Open Teams Qualification - Round 8

With three matches to go, all the teams on BBO were clear favourites to make the cut and continue to the knockouts. In this match, the biggest board appeared at the very start, and it set the tone for the rest of the match.

Board 11. Dealer South. Vul None. [ 7 ] Q 8 6 2 { J 7 5 2 } J 8 5 4 [ 10 9 4 2 [ Q 8 3 ] 9 5 3 ] J { 8 4 { 10 9 6 3 } A 7 6 3 } K Q 10 9 2 [ A K J 6 5 ] A K 10 7 4 { A K Q } — West North East South Zatorski Roll Pachtmann Levin — — — 2} Pass 2] Pass 2[ Pass 2NT Pass 3] Pass 4] Pass 6] All Pass The Israeli North-South pair used a 2] response

to indicate an extremely weak hand opposite the strong 2} opening. This led to the weak hand being declarer, but more importantly it made Levin

excessively pessimistic, giving up on the grand slam and just signing off at 6].

This auction looks highly problematic. First of all, 2] is usually defined as 0-3 HCP – North had 4 HCP. Of course opinions vary on the appropriate range here. Secondly, South didn’t need very much for a grand slam and there was unexploited room for cuebidding over 4].

Roll ruffed the }K lead, ruffed out the [Q and easily made 13 tricks, +1010.

West North East South Lengy Gromov Bareket Dubinin — — — 1} Pass 1{ 1NT Dble 2} Pass Pass 4} Dble 4] Pass 5} Pass 6] Pass 7] All Pass

At the other table the 1} opening was strong and 1{ showed 0-7 HCP. East interfered with 1NT for the minors. Dubinin used the club bid by his opponent to cuebid at the four-level (showing a very strong hand with club shortness) instead of simply bidding his suits. The 4} cuebid was very useful, as up to that point the auction had not been game-forcing.

Dubinin cuebid again at the five-level, showing an even stronger hand, definitely with a club void, and he was encouraged by his partner’s free bid of 4], followed by acceptance of the slam try 6]. For this bidding, North should have good heart support plus some help outside clubs. This was enough for South to bid the grand slam. Making 13 tricks was easy, and Era jumped to a 11-0 lead.

There followed two laydown games for East-West, bid and played similarly at both tables with no swings.

The fourth board of the set was more interesting, and once more fortune favoured the brave.

Board 14. Dealer East. Vul None. [ Q 7 5 3 ] K 6 5 4 { 8 } K 7 6 2 [ 9 6 4 [ K J ] Q 9 8 ] 7 3 2 { A K 10 7 4 3 { Q J 9 5 } 4 } A Q 8 3 [ A 10 8 2 ] A J 10 { 6 2 } J 10 9 5 West North East South Zatorski Roll Pachtmann Levin — — 1} Pass 1[ Pass 1NT Pass 3{ Pass 3[ Pass 3NT All Pass West North East South Lengy Gromov Bareket Dubinin — — 1} Pass 1[ Pass 1NT Pass 2} Pass 2{ Pass Pass Dbl 3{ 3[ All Pass

Both East-West pairs were using a natural system with Transfer Walsh over the 1} opening (so that 1[ shows diamonds and denies 4-card majors), and then two-way Checkback over the 1NT rebid (2{ artificial game force, 2} forces partner to bid 2{ - either to play or to start an invitational sequence).

The difference was in West’s second bid. Lengy used the signoff route with a maximum hand for this sequence. This prompted the Russian pair to interfere. Given that West had announced weakness, North had a clear reopening double. Bareket supported his partner, but Dubinin had enough to bid 3[.

The defence was mildly embarrassing, as Lengy led his club singleton but Bareket couldn’t read it and never continued clubs after winning the }Q. Thus at least one defensive trick was lost, and then a diamond ruff-and-sluff spared declarer the heart guess, +140.

At the other table, Zatorski rebid 3{ - a mild game invitation based on a long suit rather than high card

strength. Pachtmann gave it a try, bidding 3[ which asked his partner to bid 3NT with a heart stopper.

