LEE KUAN YEW WATER PRIZE 2011HONOURING OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS SOLVING GLOBAL WATER PROBLEMS

The highlight of the Singapore International Water Week, the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize recognises outstanding contributions towards addressing global water challenges by either applying revolutionary technologies or implementing innovative policies and programmes that benefit humanity. This prestigious international award is named after Singapore’s former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who through his foresight and leadership, has enabled Singapore to attain sustainable water supply.

Dr James L. Barnard is awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2011 for his invention of the Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) technology to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from used water. His technology uses naturally-occurring micro-organisms to remove these nutrients and allows the treated used water to be safely returned to rivers and lakes.

More sustainable and environmentally-friendly than traditional chemical treatments, BNR protects and maintains the water quality of lakes and rivers. It also helps to promote the recycling of water. All BNR systems used worldwide today were developed from Dr Barnard’s technology.

Nominations for Lee Kuan Yew Water Prize 2012 are now open until 31 October 2011.
