical and should be checked with the manufacturer’s up-to-date information. Dimensions areshown in mm.

Visitors to the 180 metre high building are drawn into the airy, cathedral-like lift lobby.The walls, clad in satin stainless tubes, are lit with METRO 161, 35W CDM-TC 3000Kdownlighters. Mounted in a narrow slot offset from the wall by 250mm, the specularblack cone fixtures are set at 500mm centres. Winner of the RIBA Stirling prize 2004,the Swiss Re development at 30 St Mary Axe is also affectionately known as theGherkin. DAL also supplied TEMPO and AMBIANCE downlighters together with severalcustom designed products as part of a bigger lighting package.One London Wall, City of London

Close to Aldersgate, One London Wall is situated opposite the Museum of London andthe Kentish ragstone remains of the original Roman fortifications. Specially designeddownlighters were supplied for the interior and exterior perimeter lighting of thisstriking building with curved glass façade. DAL worked closely with the designers toensure the exacting lighting design specification was fulfilled.

The BBC’s new Broadcast Centre at White City is home to their state-of-the-art television playout business. DAL worked closely with thedesign team to develop luminaires suitable for the architectural and building constraints. As a result a new shallow depth METRO 143 wasdeveloped. TEMPO 226 was made in recessed, semi-recessed and drum versions. These were supplied as part of a bigger lighting packagefor the Media Village development. All the new buildings of the Media Village have been awarded a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating.

Chelsea College of Art has an impressive new campus onMillbank next to Tate Britain. The College location was formerlythe world famous Millbank Military Hospital, then the RoyalArmy Medical College. TEMPO 161 and 190 compact fluorescent,and AMBIANCE low voltage downlighters were used throughoutthe interior for general and accent lighting.

Utilising different lighting elements within each area of the building, DPA’sdesign provides both appropriate illumination levels and a visually stimulatingworking environment. To meet their design requirements DAL supplied themajority of fixtures including VETRO multi lamp recessed luminaire, andTEMPO downlighters and wallwashers. The result has been well received andawarded the British Council for Offices, London Regional Award 2006.

The Exchange Place entrance to Broadgate offers an attractive and enticing night scene. Anincreasingly vibrant and exciting social environment, the Broadgate public areas saw a recent upgradein the lighting. DAL worked closely with the designers, both refurbishing original luminaires with up todate light sources, and creating new ‘corporate’ wall lights.

MBLD were awarded the IALD Award of Excellence 2004, and LIF Exterior Lighting Category 2004.

OPTIONS:

There are components available for the remote testing of the integrity of an emergency lighting system. Most can beincorporated with DAL products. For other emergency lighting specification e.g. Static Inverter/Central Battery System,and Self Test Systems. Details can be provided on application.

SELF TESTING AND OTHER SYSTEMS

To meet the latest building regulations there is a growing requirement to dim and control luminaires, either individuallyor in groups, as part of an energy saving strategy. Creative lighting design solutions coupled with today’s environmentalissues are elements that Designed Architectural Lighting have recognised.

In most cases luminaires can be supplied with suitable ballasts that can be controlled from a recognised lighting controlsystem; 1-10 volt analogue signal, DSI digital signal or DALI digital signal. More details can be supplied on application.Please note that in some minor instances luminaires are not available with the integral control gearbox.

Please note that lamps have to run for 100 hours (burned in), as the lamp manufacturers’ instructions, to ensure the bestdimming qualities.

Due to Building Regulations, the Fire Precautions Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act it is necessary to providesuitable means of escape from a building in the event of an emergency. Therefore an essential element is to provideenough light for escape. Most of Designed Architectural Lighting luminaires are available as emergency versions and areclassed as ‘self contained 3 hour duration’ which meet the requirements of EN 60598-1, EN 60598-2.22, and BS5266.

Compact fluorescent luminaires are generally operated on a maintained basis where one lamp is on at all times whetherbeing operated normally from the mains supply, or from the self contained emergency control gear. In most cases theemergency control gear will pass through the luminaire aperture. A small green battery charging LED is fitted to theluminaire ceiling trim.

Semi recessed downlighters

Where the ceiling void is shallow and adeep cone downlighter is necessary adrop trim can be a solution.

Sloping ceilings

To maximise the amount of daylight theuse of a sloping ceiling detail at theperimeter of a building is a commonoccurrence.

A downlighter that follows the angle ofthe slope is a useful tool for adding lightto the perimeter.

Pour boxes

These are now a common requirementfor passively cooled buildings or thosethat do not have suspended ceiling.Installed at the first stage of buildingconstruction, the pour box can bedesigned to suit different buildingconstraints.