Amir Levin read this bidding well, and rather than a spade which would have helped declarer considerably he started with ]J. In case North has a doubleton heart honor and the spade ace, declarer should duck in dummy, but Pachtmann considered this scenario unlikely and covered with ]Q. He was right, as the suit had suddenly become blocked!

Perhaps Roll should have switched to spades after winning his ]K, hoping to induce a misguess. After the heart continuation, everything became clear for declarer. South won ]A 10 but was unable to cash a fourth trick. Thus the only chance for declarer was to finesse clubs and play for [A in South and [Q with North. This is what Pachtmann did, +400 and the lead was doubled to 22-0.

This lead grew further when some poor bidding from Roll-Levin resulted in a 2] contract played in a 4-2 fit, producing three vulnerable undertricks while Gromov-Dubinin were content to play in their eight-card diamond fit and score +90.

Shokolata scored their first IMPs on board 16, but not very convincingly. Zatorski-Pachtmann bid a vulnerable game which required trumps to be 3-2 (some 4-1 distributions could be handled as well), but they were 4-1 offside and Bareket-Lengy gained 6 IMPs for bidding one trick less.

There followed an interesting partscore deal:

Board 17. Dealer North. Vul None. [ A J 4 ] A K 9 8 { A Q J 8 } 7 2 [ Q 3 2 [ K 10 7 5 ] 7 6 4 ] Q 10 5 2 { 9 4 3 2 { K 10 } A J 10 } K Q 8 [ 9 8 6 ] J 3 { 7 6 5 } 9 6 5 4 3 West North East South Zatorski Roll Pachtmann Levin — 1{ Dble Pass 1] 1NT 2] All Pass We have already seen that Pachtmann is never

afraid to bid up. In this case North promised 18-19 HCP while his partner promised nothing, but he still supported with four cards.

Zatorski handled the precarious seven-card fit quite well, winning the opening club lead in hand and leading a trump to the queen, which won the trick. South’s heart jack won the next trick, and at this point South should have switched to diamonds – the suit bid by his partner – which would have allowed North do draw trumps, develop two more diamond tricks and beat the contract by two tricks.

Instead, Levin passively continued clubs, handing declarer a vital tempo. Zatorski won again in hand and played a spade to the ten, which held. He was not yet home, as there was no obvious way to come back to hand to lead a diamond up. The right card to continue with was [K – either creating an entry or endplaying North. Instead he played }K. North ruffed – a mistake! He should have discarded, and then the [K play would have been ineffective since it blocks the spade suit with no re-entry to dummy after North draws trumps.

After North endplayed himself by ruffing, there was no way to prevent declarer from making two more spade tricks plus the {K, and so the contract made.

West North East South Lengy Gromov Bareket Dubinin — 1} 1] Dble Pass 1NT All Pass

I don’t know what East-West’s agreements were over the strong 1} opening – perhaps 1] showed both majors. South doubled to show weakness, and at this table East-West didn’t bother to compete over 1NT – a correct decision. A spade lead would have comfortably beaten the contract. The actual small heart lead won by dummy’s jack gave declarer an outside chance – Gromov had to exploit his solitary visit to dummy and find the unlikely play of a small diamond to the eight. When he made the normal play of a diamond to the {Q his resources were used up, and there was no way to come to seven tricks. North-South -50, but still 2 IMPs to Era.

Two boards later, another partscore deal produced the largest swing of the entire match: 12 IMPs.

Board 19. Dealer South. Vul E/W. [ A Q 8 7 5 ] J 9 7 { 9 6 } A Q 3 [ J 10 6 3 2 [ K 9 ] K 8 4 ] 6 5 3 { J 4 { K Q 10 5 3 2 } K J 7 } 9 2 [ 4 ] A Q 10 2 { A 8 7 } 10 8 6 5 4 West North East South Zatorski Roll Pachtman Levin — — — Pass Pass 1NT Pass 2} Pass 2[ Pass 2NT All Pass

This time Pachtmann kept quiet during the bidding (he was vulnerable after all), and then led {K, partner dropping his {J. The layout was unkind for declarer, who could not avoid losing a trick to the heart king and then the spade king plus the rest of East’s diamond suit. N/S -100.

