Text features help organize and present information. Bold print and italics are text features that help you scan

a text to find important information quickly.

Read the text below. Then, fill in the blanks.



All living things require nitrogen but use it in different forms. Nitrogen gas, nearly 78% of the air we breathe, is 1 form. However, not all living things can use nitrogen gas from the air. The process in which nitrogen changes forms is called the nitrogen cycle.

Nitrogen gets in the soil through precipitation and decomposing organic matter. Decomposers, such as worms and bacteria, break down organic matter to help nitrogen get back into the soil.

Special bacteria that live in soil and water do most of the nitrogen fixation, or converting nitrogen gas into ammonia. Ammonia is a form of nitrogen used by some plants. Other bacteria convert nitrogen to nitrates, a form other plants can use. Still others, called denitrifying bacteria, convert nitrogen to nitrates, denitrifying back to nitrogen gas.

Plants use nitrogen to build structures like leaves and flowers. Animals get nitrogen by eating plants and use it to build muscle, skin, nerves, and other structures.

A heading is a type of text feature. A heading shows the key or main idea for each section of a text.

A force is a push or a pull on an object. Forces can cause objects to move, stop, or change direction. For example, when you hit a baseball, your bat puts a force on the ball and causes it to change direction.

Friction is a force that resists, or goes against, the motion of 2 objects in contact with each other. When you walk, friction helps your shoes grip the ground. For example, it’s hard to walk on ice. There is less friction because the ice is smooth.

Gravity is a force that pulls everything down toward the ground. Without it, you and every other object would fly off the surface of the Earth. Objects on Earth have weight because of the force of gravity. In space, where there is little gravity, astronauts experience weightlessness and can float. Gravity is also responsible for ocean tides and the motion of the Earth around the Sun.

Magnetism is a force that attracts, or pulls toward, and repels, or pushes away, certain metal objects. Objects that have the property of magnetism are called magnets.