University College London was founded in 1826 to provide a progressive alternative education tothat offered at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Originally designed by William Wilkins (thearchitect of London’s National Gallery) the airy North and South Cloisters have been refurbishedrecently. The work included an upgrade to the lighting. The new fittings, still in keeping with theexisting opal glass pendants, now house both metal halide and compact fluorescent lampsincreasing the lighting levels with a more technical lighting solution.

50, St James’s Street first opened in 1827 and became ‘the most talked about gambling hall in the most talked about street in the most talkedabout city in the world’, when The Duke of Wellington gambled under candlelight. Now the gaming tables of Fifty London are lit withingeniously designed pendants. The exacting brief required the lighting to be even, shadow-less, and glare-free for the players and the CCTVmonitors. Cameras are incorporated in the pendants, which provide not only direct lighting from adjustable pinhole downlighters but alsodiffused, general lighting through traditional lampshade material. Winner of the Lighting for Leisure category, Lighting Design Awards 2006.

Transformers

One of the standard features of Designed Architectural Lighting’s transformer, catalogue number 36105, is that it can bedimmed from compatible leading and trailing edge phase cut dimmers.

Other standard features of the transformer is that it is overload and short circuit protected. It is light in weight, small insize and will pass through minimal ceiling apertures. It also comes equipped with cord bars at both ends and has alooping facility at the mains input end.

For other transformer types, details can be supplied on application.

CONTROL AND DIMMING

There are components available for the remote testing of the integrity of an emergency lighting system. Most can beincorporated with DAL products. For other emergency lighting specification e.g. Static Inverter/Central Battery System,and Self Test Systems. Details can be provided on application.


Due to Building Regulations, the Fire Precautions Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act it is necessary to providesuitable means of escape from a building in the event of an emergency. Therefore an essential element is to provideenough light for escape. Most of Designed Architectural Lighting luminaires are available as emergency versions and areclassed as ‘self contained three hour duration’ which meet the requirements of EN 60598-1, EN 60598-2.22, and BS5266.

Low voltage luminaires are generally operated on a maintained basis, where one lamp is on at all times, whether beingoperated normally from the mains supply or from the self contained emergency control gear. Please note that due to thephysical size of the batteries in relationship to the relatively small size of low voltage luminaires, the emergency controlgear will not always pass through the luminaires’ apertures.

DESIGN FEATURES:

Metal halide lamps are operated from control gear mounted within or adjacent to the downlighter. All control gear ishigh frequency/electronic.

One of the standard features of Designed Architectural Lighting’s metal halide control gear, is a one piece fully electronicunit. It is complete with an interconnecting 1.5m lead and pre-wired plug for connection to the downlighter.

Each metal halide downlighter comes complete with a compatible control gear box.

Due to Building Regulations, the Fire Precautions Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act it is necessary to providesuitable means of escape from a building in the event of an emergency. Therefore an essential element is to provideenough light for escape. Most of Designed Architectural Lighting luminaires are available as emergency versions and areclassed as ‘self contained three hour duration’ which meet the requirements of EN 60598-1, EN 60598-2.22, and BS5266.

Luminaires generally contain an additional 12V 20W low voltage capsule lamp. Operated on a non-maintained basis thelamp comes on only in emergency mode and runs for 3 hours. A small green battery charging LED is fitted to theluminaire ceiling trim.

TECNOLINE

Tecnoline was developed in conjunction with a prestigious clientwho required a technical lighting system combining goodlighting with flexibility and ease of installation. As a result theTecnoline system comprises a robust, satin anodised aluminiumchannel extrusion that accepts, as standard, an adjustable wiresuspension.

The luminaire itself comprises a gear tray that is mounted ontothe channel via a toggle system and is connected using pre-wired through-wiring looms. The Tecnoline luminairereflector/louvre is manufactured in pre-coated semi-specularaluminium with a band of perforations at the top allowing asmall portion of uplighting.

The system is uniquely designed to minimise the number ofjoints and suspension positions in continuous installations.

Each module has integral high frequency control gear asstandard.

To meet the latest building regulations there is a growing requirement to dim and control luminaires, either individuallyor in groups, as part of an energy saving strategy. Creative lighting design solutions coupled with today's environmentalissues are elements that Designed Architectural Lighting have recognised.

In most cases luminaires can be supplied with suitable ballasts that can be controlled from a recognised lighting controlsystem; 1-10 volt analogue signal, DSI digital signal or DALI digital signal. More details can be supplied on application.