West North East South Lengy Gromov Bareket Dubinin — — — Pass Pass 1[ Pass 1NT Pass Pass 2{ Dble All Pass

When his opponents stopped in 1NT, Bareket decided it was time to do something, but he was greeted with an excellent penalty double by Dubinin (or perhaps it was card-showing, well converted by Gromov).

South led a spade, got his ruff and attacked hearts. The club finesse followed later, and declarer could only watch helplessly as his opponents collected +500.

The final score was 45-12 in Era’s favour. The winners continued to play powerfully and eventually topped the Swiss, while the losers still managed to come back in the last two rounds and make the cut.

A person who hoards wealth and spends as little money as possible.

The Miser is a five-act comedy in prose by the French playwright Molière. Satire and farce blend in the fast-moving plot, when the miser's hoard of cash is stolen. On this deal from the Senior Teams both West and East were guilty of hoarding their assets (trumps).

Board 4. Dealer West. All Vul. [ J 8 7 2 ] K 10 7 { 6 } K Q 10 7 6 [ K 6 3 [ Q 10 9 ] J 5 4 3 ] 6 2 { K 9 7 { A Q J 10 5 } 5 3 2 } A J 8 [ A 5 4 ] A Q 9 8 { 8 4 3 2 } 9 4

Dble Values2{ Heart raise

The player holding the South cards is noted for his eccentricities, and this overcall is typical of his approach. Bidding 2{ without a fourth heart is very much a matter for the individual conscience, as is the subsequent decision to compete with 3].

Had West led a trump declarer would have been struggling to take more than seven tricks, but West led the seven of diamonds and East won with the ace. A trump switch here would be equally effective, but East played a second diamond and declarer ruffed in dummy and played the king of clubs.

East won and played a third diamond. Declarer ruffed in dummy, then cashed the queen of clubs and ruffed a club.

This was the position:

[ J 8 7 2 ] K { — } 10 7 [ K 6 3 [ Q 10 9 ] J 5 4 3 ] 6 2 { — { 10 5 } — } — [ A 5 4 ] A Q 9 { 8 } —

When declarer played his last diamond West was too mean to ruff, and pitched a spade. Declarer ruffed with dummy's king of hearts and played a spade to the ace. West alertly unblocked the king but although East could win the spade exit and play a trump, declarer could win and play a spade, forcing West to ruff and lead into the ]A9.

Whatever his predilections in the bidding, South certainly knows how to play!

Lest you form the impression that this deal must come from a match between two teams at the wrong end of the table, at the start of Round nine they were occupying the top two places!

Smederevac, playing with Matilda Poplilov, received a diamond lead and East shifted to the king then jack of hearts. Smederevac ruffed, led a club to the king, ducked and a club back. East took her ace (good!) and

shifted to a low diamond, which was fatal. Smederevac won her queen, cashed the spade king, ruffed a diamond, and cashed a club to pitch a diamond. This was the ending:

[ A ] 10 { — } J 9 [ — [ 10 7 5 ] A Q 7 6 ] — { — { A } — } — [ Q J 6 ] — { 10 } —

When declarer led a club from dummy East could ruff in with the seven but declarer could overruff, ruff a diamond to dummy, and be in position for the trump coup.

The key to the deal is for East to appreciate that declarer only has nine tricks; five spades and four clubs. If you play trumps at every turn declarer can take diamond ruffs but in turn you can kill his club tricks by ruffing in.

She can't come to more than nine tricks whatever she does.

Open Teams Qualifications - Round 8Heimdal versus Austria

Sometimes the first board of a set can be an indication the way the wind will be blowing. On other occasions, a team will flatter to deceive.

When Andreas Babsch opened a strong club and got a negative one diamond response, the two club overcall let him cuebid, doubled by Groetheim. Now his partner got to contribute a natural heart bid, and two rounds later North was in 7]. Arno Lindermann ruffed the club lead, drew two rounds of trumps with the king and

queen, then ruffed two spades in hand and claimed when spades broke.

In the other room where Aa/Livgard were taking on Simon/C. Terraneo the N/S auction has been censored (to prevent readers of a nervous disposition from a shock to the system, but Aa/Livgard stopped in 4], and Austria led 14-0.

