Hey Mr. Tiger 7Why the Cap and Gown?

Ren Dutton The cap and gown is an iconic symbol of graduation. We all wear them, but we don’t put much thought into why. It all started in the early universities in Europe during the twelfth thirteenth centuries. Scholars started wearing long hooded robes to stay warm. Since the robes were hooded they didn’t wear the caps. This robe eventually evolved into the Gown which was actually called an academic dress. The hat that was worn was called a biretta, which evolved into the cap. The top of the cap is shaped like a square. This is the same shape as a mortarboard. A mortarboard is a small square of wood or metal used for holding mortar. This sym-bolizes superiority and intelligence, and that graduates are building and moving on with their life. It also shows that they are master workmen. The schools didn’t want to have their students wearing excessive apparel, so they had all the stu-dents wear a gown as a sign of unity. Now, as we are walking down the aisle on graduation day and wondering why we are dressed in funny clothes, there will be a reason and you will know it we can be knowlegable of the reason why.

It’s The Memories That Count, Not The Thoughts

Adison Ellsworth

At some point in all of our lives, we have all heard people say, “Enjoy high school while it lasts”. Why? Be-cause the memories from high school are memories that you can’t get anywhere else. Memory is an amazing thing; we can practically go back in time and relive different moments of our lives. Since this year is coming to an end, I went around and asked different people what some of their best memories from high school were. Here are their responses:

“Ditching school” -A. C.“Parties at Zac’s house” -D. E.“Talking about FORTNITE with the boys” -C. E.“Assemblies and dances” -A. L.“One time me and a friend ditched class and drew hearts on everyone’s cars” -Anonymous“Sneaking out” -F.J.“Lake and friends” -M.W.“One word. NicMos.” -Anonymous“One time I took the wrong pill and came to school very loopy. That was a fun day.” -Anonymous

Guess That Senior Ashley Robinson

Hurricane High’s seniors are all grown up! For the most part, some of them look just like their child-hood photos, but others don’t. Some seniors are reconizable in a baby picture. While you wouldn’t know others until you were told who it is. Trying to recognize someone that you have only known through highschool can be tricky. But if you have known them for a long time, you could see the picture and know in a heartbeat. Do you think you could recognize some of Hurricane High’s senior class of 2018? Let's find out...

Senior Confessions Whitney Peterson

Here are some final confessions from seniors before they graduate. These are not things to try at home or school.

“I’ve never actually done math homework without copying from someone else.”“I pay people to do my online classes.”“If you bring almost any teacher a Diet Coke, they’ll let you off the hook for being tardy.”“I needed a ten page rough draft, so I printed the same page 8 times for points.”“My mom has done almost all of my arts projects.”“I’ve used the, ‘I was talking to Jody’ excuse many times, but I never have actually talked to Jody.”“I cheated on a chemistry test and it got ripped up in front of the class so I cried in the hallway and told him I thought it was the pretest, got to retake it.”“I called the school to excuse my absences lots of times and one time, they caught me. They called my mom to ask if she excused me but I answered the phone and said yes.”

Senior AdvicePaige Tidwell

You need to know what to expect in high school. For all incoming students, high school really isn’t that bad. I asked a few seniors, to give the incoming students advice on high school. So here's some advice from some of our seniors at HHS. Zoë Thompson said,“Don’t stress about what is happening around you. Friends will come and go; life goes on. It’s high school, have fun.” “Take every opportunity given to you! Don’t only focus on school, make sure you do the fun things. Go to dances, stomps, take fun classes and play sports or join a team. High school goes by in the blink of an eye, so make as many memories as you can.”ShaeLee Curtis said. While starting high school, become more involved. Play sports and people might notice you. School dances are also a good way of making new friends. Take as many opportunities as you can in high school. Stay involved with the school activities. “If you focus too hard on school, you will miss out on the fun moments the school year has to offer.” say Kaycee Hatch. Don’t think just about school, and make sure you have free time to go have fun. Don’t miss out on the fun moments because you’re too caught up with homework. Also, make sure you have a little bit of “me time”. Robert Johnson said, “Your time as high schoolers is limited. Don’t take time for granted, because time waits for no one.” Make your high school life as fun as you can. You’re only in high school once.

