JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSDear New Player:

By Marti Ronemus

I overheard youcomplaining in therestaurant this morningabout your trials andtribulations. You wererelating how badly youplayed a few hands, howyour partner wouldn’tknow what to lead if itwere outlined in neon, and

that someone called the Bridge Police (aka, thetournament director) on you. You were fussingthat North-South got all the cards, and that thesedarn computer hands were awful.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t work up anysympathy. If you want to hear about a really badday, read on.

This is a True Story from the Las VegasNABC, many years ago. Gary and I were stillunder 20 MPs, but as I told you yesterday, wewere hooked, and all vacations were now plannedaround tournament locations.

We were playing in our third session of theday. Now, I have a confession to make. I canbarely get through two sessions, even now. Two-thirds of the way through the second session, Ibegin to lose all interest and focus. I want asnack, some gossip, a place to put my feet up,some shopping. Can you imagine how bad I amby the third session?

So, anyway, here we were in our third sessionof the day. Gary was alert, bright-eyed andbushy-tailed. I was having an out-of-bodyexperience. I played a hand in notrump, forgetting I was in diamonds. I passed out of turn.I spilled water on the opponents. The directorwas so nice.

Then I pulled the wrong card out of my hand.“Director!” The director was still kind as couldbe, explained all the various options, and left. Heshould have just parked a chair at our table. Nottwo tricks later, didn’t I do the same thing?

“Director!” Same director, samekindness, perhaps the teensiestbit strained.

I was so tired, I was havingtrouble seeing, and two dealslater, I did it again. Everyone atthe table was looking in disgust. After all, how hard is it todetach the right card from yourhand and play it? This time, thecall was loud and angry, andeven the wonderful director hada hard edge to his voice.

I burst into tears, left thetable in the middle of the roundand ran into the nearest ladies’room, crying hard. My plan wasto hide in a cubicle, sneak outunder cover of dark, dye myhair and skulk home. Garywould know I was gone whenhe saw the missing suitcase.

Next thing I heard was myhusband inside the ladies’ room, calling for me. “Come out ofthere, Marti. Don’t try to hide. Iknow your shoes!”

“No! I’m quitting thisgame. Everyone is laughing atme. The director was upset. Those people were smirking! Igive up!”

I heard a woman say, “Mustbe one of those bridge players.”I heard the ladies’ room attendantencouraging my husband toleave. “Marti, come out now orwe’ll have to forfeit! Listen, people surviveparachute jumps when the chute doesn’t open.”

“I’m too embarrassed to ever leave thisrestroom. Bring me food and a double scotch.Maybe I’ll come out then.”

“If you don’t come out right now, I’m goingto rip the door off.” My husband is a verypowerful man. This was a real possibility.“Besides,” he encouraged, “You’ll never see these

Cartoons from GO AHEAD! LAUGH by Jude Goodwin. Publishedby Master Point Press and available at the book tables.

people again.” Well, that made sense. I came out,sat down and played the next hand like a good girl. The game eventually ended, we went to the bar, Ihad a sandwich and a drink. Then we went to playin a Midnight Speedball game and got more points.

P.S. What happens in Vegas does not stay inVegas. The news of my misadventures beat mehome. Sheesh.

Bidding commentary: North, with sixpotential club tricks, has an automatic raise to3NT even without the ♠Q.

Lead commentary: West, with two relativelyequal-strength suits, selects the major. Why?

When responder does not use Stayman, responder figures to have minor-suit length.

Play commentary: As declarer, win trickone with the ♥Q, not the jack. With two equals, take the trick with the higher equal. It is far moredeceptive. If you win the ♥Q, West can't tellwho has the jack. East's play of the 10 does notdeny the jack, but it does deny the queen. If youtake the trick with the jack, you tell West youhave the queen. Don't be so friendly. Next issue:Being wide open in diamonds, should you try tosteal your ninth trick by leading a low spade attrick two, or run the clubs and hope for adiscarding error? Choices, choices, choices.

Defensive commentary: If declarer runsclubs, East discards three spades and a heart, nodiamonds! Discard losers, keep potentialwinners! West, who knows partner needs the ♦Ato defeat the contract (otherwise declarer hasnine tricks), discards two spades, a heart and the♦7. When a spade is eventually led, West winsand shifts to a low diamond, asking for adiamond return. East wins and returns the ♦4,original fourth best, and the contract is defeated. If South leads a low spade at trick two, Westmust apply the rule of "unattended suits." What'sthat? When a long powerful suit in dummy is leftunattended, assume declarer has the missinghonor. If so, South must be stealing a ninth trick.West jumps up with the ♠A, and shifts to a lowdiamond. Down one.

Irene Williams of Elk Point SD considers her bidduring the Walter Miller II 0-5 Pairs on Friday. The 9-year-old has been playing bridge for 15months and was attending her first NABC. Hertake on bridge: “It’s a fun game.”