This was a nice auction to a sensible spot. In the other room Aa passed the South hand after a strong club to his right, then bid up to 4[. Since East had shown both his suits E/W were persuaded to bid on to 5] over 4[. Unluckily for East, though you do not appear to need the club finesse in that contract, repeated spade leads promoted the ]9, so that contact went quietly one down.

In 5{x Tondel chose a very careful line and was suitably rewarded. He won the [A and ruffed a spade, overtook a trump to ruff a spade, drew the last trump and took a heart finesse of the jack. Seeing what was about to happen, Babsch won his ace and returned the queen, hoping his partner had the jack (but of course then declarer would have ducked the second heart). Whatever he did, though, declarer had 11 tricks and 12 IMPs.

On the next deal Heimdal cannot have expected to have generated a game swing when you look at the two contracts reached.

On a comparable auction in the other room East offered a choice of games with 3NT and West was happy to pass. The good news about playing 4] is that unless you play to drop the doubleton ]Q offside (not ridiculous, I suppose) you need hearts 3-3 with the queen right and that is the end of it. Groetheim finessed in trumps, then crossed his fingers, and wrapped up 10 tricks. Not bad – and since in the other room after a 2NT opening declarer had rejected the heart finesse, to go down in 3NT, Heimdal had vaulted into a 24-14 lead.

Heimdal had a chance for more on the next deal, but

Tondel misguessed a king-jack combination in game, while they settled for partscore in the other room (on best defence, on the same guess) and received a favourable lead to make their contract. That made it 22-18, but Heimdal opened up a lead on the next two deals, on the first of which Lindermann elected to use Stayman facing a strong no-trump with a 4-4-3-2 five-count – and caught his partner with a 2-2-5-4 minimum. Babsch corrected 2] to 2NT but that went down a trick while 1NT made 120 in the other room. On the next deal both tables reached a game that basically needed hearts 3-2 or a singleton honour; the suit did not behave, but the Norwegians’ 4] went down one while the Austrians’ 3NT went three down vulnerable, for five more IMPs to Heimdal.

Then I thought Groetheim was faced with a vicious problem:

Was Groetheim right in his assessment of the deal? He led a heart, hoping to build a heart to go with his minor-suit aces. Declarer not unreasonably tackled trumps by leading out the ace. That was down one, while 6]x on a club lead to the queen and a spade shift escaped for 300 when declarer guessed diamonds. That made it 44-18 to Heimdal, and Heimdal picked up another partscore for an optimistic 3NT by Lindermann after Babsch took a tactical 1NT opening in third chair a little too seriously.TEAM HEIMDAL

Groetheim’s spade lead here looks a little optimistic after partner had two chances to double for a spade lead. Declarer won in dummy and might immediately have passed the ]10. But he finessed in diamonds, and now Groetheim mysteriously played a second low spade; but declarer was still not out of the wood.

Why did West (who as a passed hand cannot hold }A) lead a low spade not a relatively safe club? He must surely hold }Q, so there is no room for the heart queen.

Thus it looks best to unblock diamonds, cross to ]A and cash the {J then run the ]10. But Babsch preferred to lead a heart to the ten without unblocking diamonds. Tondel won ]Q and returned a heart, scrambling declarer’s communications for good. Eight tricks were the limit now. Since they had played 1NT making +150, this was another double swing to Heimdal. They had won 56-18 with no fewer than seven pickups of 5 IMPs or more.

Open Teams Qualification - Round 9

On Sunday morning, the Russian team Era were lying in 13th place. Two average results and one big win in Round 8 had seen them rise to 5th . As a consequence, they were scheduled to play one of the high-ranked teams in Round 9, in this case the Vinci squad. Because this was the first time Era showed up among the leading teams, I raced to their match to see what would happen.

On the very first board, both N/S pairs were playing the same contract but the Russian declarer made three tricks more than his Italian counterpart, though the play on the first three tricks was the same at both tables. How come?

