Reveal Meal October 27, 2019
12:00 NOON
Losing to Win
For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.
What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves?
-Jesus (Luke 9:24-25)
I believe it was martyred missionary Jim Elliot who, commenting on the above words of Jesus, wrote,
“He is no fool who gives up what he can’t keep, to keep what he cannot lose.”
The Gospel makes it clear that we are confused and deceived about what will give us the life and
security we are looking for. We are prone to grasp all the wrong things, so certain they are the elusive brass
ring. Christ is not the least bit ambiguous when he tells us that we must lose our lives; we must die to our
own way of seeking fulfillment, if we are to ever really discover it. But it is in this dying that we are reborn to
live. When we let go of the paltry, deceived existence that we have called life, it’s then that our eyes are
finally opened to the real life that is already ours in Christ. There is life, with a capital L; a rich meaningful
experience that never ends, and we can never lose.
As I begin my twelfth appointment year at Galloway, I want to thank our Staff Parish Relations
Committee, fellow staff, and congregation for the opportunity for sabbatical rest and renewal
this fall. A sabbatical allows a pastor to step out of their daily routine in order to experience
time for rest and professional growth. My brother Eric (who serves as pastor of the Mooreville
charge) and I received a Ridgway study grant through the Methodist Foundation to travel to
Turkey, Greece, and Italy. We will follow parts of Paul’s missionary journeys and research the
formation of the creeds. I depart following the worship services on August 18 and will return to Galloway in
October with a renewed and refreshed spirit to share
what I have learned and once again fully participate in
the vision and ministry of our congregation.
VBS was a huge success this year. The kids "powered up" their relationship with God by learning about Abram, Josiah, John the Baptist, and Jesus. They enjoyed fun snacks, played exciting games, listened to meaningful stories, and created crafts they can keep for years to come. VBS would not have been the success it was without all of our amazing volunteers. Thank you to everyone who donated items and time to help create a meaningful experience for our children!

GALLOWAY’S MONTHLY LUNCHEON AND PROGRAM THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2019
11:30 a.m. - Lunch is served for $8 per person
12 Noon - Program begins
Special Announcement for our Luncheon:
Fannye Cook, through her present-day medium Cathy Shropshire, has temporarily lost her voice, and she is going to have to postpone her performance at Galloway.
The good news is that there's another voice to speak with authority all about the wonderful life of Mississippi's most significant conservationist, Fannye Cook. Libby Hartfield, now retired, is the longest service director of the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science - Fannye A. Cook Memorial. A biologist and science educator, Libby is the co-editor of " Fannye Cook: Mississippi's Conservation Pioneer," and she is the coordinator for Wildlife Mississippi's Fannye Cook Natural Area in Rankin County. Libby's presentation is a perfect prologue to the life of Miss Cook which will be followed up with a rescheduled performance (date to be determined) of Cathy Shropshire's, "Pursuing a Dream - Protecting Mississippi's Natural Heritage."
RSVP with April Vestal at 601-353-9691 or [email protected] by Monday, August 5, to reserve your spot.
“Hi to all of my Galloway family! My name is Leslie Norris and I will be an intern this upcoming fall. You may have seen me around before! I’ve attended the later service on Sunday mornings as much as my schedule has permitted for the past two school years, but am excited to become much more involved and active. Since I just cannot wait to delve into relationships with you and serve you, I wanted to go ahead and semi-introduce myself with a couple quick facts. I will be a junior at Millsaps College this fall. I play softball there and am majoring in Communication Studies while minoring in Christian Studies, Creative Writing and VESO. I’m also involved in groups such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Millsaps Christian Fellowship (MCF) and Wesley Connexion. After graduating, I plan to pursue a Master’s Degree in Divinity and complete the ordination process. When I’m not busy with school and softball, I love to catch up on sleep, hike, grab food with my friends, play with my pets and go to visit my family in Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout this internship, I plan on working in several different areas within the church. I hope to shadow some of your awesome staff members in order to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes, help out with mission and outreach projects such as Grace Place, work on various communication projects, and most of all continually pray for all of you, pray for guidance as I discern what exact area of ministry I can be most effective in, and pray for opportunities to contribute to your great congregation. Thank you for already embracing and encouraging me – see you soon!!!”
ACOLYTE TRAINING AVAILABLE
“I am the light of world, whoever follows me will never walk in the darkness
but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
We are looking for more acolytes to add to Galloway’s rotation list for
the 11:00am service. This is such a great way for your child to serve
God and participate in worship. Whether your child lights candles,
carries the cross, or is a banner bearer or Gospel bearer, they are
considered an acolyte. In accepting this position, your child will be
serving as a companion to your Pastor: performing a number of
important functions before, during, and at the close of the worship
service. Your child, therefore, is a minister of Galloway bringing to
each worship service a special ministry.
Please contact the worship arts office for more information.
12 MONTHS OF GRACE PLACE GIVING

On Tuesday, August 20 all interested women are invited to go to the MCH campus to tour a refurbished cottage and to hear details about a new ministry- “The Two of Us”. This is a ministry for foster girls who become pregnant and want to keep their babies.
We will meet at Galloway in the gathering area at 10:00 to ride in the Galloway van and personal vehicles if necessary. If you want to meet us at MCH, the campus is located at 805 North Flag Chapel Road just off Northside Drive in west Jackson.