Did You Know? Many players wonder how the game we play

came to be called bridge. Some theorize that it arose from the Russian

word “biritch,” the name of a card game also calledRussian Whist. In fact, the earliest printed mentionof bridge appears in a pamphlet published in 1886on the game biritch.

Here are three deals, published in the BridgeBulletin, that demonstrate Soloway’s consummateskill as a card player.

They were published under Sue Emery’sbyline in 1991 on the occasion of Soloway’sovertaking Barry Crane as the all-time leader inmasterpoints.

The following deal was first published in TheBridge World magazine and comes from thenational Men’s Pairs at the 1969 Fall NABC inMiami Beach. Soloway was playing with JerryHallee:Dlr: East ♠ Q 4Vul: None ♥ 9 7 5 3

West led a heart, and Soloway ruffed thesecond round. Figuring West had the ♠K becauseof East’s weak two-bid, Soloway made a goodmove by leading a low spade from hand at trickthree. West won the ♠K and continued the suit.

Soloway drew exactly two rounds of trumpsand cashed the ♠A, pitching a club from dummy. His plan was to avoid having to guess whichplayer held the ♣Q, but when East discarded aheart on the third spade, it appeared he had begunwith 2=5=2=4 distribution.

Soloway might have gone with the odds andtaken the club finesse through the player known tohave length in the suit, but he found a better way.

Soloway could see that it was not going towork to discard another of dummy’s clubs on the♠J, then play the top two clubs, ending in hand, and ruff a club in dummy. West would be able toruff in with the ♦J for the setting trick.

After thinking this through, Soloway ruffedhis good ♠J with dummy’s last trump. On thatplay, East was beginning to feel the pressure. If hediscarded another heart, Soloway could ruff aheart to establish the ♥9 as trick 11. East, therefore, had to pitch a club.

Soloway then ruffed a heart and picked upWest’s last trump, putting East in an unbearableposition. He had to come down to three cards, andone of them had to be the ♥J to cover dummy’s 9.Once Soloway knew both hands had two clubs, hedidn’t care who had the queen. He played a clubto the king and overtook the jack in hand, fellingthe queen, The ♣4 was his 11th trick.

The next deal was reported by Eddie Kantar inPopular Bridge. It was played in a practice gameagainst other experts prior to a team trials in 1976.The deal was dubbed the “minus one squeeze” forthe way in which Soloway brought home a difficultcontract.

Soloway opened the South hand 1NT andsoon became declarer in 6NT. West led a heart todummy. With 10 top tricks and not much time,Soloway first went after the diamonds. The ♦Jwas covered by the king and ace, and a diamondback toward dummy was ducked by West.Soloway put in dummy’s 8, which held.

With 11 tricks in, Soloway ran his clubs. Justbefore he led the last one, this was the position:

On the ♣10, East could not afford to throw aheart, so he dropped a spade. South and Westpitched hearts. Now Soloway led the ♠J andducked when East covered with the queen. Eastgot out with a heart, but dummy won, anddeclarer had the rest of the tricks with the ♠A K 5.

After three passes, Soloway opened 1NTwith the South hand. His partner, BobbyGoldman, raised to 3NT.

Soloway won the opening spade lead in handwith the 10. He recognized the danger of takingthe diamond finesse immediately in case Westhad the ♥A (if the finesse lost and East playedanother spade, clearing the suit, the contractwould be doomed because West would have the♥A as an entry to the good spades).

To counter that possibility, Soloway led aheart to dummy’s king at trick two. When theking held, the defenders were powerless.Whether East played a second spade on gettingin with the ♦K or played on hearts for threetricks, Soloway had his nine tricks and his game.

“The players liked it,” she said, “and I liked it.”Szejnwald started developing the BridgePad in

early 2007 after 15 years of creating wirelessdevices for schools. BridgePads go on sale very

soon, he said. The company web site iswww.bridgepadrf.com.

At the end of the day, Lynch-Long and herpartner, Rosemary Hood, gave the BridgePad athumbs-up rating.

“It eliminates a lot of errors,” said Lynch-Long,“from wrong scores and bad penmanship.”

Hood said she would use the devices again withpleasure. “I like electronics,” she said. “We’regetting modernized. What I like is you don’t have towait for the data to be entered.”

Fortunately for the word of bridge, Smith alsobecame interested in bridge at an early age and hebecame proficient at it as well. He has won sixNorth American titles, and has many more second-place finishes.

Smith recently garnered another accolade in hisbridge career by taking home a bronze medal fromthe Senior Bowl at the world championships inShanghai, China.

With the Fall NABC in his hometown, Smith ishelping out by performing a piano concert, featuringjazz and show tunes, following the evening sessiontonight. Smith will perform a one-hour show in theGolden Gate Ballroom.

It’s almost a week late, butif you see Rick Beye during theNABC, wish him a belatedHappy Birthday. You can check

with Aileen Osofsky about his age.

On dutyTwo players were in the elevator at the

Marriott. One asked if the other was playing withhis usual partner, a world champion. “Yes,” saidthe second player, “he needs his punishment.”