Board: 21. Dealer North/NS [ Q 9 5 4 ] Q 10 4 { Q 4 } A Q 9 4 [ K 10 7 [ 3 2 ] K ] J 9 8 7 2 { 10 9 8 7 6 3 { A K } K J 7 } 10 8 5 2 [ A J 8 6 ] A 6 5 3 { J 5 2 } 6 3

East led the {AK and got off play with a heart which ran to West blank king. West played another diamond on which declarer shed a club from hand. East ruffed with the [2. West ruffed the heart return to put the contract already one down and when declarer refrained from taking the club finesse, he had to lose to both the black kings, and thus went three down. Era +300.

West North East South Donati Gromov Tokay Dubinin 1NT Pass 2} Pass 2[ Pass 3] Pass 3[ All Pass1NT was 12-15. When West returned a diamond at

trick four, declarer ruffed with the nine, which won the trick. Gromov continued the [Q which ran to West’s king but when West returned a club, he put up the queen, which held. Trumps were drawn with dummy’s [AJ, and East was squeezed on the last trump. When he discarded a club, declarer could ruff out the clubs with dummy’s last trump, and his ]Q provided the necessary entry. Nicely done, Era +140 and an unexpected but welcome 10 IMPs to get underway.

North led his singleton {Q. South won the ace and declarer contributed the king, of course. Unsure now about the position, South cashed one top heart and switched to a trump, won by declarer’s ace. Zatorski got off play with another heart to South’s jack. South’s next move was to kill what he thought was dummy’s only entry to the hearts by leading the }A which dummy had to ruff. However, dummy’s [J was cashed, a heart ruffed, the last trump drawn and then…declarer’s low diamond was the much needed entry to dummy’s hearts after all. Ten tricks, Era +170.

When Gromov was able to show his suit in a weak hand opposite partner’s Strong Club, East was effectively shut out. Once West started off by cashing two top spades, declarer could always ruff his third club in hand. He thus emerged with an overtrick for another +130 and 7 more IMPs to Era.

Another big blow was dealt to Vinci on the third board of the match:

Even a spade lead does not break this contract, but on the actual heart lead from East, declarer could win, draw trumps and establish his ]J for a spade discard. Era +1370 and 12 more IMPs to them. They were leading by 29-0 already.

On the very next board, Vinci hit back.

For Tokay, Donati’s double of 3{ was ambiguous as well – maybe, they ran into partner’s second suit? On a trump lead, the contract was made when East failed to win the first heart trick with his ace to quickly push a club through, necessary to break up the club endplay on West. Era another +470 and 13 more IMPs to win the match 43-11 or 18.15 – 1.85 V.P. This big win saw them reach first place in the rankings with just one more match to go in the qualifications.

Open Teams Qualification - Round 10

At the start of the final qualification round, the two teams were in 7th and 8th place. Their lead over the 16th placed team, however, was sufficiently small that a big loss would probably lead to the losing team failing to qualify whereas a near draw would see both teams into the last 16.

On the first board, the Vinci team dealt their opponents a very big but not unlucky blow:

Board: 1. Dealer North/None [ 7 5 ] 5 3 { 10 8 6 5 } K 10 8 4 2 [ A 10 [ Q J 9 8 4 ] A K 6 4 ] Q 10 7 2 { A Q { K J 9 3 } A Q J 9 7 } -- [ K 6 3 2 ] J 9 8 { 7 4 2 } 6 5 3 West North East South Versace Nowosadzki Lauria Kalita - Pass Pass Pass 2} Pass 2] Pass 3] Pass 4{ Pass 4[ Pass 5} Pass 5{ Pass 5[ Pass 7] All Pass

Two Clubs was strong and 2] showed 8+ HCP, and spades. 3] then showed four hearts with longer clubs and 4{ was a slam try in hearts. After this, 4[ was a cuebid as was 5} but the latter bid also denied possession of the [K. 5{ was another cuebid and 5[ confirmed the [Q and thus was a grand slam try, possibly a little stretched with {K the only control.

Lauria, did not take too long about the play. He won the diamond lead with dummy’s ace, drew three rounds of trumps and then simply led a spade to dummy’s ten. When this held, the rest was very easy: [A, {Q overtaken, [K ruffed away and the losing diamond discarded on the }A.

