Pastor’s Column
Joke of the Week!! There was one boy in class who struggled to learn. One day the teachers asked him who signed the Declaration of Inde-pendence, and of course, he did not know.
The teacher asked him every day for a week but still he could not give the right answer.
Finally, in desperation, she called the boy’s father to come and see her. She said to him, “Your boy will not tell me who signed the Declaration of Independence.”
The father said to his son, “Come here boy and sit down.”
The boy did as he was told and then his dad said to him, “Now if you signed that stupid thing, just admit it so we can get out of here.”

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family: A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,
SAINT OF THE WEEK
SAINT MARIA GUADALUPE GARCIA ZAVALA
(1878-1963)
Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala was born in Jalisco, Mexico. At
the age of twenty-three she broke off an engagement, convinced
that Jesus was calling her to serve the poor. When her spiritual
director described his intention to form a religious congregation
devoted to the sick poor, Maria agreed to join him. In 1901, after
attracting other women, they cofounded the Handmaids of St.
Margaret Mary Alacoque and the Poor, and set up a small hospi-
tal. Maria, also known as “Mother Lupita,” served as Superior
General. The congregation steadily grew. On top of her adminis-
trative duties - eleven foundations were established in Mexico
during her lifetime - Maria devoted herself to nursing her pa-
tients, attending to both their physical and spiritual needs. Wish-
ing to be “poor with the poor,” she did not hesitate, when funds
ran short, to beg in the streets. The Mexican Revolution was fol-
lowed by a long period of anti-Catholic persecution. To continue
their work, Maria and her sisters were forced for some years to
put aside their religious habits. She risked her life by hiding
priests and even the archbishop of Guadalajara in her hospital.
Eventually the storm passed, and she was widely recognized for
her service to all in need. She died after a long illness on June 24,
1963. She was canonized in 2013.
“With deep faith, unlimited hope and great love for Christ,
Mother ‘Lupita’...lived the motto which she left to her daughters:
‘Charity to the point of sacrifice and perseverance unto death’.”
- St. Pope John Paul II
Prayer for Independence Day
God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the
memory of those who declared that life and liberty are
your gift to every human being. Help us to continue a
good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our
will strong: that only in human solidarity will we find lib-
erty, and justice only in the honor that belongs to every
life on earth. Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:
to understand the ways of others, to offer friendship, and
to find safety only in the common good of all. We ask this
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Missionary Appeal Sunday - July 11 & 12 for
THE APOSTLES OF DIVINE CHARITY (CHARITAN MISSIONARIES)
Who We Are:
The Apostles of Divine Charity is a male Religious Association founded and headquartered in the Diocese of Obala, Cameroon
(Central Africa), with the consent of the Lord Bishop Sosthene Leopold Bayemi Matjei, Bishop of the Diocese of Obala. The Apos-
tles of Divine Charity was founded exclusively to help the poor and serve their needs. Our mission is primarily centered in our pro-
found concern for the poor and the needy, especially those who are given less or zero attention attention in their communities. Our
mission is to help this class of people reinstate their sense of value, and help them become more cognizant of their relevance to hu-
man society, to themselves, their families, and to God. Our intention is to offer counseling to them, understand their needs, provide
education to them, and discern the best ways of helping them become better persons, for the sake of God’s Kingdom. Making visible
and practical the Mercy and the Love of God through the Works of Charity and by the means of the Corporal Works of Mercy is the
major ingredient of our mission. Our utmost desire is to be the mouthpiece of God and “another Christ” to the poor and the needy.
We are thus far limited to working in Cameroon. However, some of our seminarians do their studies in Nigeria.

Specific Means of Fulfilling our Mission:
1. Education: Providing education to children and youth who have interest to go to
school but have no one to support them. We also offer adult education to inter-
ested adults who did not have the opportunity to receive formal education when
they were younger due to poverty and lack of money.
2. Healthcare Provision: Providing health care services to the people of God is also
an integral means of fulfilling our Charitan mission.
3. Youth Apostolate: We are also into active youth apostolate aimed at providing
moral and religious education to the youth.
4. Orphanage Ministry: Ministering to the orphans and the vulnerable children
occupies a very important place in our charism. We have orphanage centers where
we provide shelter, food, clothing, and sound education to the homeless, orphans
and indigent children.
5. Caring for Retired Priests/Religious and Elderly People: We also extend our
apostolate to priests and religious who are retired or inactive due to their health
conditions or other reasons, and elderly people whose family members are not
able to care for them.
6. Home Visitations: Through our house-to-house visitation apostolate, we are ex-
posed to the needs of the community that we serve. By having healthy interactions
with the people, we stand a better chance of getting to know them and the pastoral
needs they have.
7. Parish Work: We are also open to running as many parishes as assigned to us by
the local ordinary. At our parishes, we strive to be priests and servants to the peo-
ple of God. In other words, the spiritual and pastoral needs of the parishioners are
our priority.

June 20-21, 2020 - Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL CONTINUES THIS WEEKEND As we continue to adjust to new circumstances in our lives, God reminds us that even in the most impossible of situations God’s
promise remains. In the first reading a woman of influence, who has no children and is growing older, is promised a son by the
prophet Elisha in response to her kindness and hospitality. Simple gifts that give birth to great joy. Often in times of hardship and
loss, our hearts become more open to God’s grace, creating a stronger awareness of our dependence on His loving concern. St. Paul
makes clear that we will pass through death with Christ to a newness of life. We have died with Christ in baptism, and we live with
him. He puts it simply: think of it as being dead to sin, living for God. St. Matthew illuminates this perspective with the message that
even a simple cup of cold water for a child is a gesture that will not be forgotten, in fact, will be greatly rewarded. The Annual
Catholic Appeal resumes this weekend with an invitation to make a gift that will help many who have been impacted by the Covid
19 outbreak in our archdiocese. Unafraid, we make sacrifices for others, not because they are Catholic, but because We Are Catholic!

Spread the Gospel - The Good News of
Jesus & His St. Anthony Family!
A Holy Community through Holy Communion.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I
will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our
Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter
from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do
not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Con-
necting these two messages might help us on our faith
journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we
must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering
and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone,
for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by our-
selves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the
Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for
worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us re-
member that we can share that burden with our Christian
sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest.

ADULT FAITH GROUP
All Are Welcome To Join Us!
Sundays - 11:30 A.M. in the Cafeteria
Parishioners,
My husband, Robert Hawkins and I ( Judy) have
been facilitating an Adult Faith Group here at St.
Anthony’s going on six years now. We meet on
Sundays at St. Anthony’s currently in the 7th
Grade Classroom to abide by the CDC Guidelines
and the Room has air-conditioning. During this
time we have been Zooming the Group. It has been
a blessing to stay connected. This past Sunday was
our first in person gathering since mid March. You
might ask yourself; what is this Adult and Forma-
tion Group all about? We come together in prayer
and study. We share God Moments and lift each
other up with prayer Intentions. We study with dif-
ferent books to enrich our Faith. Currently, we are
studying; Come Alive In Jesus written by Bishop
Herman. He encourages us to always go to the Fa-
ther through Our Holy Mother, the Church. We
learn, we pray, we laugh and sometimes we cry.
We invite the Holy Spirit to be our Guide. If you
are thirsty to learn more about your Faith; please
consider joining the Group. Anyone 18 years or
older is encouraged to attend. Remember, your
walk in Faith is your personal journey. Together
we grow in virtue and in love. We meet every Sun-
day except the 3rd Sunday of the Month.
Love and Peace to All,
Judy & Robert Hawkins
