This is a sensual wine with depth and a decent, dry finish. 2012 Extra Special Chablis, Domaine de la Levée, Burgundy, France £9.75, Asda Chablis can often feel thin and mean on the palate, but this elegant version from Asda is a textural delight. With meadow flower and faint brioche notes on the nose and a sleek, cool palate, it is a very impressive wine indeed. 2013 The Gum, Single Vineyard Pinot Grigio, Adelaide Hills, South Australia £9.99, Marks & Spencer The Gum is one of my favourite wines on the high street. It’s made by The Lane Vineyard, which is among Australia’s most distinguished estates, and it’s an absolute steal at a tenner. It’s total class, with Zen-like citrus precision. 2012 Zalze, Reserve Chenin Blanc, Coastal Region, South Africa £10, Sainsbury’s The lemon-zest liveliness in this cheeky chenin is refreshing and it’s perfect with fish dishes and salads. South Africa leads the rest of the world in bargain-priced, dry chenin blancs, and Zalze is one of the best. 2013 Peter Yealands, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand £10.25, down to £7.69 until 10 June, Sainsbury’s Peter Yealands runs a huge winery in New Zealand’s sauvignon blanc capital, Marlborough. His newest release has elderflower and passion fruit notes on the nose and a perky, tangy finish. 2013 La Grille, Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, Loire, France £8.99, down to £6.74 each when you buy 2 until 30 June, Majestic The La Grille range is a good one and this benchmark sauvignon blanc has all of the required raciness and zip on the palate to prick your senses and enliven your taste buds. 2013 Waitrose Sauvignon Blanc, Villa Maria, Marlborough, New Zealand £10.49, down to £7.85 from 18 June to 5 July, Waitrose The most awarded winery in NZ, Villa Maria makes this sauvignon – and it is a work of art. The near-tropical nose and gooseberry freshness on the finish make it a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. 2013 Longview, Whippet Sauvignon Blanc, Adelaide Hills, South Australia £13, Oddbins Wines from Adelaide Hills taste closer to the Loire sauvignon model than to Marlborough in New Zealand. This beauty is alluring in the glass and impossible to put down once you’ve tasted its citrus charms. 2013 Gavi di Gavi, Ascheri, Piemonte, Italy £14, down to £12 until 10 June, Sainsbury’s Matteo Ascheri makes stellar wines with flavours that we crave. This chic gavi is catwalk stunning with lashings of apple and pear and a grapefruit tang on the finish. You really must taste this incredible treat. OAKED 2012 Gewurztraminer, Cave de Turckheim, Alsace, France £10.49, Waitrose The gewurz grape is the most aromatic of all, with rose petal, exotic spices and musk. This is a terrific example, with a rich palate but a zesty finish balancing the decadent scent perfectly. Throw a chicken tikka at it and see it rise to the challenge. 2013 Tim Adams, Riesling, Clare Valley, South Australia £10.79, Tesco This wine has been a mainstay on the Tesco shelves for aeons. Tim ‘Bonecrusher’ Adams (he has a very strong handshake) is a magician with the riesling variety. The racy, lemony, uplifting fruit is gripping, dry and classy. NV Finest Prosecco, Bisol, Veneto, Italy £8.99, Tesco Perfectly balanced and fresh, this prosecco is made by the Bisol company – the darling of Milan’s fashionistas. The bubbles are creamy, and it’s a must for summer entertaining. 2012 Taste The Difference Conegliano Prosecco, Superiore Brut, Veneto, Italy £10, down to £7.50 until 10 June, Sainsbury’s The smaller the bubbles, the finer the wine, and this prosecco is more like a frothy mousse than a hectic bubble frenzy, such is the finesse in the glass. Make sure you’re at the front of the queue to buy it. 2012 Rabl, Grüner Veltliner, Kamptal, Austria £8.99, Marks & Spencer Grüner veltliner is a trendy grape right now and this inexpensive wine shows exactly why. Take a holiday from sauvignon blanc and bathe your palate in this elegantly spicy, stone fruit and lemongrass- scented, dry white. 