Since Brink-Drijver in the other room, quite rightly on statistical grounds, stayed out of the grand slam,

the Vinci team gained 11 IMPs on the first board of their last match.

In the Era v. Lavazza match, the grand slam was reached at both tables. You will find this part of the story elsewhere in this Bulletin.

Two boards later, it was Bingo again for Vinci:

At this point, Vinci were leading 22-0 which would mean Pszczoła were out of the first 16.

There was little in the next four boards. The score stood at 22-3, a result that would still not be enough

In the Mixed Teams semifinal between the Russian team Mnepo and the transnational Ward Platt, Georgi Matushko opened Three Clubs on the North hand. The preempt was followed by a psychic response of Three Spades from South that led to EW missing their game in spades. Five Diamonds wasn’t anything to write home about… A great success for the preemptive side.

That’s all old news. The following astonishing board was played in round 10 of the Open Teams Swiss, where Era took on Lavazza in one of the matches. The spectators were treated to the following “laser and light show”:

Another preempt with a very similar hand – it seems popular these days…

Here however, the preempt came in very handy for the opponents. Both from the bidding and play point of view.

Four Clubs: pick a suit … Five Clubs: … naaaahh, I have a very good hand … Six Clubs: pick a suit, I have some good values for you. OK, a grand slam then!

A trump was led. Declarer pulled South’s trumps ending in dummy. A diamond to the ace followed whereupon declarer cashed the ace of clubs, pitching a diamond from dummy. Next he overtook the queen of diamonds with the king, discarded a spade on the jack of diamonds and finished up with a ruffing finesse against South’s king of spades. Having seen two hearts and three diamonds from North he probably believed spades were even more unevenly distributed from the auction. Nevertheless, zero success this time for the preempt.

Dubinin led the nine of hearts. With quite limited entries to the West hand one has to be very careful in planning the play. Additionally, it would be very nice to learn something of the distribution of the opponent’s cards before making any decision regarding finesses, ruffing finesses or whatever line we might choose.

Bocchi ran the nine of hearts to his ten and played the queen of spades. When South didn’t cover he eventually overtook with the ace and ruffed a club, deciding to play for the king of clubs to be in either of the hands in at most a four-card suit. Declarer then played a diamond to the ace, ruffed a club, played a diamond to the queen and ruffed a third club, leaving;

Bocchi now cashed the king of diamonds and pitched a spade from dummy. Next he ruffed a spade in dummy, and pulled trumps. When the king of clubs didn’t drop it was one down and 17 IMPs to Era.

The eighth-round Senior Teams match between squads captained by Reese Milner and Jeff Wolfson promised to be an interesting one as both teams – loaded with world champions – were doing well. After seven rounds, Wolfson (Neil Silverman, Benito Garozzo, Franco Masoero) was in fourth place, Milner (Hemant Lall, Jeff Meckstroth, Zia Mahmood, Apolinary Kowalski and Jacek Romanski) in sixth place. In all, the players on the two teams hold 36 world championships.

The match did not start well for Wolfson.

Kowalski’s 5NT bid no doubt was asking his partner about top honors in hearts. The 6{ response appears to show one of the top three. That was enough for Kowalski to bid the grand slam.

There was little to the play after Wolfson led a heart to the jack and ace. At trick two, Kowalski cashed the [A and ruffed a spade in dummy. He played a diamond to hand and ruffed a spade with dummy’s queen. When the [Q fell, he could pull trumps and claim plus 1510.

At the other table, there was an apparent short circuit in the bidding as Garozzo and Masoero didn’t even try for a small slam. Plus 510 meant a 14-IMP swing to the Milner team.

Kowalski led the [J and Silverman won the ace. He ruffed a spade to hand, cashed the {A, played a diamond to dummy, continuing with the ]2 to his 10. Kowalski won with the ]Q, cashed the ]A and exited with a spade. At that point. Silverman said he would try the club finesse to make his contract. Informed that the finesse would fail, Silverman claimed one down for minus 100.