See you there!
Sharon Davis, Mission and Outreach Director
Reflections from the Okatoma Trip
Our students had a wonderful time Wednesday July 10th kayaking down the Okatoma River in Seminary, MS!
This was a time of bonding and fellowship. This event is something that our students look forward to every year,
and has become a hallmark of our Student Ministry.
College End of Summer Cookout
We invite all college students (Undergraduate and Graduate) to join us for an end of the
summer cookout on Wednesday, August 7 at 4:30 p.m., at the Cook’s lake house. For more
information please contact [email protected].
Youth Fall Bible Study
Our Fall Bible Study will kick off August 14, 2019. We invite all students 7th - 12th
grade to join us for a time of fellowship and Bible study. Location TBA.
Losing The Blues in Memphis
Our youth planned to attend Beach Camp
in Biloxi, MS but Tropical Storm Barry
changed those plans. Instead our youth
journeyed up to Memphis on Saturday,
July 13th for a time of bonding, fellowship,
and fun. The highlight of the trip was a
visit to the Memphis Zoo and bowling
later that night.
GALLOWAY IS A
STEPHEN MINISTRY
CONGREGATION
We all experience challenges
in life, and there are times
when we could benefit from
the support of a caring Christian friend.
Stephen Ministers are ready to provide
one-to-one, emotional and spiritual care we
need when faced with a crisis such as the loss
of a loved one, hospitalization, divorce or
separation, unemployment or a job crisis,
terminal illness, incarceration, recovery after an
accident or disaster, and many other life
challenges. If you are interested in receiving
confidential Christian care from a Stephen
Minister, please contact Cary Stockett, Emily
Sanford or Susan Richards.
Grief takes many forms;
the loss through death of
a loved one, health or
caregiving issues, job
loss, life changes such as
the empty nest, and
many other transitions.
Galloway’s grief group is
a safe place to process grief with others,
and to know that you are not alone.
Facilitated by counselor and Stay-Home
Hospice Chaplain, Julie Orr, this group
meets once a month. The next meeting
will take place on Monday, August 5,
5:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Parlor. If you need
more information, please contact Susan
Richards at 601-326-3447.
CRAFT MINISTRY NEWS:
Monday craft night will resume on August 12.
We will continue working on the scarf project
for breast cancer patients. We would like to
have a significant number of scarves to donate,
and are continuing this project for one more
month. Join us as we support this segment of
our community.
Sewing skills are not required to be a part of this
special project. We have something for all skill
levels. If you want to learn to sew, come join us
as we stitch straight seams on these scarves.
Perhaps you would rather cut the fabric for
those who sew or press the scarves once they
are turned.
Join us from 5:30 to 7:30 in room 350.
There will be the usual snack supper. For
questions, contact Johnnye Catherine Bradford
at 601-898-4303.
LAMPLIGHTERS
Lamplighters are Galloway members who visit
our senior adults who are home-bound or
living in senior living facilities. It just takes one
visit per month followed up with a phone call
or card to your special person to let them
know that we remember them and love them.
Your visits are meaningful, and they help
Galloway to stay in touch with our members.
The next Lamplighter meeting will take place
on Wednesday, August 21 at 1:00 p.m. in the
Parlor. Contact Susan Richards, Bill Lipscomb
or Trudy Lipscomb to volunteer for this
important ministry.

WELCOME
New Members
JaLease and Walter Roberts
We are excited to formally join the Galloway family as members. We
feel a close bond with this congregation and have been overwhelmed
with the support and kind words that we have received from the
members of this congregation. JaLease joined the Galloway family by
way of New Life Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church (Monticello, MS),
and I joined by way of Evans Chapel United Methodist Church (Belzoni,
MS). We look forward to continuing our rejoicing during times of
celebration, and grieving in times of sorrow with our Galloway family.
We remain excited about all that God has in store for the Student
Ministry here, and look forward to growing in relationship with Christ
in this congregation.
Ruth Hobbs
We welcome to Galloway, Mrs. Ruth Hobbs, the mother of Falvia
Plumpp-Roberts. She was a member of the United Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) until her church closed recently. Mrs. Hobbs served
for many years on the local, state and national level and until her local
church's closing, served faithfully as a deacon, preparing communion
each Sunday, joyfully writing litanies and reading scripture.
Even at the age of 104, she continues to support Southern Christian
Services for Children and Youth, one of the organizations that she
founded in the 1980's, by her prayers, presence and gifts. Miss Ruth
(as friends at Galloway affectionately call her), will, most assuredly, be
looking for a place to serve in her new home church.
