Administrative History

The Daily Mining Gazette is a newspaper published in Houghton, Michigan. The paper is also distributedover most of the Upper Peninsula and some northern parts of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It is adaily Monday through Friday, with an expanded, combined Saturday-Sunday edition. The Gazette wasestablished by J.R. Devereaux as a weekly in 1858 under the name Portage Lake Mining Gazette. Theoffice was sold to Henry Mckenzie in 1860 and he continued as the publisher and editor until he soldthe office back to J.R. Devereaux in 1870. The paper was changed to a daily when the operation of theGazette was taken over by W.G. Rice in 1899. Rice served as editor until his death in 1941. The editorposition was then passed onto his son Jack. In 1941 the Gazette began publishing in two editions, theCalumet News, which was an evening paper and Evening News Journal and in Houghton as the morningedition Portage Lake Mining Gazette until 1943. In 1943 two years after the onset of World War II theMining Gazette Company suffered a personnel shortage had to consolidate the Portage Lake MiningGazette and the Calumet News into the Mining Gazette. In 1981 the Superior national Bank in Hancocktook ownership of the publication after the death of owner and publisher, Mildred Rice. The Gazette waspurchased in 1982 by the Thompson Newspapers of Canada and changed hands again in 1996 when itwas purchased by the Ogden Newspapers of Wheeling, Virginia.

Black-and-white photographs, color photographs, and negatives taken by both Daily Mining Gazette andAssociated Press photographers for publication. Covers local, national, and international subjects andevents.

Arrangement

MS-051 is arranged into two series: 1.Photographs and 2. Negatives. Series one is further divided into twosubseries: 1.1 Photographs Arranged Chronologically and 1.2 Photographs Arranged by Subject.

Acquisition

An initial donation consisting of 2 paige boxes of records and photographs was made to the MichiganTechnological University Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections on December 6, 1979 byRobert Skuggen. Half of a manuscript box of photographs was separated into MS-051: Daily MiningGazette Photograph Collection and the remainder of the contents became MS-587: Daily Mining GazetteRecords Collection. An additional accession of 69 boxes was received by the Archives from RobertSkuggen April 14, 1981. Twenty-four of the boxes consisted of photographs that were added to MS-051.The remainder of the boxes contained records which were added to MS-587.