2013 The Ned, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand From £10.65, Waitrose, Majestic The Ned has rocketed in fame in the last few years and this 2013 vintage shows why that is. The wine is bursting with lime leaf and passion fruit notes, and the finish is icicle sharp. 2012 Bourgogne Blanc, Château des Jacques, Louis Jadot, Burgundy, France £14.99, down to £12.74 each when you buy 2 until 1 September, Majestic From one of the most reliable names in Burgundy, this crunchy, bright chardonnay is a wine for sophisticated dinner parties. It will age well, too, for up to four years. 2012 L’Etoile de Begude, Limoux, France £17.99, down to £13.49 each when you buy 2 until 1 September, Majestic The Kinglakes moved to Limoux in the South of France several years ago and they make ravishing white wines. The cool but sunny conditions are perfect for chardonnay, and 2012 Etoile is their finest yet. 2011 Robert Oatley, Finisterre Chardonnay, Margaret River, Western Australia £18.99, Waitrose With perfect density, well-judged oak selection and a long finish, this is a diva of a chardonnay. The great winemaker Larry Cherubino ensures that Robert Oatley wines over- deliver with every single sip. 2011 Saskia, Miles Mossop, Coastal Region, South Africa £20, Oddbins Made from chenin blanc, viognier, verdelho and clairette, Saskia keeps your palate on tenterhooks. The layers of stone fruit, tropical nose, oily, mouth-coating palate and zesty finish are unlike any other wine. 2013 Torres, Viña Sol, Catalonia, Spain From £6.69, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons, Co-op If you’re looking for a low-priced ‘house white’ for picnics and alfresco parties then dive into this innocent, citrus- scented cracker. Drink it with everything – the Spanish eat all manner of tapas with this wine. 2013 Jim Barry, The Lodge Hill Riesling, Clare Valley, South Australia £12.49, down to £10.62 each when you buy 2 until 1 September, Majestic This is one of my 100 Best Australian Wines of the year (see www.matthew jukes.com). The laser-driven purity of lime and wild flower fruit in this wine is epic – so load up! 2013 Paul Cluver, Ferricrete Riesling, Elgin, South Australia £12.99, Marks & Spencer Elgin is renowned for crunchy, elegant whites and silky pinot noirs. This picturesque region is home to a number of wonderful wineries, and Paul Cluver is one of its most famous estates. Beautifully fragrant and sherbety, this is an epic riesling. 2013 Earth’s End, Central Otago Riesling, New Zealand £12.99, Marks & Spencer The ‘Haka’ label on Earth’s End is magnificent and there’s a huge sense of humour behind the scenes because the winemaker is Duncan Forsyth, the hippest dude in NZ. Lime juice purity and a sherbety texture make this wine adorable. 2013 Wolf Blass, Yellow Label Chardonnay, Australia £9.99, Morrisons, Waitrose, Asda Medium-weight and juicy, this is one of Australia’s tiptop, flagship, commercial chardonnays. The 2012 vintage is often on promotion for £7.49 so watch out for that, too. 2012 Finest Saint Mont, South-West France £6.99, down to £5.99 until 10 June, Tesco Made from the rare grape varieties gros manseng, arrufiac and courbu (you don’t hear about these fellows every day!), this is a fascinating wine with a pink grapefruit and rose petal nose and a dry, green apple finish. 2011 Finest Blanquette de Limoux Brut, 1531, South of France £10.49, reduced to £8.49 until 10 June, Tesco Apparently this is the oldest sparkling wine in the world. The monks of the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire, who invented it in 1531, knew a thing or two! It has a resealable cap and is still made using the ‘classic’ method. 2006 McWilliams, Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia £8.99, Tesco This is one of the greatest dry semillons in the world and it’s low alcohol (10.5%).