Sharp eyeTournament Director Dan Plato was visiting

Coit Tower, one of San Francisco’s landmarks, and as he eyed the murals inside the building, hecame upon a section devoted to lawyers. Themural depicted a library, and Plato noticed a bookon a shelf that many might consider out of place. It is the Laws of Bridge, with a spade icon on thespine.

Golden Gate?An observation from Jeff Johnston, ACBL’s

meeting planner: This is the wrong city for aperson to rush into the lobby of the Marriott, fiveminutes late for a 9 a.m. game, and yell, “Where’sthe bridge?”

Caddy tracks

Jackie Matthews, the tournament director incharge of caddies, wants to make it known howmuch she and the caddies she supervises at eachNABC appreciate the Bridge Bulletin columnistwho calls herself the Hat Lady.

Marie Sander of St. Louis writes mostly aboutproper behavior at the table, and she ends mostcolumns with the admonition, “Ya’ll play nicenow.”

In the September issue, Sander devoted anentire column to the importance of treating thecaddies with respect and kindness. Matthews saysshe was impressed with Sander’s understanding ofthe challenges of caddying, and she says themessage was well received by her charges.

To Sander, Matthews and the caddies send amessage: “Thanks for noticing.”

When dummy came down, declarer no doubtwished he was in 4♥, but he had to do the bestwith what he had.

South put in the ♦10 on West’s lead of a lowdiamond, East playing low. South overtook withthe king to leave an entry to dummy, based onthe presumption that West started with the ♦A.

Next came the hearts, East ducking the firsttwo rounds. West pitched a discouraging spade,so after winning the ♥A, East played a low clubto the king and ace. The ♣10 was returned andducked, and a third round of clubs cleared thatsuit.

Declarer confidently played a diamond fromhand, inserting dummy’s queen when Westplayed low. Disaster! The defenders now hadfour clubs, three diamonds and a heart for downfour.

Who was the player with the smooth duck attrick one? None other than Jeff Aker. His rewardwas four down and a top.

(1) Five or more diamonds, singleton club, game forcing.

(2) Suitable hand for slam. You could play in a 5♦ contract, which is

about 60%, or you could play a messy 4♠ on a 4-3 fit. The pairs factor persuades you to do thelatter. How would you tackle it on the lead of the♦J?

Declarer was disappointed to find such badspades in dummy, but he had to concentrate on thetask at hand.

Declarer won in dummy and played a spade tothe 9 and 10. When West continued the attack ondiamonds, declarer decided spades were 4-2. Thatmeant he needed the heart finesse against bestdefense, but the defenders were not always goingto find that.

Declarer led a low spade from hand to retaincontrol, and West did his best by rising with the♠Q and shifting to a club, but declarer could notbe prevented from taking the rest of the tricks fora great matchpoint score.

analyst at IBM for 31 years. Stu lives with his wife Marli in a rural area

near San Jose and has been a resident of the BayArea since 1978. He can often be found riding hisbicycle around the area, many times on the way toa daytime club game.

In Memory of Dee SauerDee was born in Canada and came to the Bay

Area in her early 20s. She was an animal loverand always had two or three pets. She also likedsports and was an avid follower of the 49ers.

Dee took up bridge in 1962 and was an ownerof a bridge club in San Francisco for a few yearswhere she conducted bridge classes.

Honoring Will WatsonEveryone loves Will Watson. He is able to do

anything and everything plus answer biddingproblems. He came to California from Connecticutand never went back. Lucky us! Will went to CalTech and started as a backup director for theCollege Club in 1999. He got a job in computersduring the tech boom but was laid off during thedot-com bust and then became a full time director.

Will directs games all along the peninsula, plays professionally and serves on the Board ofUnit 507. He has won several regionals and hasrepresented District 21 in the GNT Flight A threetimes. He’s the go-to person for all of us from SanJose to San Francisco.

In Memory of Margaret HaleMargaret Hale was one of a kind. Her unique

personality intrigued her very wide circle offriends. Her life of 82 years was full of good timesand bad. After WWII, when she joined herhusband (who was stationed in Japan), sheadopted two Japanese-American babies who laterreturned to the states with them.

Her great grandchild Sophie was the light ofher life, and was with her when she died earlierthis year. From a very early age she had serioushealth problems, which became more severe asshe aged. But through it all, she just kept goingand was amazingly cheerful.

After retiring from the telephone company, bridge became her passion, and for many yearsshe had a weekly game and taught bridge classes. She was one of the friendliest people one mighthave had the pleasure to know. If she didn’t knowyou, she always introduced herself at the bridgetable and asked your name — unfortunately, something rarely done — and, hence, she kneweveryone who played. All who knew her becamepart of her life. This very strong, amazing ladytouched many lives and is missed by many.

Honoring Stu GoodgoldStu Goodgold is the District 21 Vice

President. He is a Silver Life Master and has beenplaying bridge since his college days at Caltech.Recently retired, he was a software performance
