DAIRY CALF HEALTH AND NUTRITION COURSE About the Workshop This four-part course takes dairy farmers that are already proficient in calf management to a higher level of confidence. In this course, you will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to improve calf health and increase calf survival rates within your herd. Lunch will be provided. Part 1: Newborn Calf Care (First 24 hours of Life) Date: Thursday, January 21, noon - 3 p.m. Location: Hamden Town Hall, 37029 State High- way 10, Hamden Speaker: Dr. Daryl Nydam, Professor, Cornell University • Cow and calf immunology • Disease prevention • Newborn calf care protocol • Passive transfer • Colostrum management Part 2: Nutritional Require- ments of the Preweaned Calf Date: Wednesday, February 3, noon - 3 p.m. Location: CCEDC Education Center, 34570 State Highway 10, Hamden Speaker: Dr. Mike Van Amburgh, Professor, Cornell University • Setting growth goals • Seasonal adjustments of diet • Rumen development • Starter grain selection • Milk replacer selection • Determining when to wean calves Part 3: Calf Health Date: Thursday, February 18, noon - 3 p.m. Location: On farm TBD Speaker: Dr. Robert Scrafford, State Veterinar- ian, NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets • Calf Illness: Common causes, early detection, signs/symptoms, prevention • Treatment: Tubing or placing an IV • Vaccinations • Biosecurity • Sanitation Procedures: boots, hands and instruments Part 4: Post-weaning to Breeding Age Date: Tuesday, March 2, noon - 3 p.m. Location: Hamden Town Hall Speakers: Paul Cerosaletti and April Lucas, CCEDC Extension Educators • Nutritional requirements • Housing requirements • Group management Deadline for registration is January 14.
