Reactions in Aqueous Solutions
Net ionic equations
In double replacement reactions, not all ions participate in the reaction
Double replacement reactions result in the formation of a precipitate
Ions that don’t participate are called spectator ions
Can write equations to show which ions participate
Called net ionic equations
Rules for writing net ionic equations
1. Write out the equation and separate all the ions with their charges
1. Be sure to include the state of matter for each ion2. Everything that is aqueous is separated3. Solids, liquids, and gases stay in their respective
compounds4. If water is produced, it is not split up
2. Cross out ions that are seen in both the reactants and products.
3. Rewrite the equation to include only the ions that participate in the reaction
Practice problems
Aqueous solutions of potassium iodide and silver nitrate are mixed forming the precipitate silver iodide
Aqueous solutions of aluminum chloride and sodium hydroxide are mixed forming the precipitate aluminum hydroxide.