Texting and Driving!Rachell Beagley

Have you ever thought of the consequences of texting and driving? Well statistics show that the people who are most likely to cause a crash while texting and driving are teens. We are the most inexperienced. The ar-ticle “Texting and Driving Accident Statistics” states, “Approximately 660,000 drivers are attempting to use their phones while behind the wheel of an automobile… The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year.” Do you see the dangers? It has become a huge problem within the last few years. The same article states, “In 2012, 3,328 people were killed in distraction-related crashes.” This data shows that people are still texting and driving while knowing possible risks. When you’re texting and driv-ing, you’re not only putting your life in danger, but others as well. When interviewing Sid Curtis what he thought of texting and driving, he said, “It’s a selfish act when you think of the effects it can have on others.” The article “SDOT Releases 2016 Fatal Traffic Crash Data” states, “37,461 lives were lost on U.S. roads in 2016.” Most people believe that texting and driving is not bad compared to drinking and driving. The article “Texting While Driving Vs. Drunk Driving: Which Is More Dangerous?” explains, “Drivers who are texting while behind the wheel have a 23% higher chance of causing a crash. That is equivalent to downing four beers and then getting behind the wheel.” Can you believe it? Lindsey Ballard stated, “I think you are putting your life at risk as well as others and it is not worth the risk. I try my best not to text and drive, and you should too.” Do your part and put the phone away. This includes whatever it takes, like putting it in the glove box or turning it off. It’s not worth risking lives.

Journalism OverviewAshlynn Murphy

The school newspaper showcases stories of local news, school events, and national happenings. “The Daily Roar” would not be created every week. If there was not dedicated journalism editors and staff. Many students join Journalism be-cause they think it will be easier than a normal English class. This may be a little, true because there are no book reports or five page essays, but, Journalism is a class that needs hard working students. There are unforgiving deadlines, inter-viewing people, having work checked for errors an excess amount of times, working on articles after school, and much more. Every class has its good times and bad times, but journalism has more good than bad. Many students of HHS have opinion that Journalism is the “it” class to apply for. However, if a student is going for the Regent’s Scholarship the Journalism class will not help with that. If the HHS student just needs another English credit or elective, then this is a spectacular class to put on your schedule. Anyone who enjoys writing should also sign up for the journalism class. Writ-ing articles for the school paper is the best way to have your voice heard by the student body. Also, the paper is not just for the students, it is for the faculty and staff. Even the lunch ladies, office ladies, and librarians love reading the school paper. Kristy Murphy, the lunch clerk, said that she loves reading “The Daily Roar” during her pre-lunch break at work. The people of Hurricane High School are grateful that the journalism class and the school newspaper is alive and well. Keep the school paper going by signing up for journalism class!

The FFA Organization Overview Savannah Bristol

This year was filled with many experiences that have shaped the lives of everyone! From the Music Department, to the English and Math Departments and even the sporting events. But the one experience that not everyone is aware of is the amazing FFA group. FFA is an organization that gets people involved with the environment. Many activities result in tak-ing care of animal, plants, or mechanical tools used for farming. There are so many more experiences, but only an individual can decide for themself what was the best experience. Morgan Staples commented, “ My favorite would have to be going to State Convention. What was expected for State CDE’s and then going to the dance and interact with schools from all over Utah.” Lindsey Ballard, Secretary in FFA, said, “All of it? The members, the trips and the memories! Sure there were rocky parts, but I would not trade it for the world!” FFA is not just an experience that prepares everyone for what their life may be, but it gives everyone a friend. Some of the greatest people are in our school’s FFA.

Dear Mr. Tiger, Graduation is coming up, and I need to know what is after high school. Is this the end? AnonymousDear Anonymous, The first thing to know is that high school never ends. Class of 2018!As you reflect upon this past year, I hope that you can look back with fondness on the great experiences you have had, and rec-ognize the ways that you have grown and changed. BE THE CHANGE has been our theme this year, and I have seen many great changes in each of you! Life is a process of changing and transforming as we are faced with challenging experiences. As we face these experiences head on and work hard to get through them, we improve, grow, and become better people! You are dif-ferent people than you were when you began this year! You are changing and transforming. You are different because you have been impacted by great teachers, counselors, coaches, advisors, secretaries, custodians, friends, and others! You have changed because you have worked hard, because you have risked, be-cause you have challenged yourself and tried new things, and sacrificed. You are different because you have been a part of this Tiger family! So now what?! Now, take what you have learned and what you are becoming and BE THE CHANGE in this world wherever you go and whatever you do! Go make me proud! I love you all so much! -Jody