The contract makes if declarer eliminates spades before playing on hearts. As the cards lie, South wins the two heart tricks but then must play a club into declarer’s A-Q or give him a ruff-sluff by playing a spade. Making for

That’s a lot of bidding at unfavorable vulnerability when partner can’t make a peep, and Masoero found himself in a doubled contract facing a true Yarborough. He got lucky with a heart opening lead but had to play the rest of the contract out of his hand, losing two clubs, a diamond and a spade for minus 500.

A couple of boards later, Silverman and Wolfson earned a swing by getting to a game that was missed at the other table.

Thanks to the blockage in hearts, 3NT is always makeable if declarer guesses right in the suit.

On a club lead, declarer has eight tricks and needs to develop one in spades. If he plays a spade to the jack, South wins the [A and may try for the setting tricks in hearts.

Declarer must cover the first time the ]J is played to block the suit (a sneaky ]10 might work better for the defense). If declarer gets it right, the defenders are limited to three tricks in hearts.

In practice, Silverman didn’t need to think about hearts after Kowalski started with the [2. All Silverman needed from there was a successful finesse in clubs.

Plus 400 was good for a 7-IMP swing because Meckstroth and Zia stopped in 3{ at the other table.

Four boards later, Wolfson scored again on a wild board even though Silverman went down in a contract he might have made.

Kowalski led a low club and Silverman played low from dummy. Romanski won the }Q and played the [10. Silverman covered with the king and ruffed when Kowalski played the ace. A heart went to Silverman’s king, Kowalski playing a spade. Silverman ruffed his other spade in dummy and played a heart. Romanski thought for a time before playing the ace and continuing with a spade. Silverman ruffed and played a diamond to dummy’s ace. The {K was ruffed by North and another spade forced declarer again. Silverman had two good trumps in his hand, but he had a losing club and a losing diamond. He was two down for minus 100. To make the contract, Silverman must finesse in diamonds instead of playing to the ace and then the king. After declarer plays a diamond to the jack, North can ruff the ace or king, but the other high honor will pick up South’s {Q and declare can use those cards to avoid a second club loser.

Minus 100 was a disappointing result, but Wolfson still earned a swing because of the action at the other table.

The curative properties of Montecatini’s waters were probably first discovered in Roman times. Evidence of this comes from a number of small statues of pagan idols found during excavation of the spring-crater at the Leopoldine Spa. The statues were most likely votive offerings to the gods, cast into the spring in thanks for a cure.

Montecatini spa waters spring from four sources, each of which boasts particular therapeutic properties. Inhalation therapy at Montecatini Spas is administered with Leopoldina water. Inhalation treatments stimulate the body’s overall immune defense mechanisms (secretory immunoglobulin IgA), they are also particularly indicated in the treatment of childhood diseases.

In Montecatini we could enjoy a lot of good defenses in the Mixed Teams Open European Championship, and one of them had Michal Klukowski and Justyna Zmuda as its main characters.

North /South arrived in a 4] contract, with South as declarer.

As you can see any lead but a spade allows the contract to win, as the defense needs to cash their tricks before declarer can discard losers on the diamonds. It seems that Michal had no doubts and he lead a spade.

Lead: [7Down came dummy and on seeing the diamond

suit, Zmuda understood that declarer had a running diamond side suit, since if South did not have the queen, it was in West. So it was urgent for the defense to run their tricks. Her partner's lead and the two spades in dummy marked declarer with two spades, so to defeat the contract the defense surely urgently needed to develop a club trick.

And yes the only return that defeats is a club.Zmuda won the trick with her [A, and returned

the }5. Declarer's move no longer mattered, since the ]A in Klukowski's hand secured a club trick for the defense. At the table Jansma chose to finesse, and Michal won the trick with the }K to continue by cashing the ace of spade.

The trump ace sealed the contract's fate. One down. The only lead AND the only return to defeat the

contract... It seems that Klukowski - Zmuda reinforced their defenses with Leopoldina water before the championship ...

At the other table the contract also was 4] by North, but made, +420.

[ 8 7 6 2 ] --- { --- } ---[ K 9 [ J 10 5] --- ] 10{ ---- { ---} J 8 } ----

[ A Q ] --- { ---- } K 9