Please note that lamps have to run for 100 hours (burned in), as the lamp manufacturers’ instructions, to ensure the bestdimming qualities.

To specify dimming ballasts please add the appropriate suffix to standard catalogue number as follows:

CONTROL AND DIMMING:

Due to Building Regulations, the Fire Precautions Act, and the Health and Safety at Work Act it is necessary to providesuitable means of escape from a building in the event of an emergency. Therefore an essential element is to provideenough light for escape. Most of Designed Architectural Lighting luminaires are available as emergency versions and areclassed as ‘self contained 3 hour duration’ which meet the requirements of EN 60598-1, EN 60598-2.22, and BS5266.

Linear fluorescent luminaires are generally operated on a maintained basis where one lamp is on at all times whetherbeing operated normally from the mains supply, or from the self contained emergency control gear. A small green batterycharging LED is fitted to the luminaire.

To specify add suffix /M3 to the standard catalogue number.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

There are components available for the remote testing of the integrity of an emergency lighting system. Most can beincorporated with DAL products.

For other emergency lighting specification e.g. Static Inverter/Central Battery System and Self Test Systems. Details canbe provided on application.

The Prudential first moved into the Alfred Waterhouse designedbuilding in 1879. Situated on Holborn the Grade II listed buildingwith its imposing red brick façade was refurbished in the 1990s andincluded the development of new light fittings acceptable to EnglishHeritage. As part of the lighting package Alexandra luminaires weresupplied in various sizes to suit different areas. The project won theCity of London Heritage award in 1993.

The British Library is one of the world’s leading research libraries, and its famousheadquarters building is situated at St Pancras, between London’s King’s Cross and Eustonstations. Formally opened by HM The Queen in 1998 it houses a significant number of the150 million items held in the collection. This includes the impressive ‘King’s Library’displayed in a tall glass tower in the centre of the building. DAL designed, in closeassociation with the architect and consultant, the readers’ desk lights. These were built to‘Rolls-Royce’ standard, just one part of an exacting and detailed design brief.

Founded in the 1850s, the Victoria and Albert Museum houses the greatest and most diverse collection ofdecorative art and design in the world. Within this magnificent building are the Silver Galleries. But it is not just thebreathtaking silver collection that is on display in the recently restored rooms. The rediscovery of the Minton tilecolumns and the silver leaf ceiling design called for the re-creation of the original gasolier sunburners to completethe project. The history of the museum and gas lighting was researched closely. The final design of the replicaluminaire uses electric lamps instead of gas, and is manufactured in GRP instead of cast iron but is a sympatheticand successful interpretation of the original.

The Michelin Building, LondonArchitect: Conran Design

The Michelin Building is a favourite London landmark.Originally opened by the Michelin Tyre Company Ltd. astheir first permanent British headquarters in 1911, theglorious art nouveau façade still graces the north end ofFulham Road. In the mid 1980s the building was subject toextensive restoration and redevelopment and now housesthe well-known Bibendum (Michelin Man) Restaurant.Refurbishing the innards of the rotund Bibendum lights wasonly a small part of the DAL remit.

The UK fashion retailer French Connection is well known not just forits up-to-date clothing label, but also its controversial advertisinglogo – famously banned in Vancouver. Amongst Surrey’s leafy lanes is the new state of the art in-door-trainingcentre for Chelsea Football Club. The facilities include a high-tech hydro-pool and gym, both situated in a varied height space (3 – 9meters). To minimise the obvious maintenance problems, DAL were askedto develop a bespoke downlighter luminaire utilising long life inductionlamps (60,000 hours), and an asymmetric wall recessed linear systemusing the latest fluorescent lamps (40,000 hours). DAL also suppliedLIGHTLINE, TEMPO and METRO luminaires.

Bounded by offices, shops, bars and restaurants,intriguingly, much of Broadgate’s development ofsquares and piazzas is suspended over the tracks ofLiverpool Street Station. DAL manufactured and supplieda great number of bespoke luminaires for both theinteriors and exteriors of several buildings inthis impressive modern precinct in thebusiness district of London. At theeastern edge, on Bishopsgate, theimposing lighting columns flank thegrand steps and walkways.

The exterior lighting of Broadgate’s distinctive amalgam of stone, steel, glass and greenery has hada recent makeover. As part of an overall lighting enhancement strategy DAL joined with the designteam in the development of various luminaires both new and refurbished. Custom designed walllights, incorporating the characteristic Broadgate logo, are now part of the city landscape.

MBLD were awarded the IALD Award of Excellence 2004, and LIF Exterior Lighting Category 2004.
