She described the process that takes place in the judging room, and all the different jobs that volunteers can do in the judging room. Then she discussed all the important aspects of judging, and what the judges look for as they are selecting the winners in the various categories. DCSQ Meeting Summary - Tuesday October 11, 2016 –

Melissa Griggs, Quilt Judge, presented a wonderful informative and entertaining talk about judging at quilt shows. First, she told us that the show committee that is organizing the show determines the rules for the show, such as the categories, prize money and ribbons to be awarded, and many other details of the show, hires the judges, and gets volunteers to help the judges. See pictures of some of her quilts in this newsletter. She talked about overall appearance, color and design, construction and workmanship, quilting, and finishing as important features the judges carefully evaluate. Melissa described the arduous training required to become a certified quilt judge, and told some amusing stories about things that happened while she was serving as a volunteer, and as a judge at quilt shows. She emphasized that the judges are always very respectful and professional when judging, and provide their feedback in positive, constructive terms on the feedback forms. She encouraged all of us to enter a quilt show soon!

Community Service – Beth Kobliska

I hosted community service sewing days at my house in September and October, when we made 3 twin size t-shirt quilts and have 4 twin size French Braid quilts in process. This month we will work on baby quilt on Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19. We’ll start at 9 am at my home and sew as long as people want to stay. Just come as you are. No need to bring your sewing machine or other equipment. I can set up as many as 7 sewing machines, 2 cutting stations, and 2 ironing boards. I also have plenty of all the sewing notions we need – rotary cutters, rulers, pins and pin cushions, thread snips, etc. Stop by for a couple hours or all day. I’ll provide lunch, drinks and snacks, and of course all the fabric for these quilts. If you have ever wanted to try free motion quilting on a longarm, I'll have my Gammill set up so you can play. Please RSVP so I know how many people to expect. Dog Bed Scraps—Moratorium on Deliveries to Karen Asmundson

Two things: First, I delivered 386 pounds of fabric scraps to Wearever Recycling. It amounted to about 40 bags that I’d been accumulating since last April. Way to go everyone! You helped keep those materials out of the landfill. Second, I’d like to declare a moratorium on receiving any more dog bed scraps until the January meeting. I have a remodeling project at home and don’t want to have more stuff around than necessary. I also don’t want the scraps to get contaminated with sheet rock dust, etc. Please continue to save your fabric, batting, t-shirt and polar fleece scraps but keep them at YOUR house until after the first of the year. I’ll continue to investigate outlets for our scraps. Keep in mind that if you have a hunk of usable fabric fat quarter size or larger, it could be donated to the Quilt Show Store for resale/reuse.

Sewing Kit/purses – Gerry McBride

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the sewing kit/purses. We had a total of 38 of them made from our quilting group and they were packaged together with all kinds of sewing stuff. We also collected 93 empty medicine bottles and they were made into quick sewing kits. Someone asked me from the quilt group where they were going to be shipped and I found out that they were going to....Tanzania, Zambia, Saint Lucia, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Namibia.

December Christmas Party – Susan Skoog and Arlette Kreager

Plan for an evening of quilting camaraderie and celebrating the winter/Christmas season. Our December meeting, beginning at 6:30 PM, will be held at the Lighthouse Church 3285 144th St W, Rosemount, MN 55068. We will have our ever-popular soup and salad supper! Sign-ups for attending the supper and to bring an appetizer, fruit or vegetable salads, and desserts will be available at the November meeting. We will also be collecting Food Shelf donations. If you are unable to sign up, please email your intention to Susan Skoog at [email protected] of attendance so we can let the "caterer" know how many to prepare for.

Even if you haven’t been able to attend our monthly meetings recently, we’d love to see you in December just for the fun of getting together. And remember to bring a new or classic Christmas Quilt for show and tell for the December meeting.

Quilt Show 2017 Update

We Need you to Strip!

“Strip” your fabric that is. Yes, we need your fabric strips, yardage, those projects you just haven’t gotten to. We need them now. Remember, the quilt store is one of our main ways to raise money to bring in speakers such as Mary Fons and other nationally known speakers. The team that have volunteered to organize the store needs fabric to put together. Don’t have time to organize or cut it? Give it to us and we will take it from there. I spent 20 minutes in my sewing room and was able to come up with several treasures that I know I will never get to that I will be donating to our store. I plan on spending a few minutes each week weeding through the shelves. There are boxes in the back of the meeting room for you to place “new” fabric (2010 and newer) and “vintage” fabrics (2009 and older). Remember, we are only accepting 100% cotton quilting fabric, no polyester, upholstery or dress fabrics. Minky will be the only exception. You can also bring quilting patterns now too. Books and magazines can be dropped off at the quilt drop off day on February 9-10.
