A soldier sustained injury whenhis motorcycle crashed into a pas-senger bus on the Weligama-Denipitiya Bridge on May Day.
The victim was identified asChathu Madurabandage SagaraKumara (21) serving in the North.
He is receiving treatment at theMatara General Hospital.

There has been a sharp increasein the number of accidents involvingSLTB buses during the first threemonths of 2011, Ministry of Transportsays. “Three hundred and eighty acci-dents have been reported during thefirst three months of 2011 causingnearly 23 deaths,” Deputy Minister,Transport, Rohana Dissanayaka said.During the corresponding period in2010, the number of accidents was326. According to statistics of theMinistry of Transport in 2010 for onemillion kilometres nearly 1,158 acci-dents were reported.
Taking that situation into consider-ation the Ministry of Transport hadtaken steps to launch a special pro-gramme, ‘Api Oba Surakimu’ from May1st to 31st to minimise the number ofaccidents. The main objective of theprogramme was to boost the image ofthe Sri Lanka Transport Board, thedeputy minister said.
He said that at the end of everymonth the ministry would select thedepot with the minimum number ofaccidents out of all the SLTB depots.(PH)
Deputy Education Minister Vijith VijithamuniSoyza says the government will do away withthe Grade Five Scholarship examination in
the near future.The Moneragala District MP said that once the
government implemented a programme to develop1,000 schools country, there wouldn’t be a need tocontinue with the examination.
He was responding to a query by UPFA MP
Shantha Bandara in Parliament on Tuesday (3).The Deputy Minister said that the Grade Five
Scholarship examination was nothing but a burdenon those sitting it and their parents. He said thatannually about 15,000 students were picked upthrough that examination to grant scholarships.Unfortunately, it had now become a public nuisance.

Outgoing Sri LankanAmbassador to Italy,President’s Counsel HemanthaWarnakulasuriya had convert-ed the Sri Lankan Embassy inRome into an exemplary placeof service to the thousands ofLankan expatriates living inItaly, Controller ofImmigration and EmigrationChulananda Perera said.
Addressing a ceremonyheld at the City Hall in Rome,on April 25, to felicitate theoutgoing Ambassador, Pererasaid that the Lankan Embassyin Rome had been one of themajor problems faced by theDepartment of Immigrationand Emigration. Hundreds ofLankan expatriates in Italyhad been sending petitionscomplaining that the Embassydid not look after their affairsand interests. Within threemonths of assuming officeAmbassador Warnakulasuriyahad addressed all those prob-lems, cleared the backlog andbrought about order out of themess at Lankan Embassy inItaly, he said. “We are proud tosay that we no longer receivecomplaints or petitions fromthat country,” Perera said.
AmabassadorWarankulasuriya introducedrevolutionary changes to setup consular document collect-ing offices in Milano andVerona to expedite the servicefor Lankans living there. TheAmbassador had personallyvisited the Consular office in
Verona and streamlined theplace so that the consularoffice now renders a distin-guished service to the Lankanexpatriates. To bring thesechanges he did not spend asingle cent from the govern-ment coffers and he savedaround 150,000 Euros by bring-ing in discipline and order inthose places, Perera added.
Chairman of the Sri LankaOrganisation in Italy AnandaSeneviratne said the City Hallwas fully packed withLankans and it was ample evi-dence of the fact of how muchthe Sri Lankans were going tomiss a great person whoworked tirelessly for the bene-fit of fellow countrymen livingabroad. Hundreds of Lankansremained standing since therewere not enough seats in theHall. “During the last thirtyyears of my being in Italy, Ihave never witnessed thisnumber of Lankans gatheredin a single place to felicitateany outgoing Ambassador. Icame to know that anotherfelicitation ceremony had beenscheduled at Milano and onemore is being planned in a dif-ferent city by grateful peoplewho have witnessed, for thefirst time, how much service adiplomat could render forthem. All these present heretoday would attest that Mr.Warnakulasuriya is the bestLankan Ambassador ever toserve in Italy, Seneviratnesaid.

Number of accidentsinvolving SLTBbuses decreases
World Press Freedom Day was marked at the Mahaweli Centre yesterday. The ceremony was organized by the Free Media Movement which had launched English and Tamil translations of the book ‘Adahas Gathanaye Goduru’ bySeetha Ranjani. A night club in Mount Lavinia, which was raid-ed over the weekend, had over 400 condoms for theiryoung patrons, the Western Province ExciseDepartment said.
The WP Excise Department, which conductedthe raid, said that over 725,000 rupees worth ofliquor which was being sold without a license wasseized during the raid.
Commissioner of the department J.Pushpakumar Silva said that over 200 youths,between the ages of 17 and 22, were at the party at
the time of the raid. Apart from the illegal foreignliquor officials had also found over 400 condoms.
He said that two suspects were arrested follow-ing the raid and they will be produced in Court onThursday.
Inquiries revealed that most of the youth at theparty, including several young girls, were frominternational schools in Colombo and had gone tothe party without their parent’s knowledge.

The First FieldEngineers Regiment, servingin the peninsula, launched thede-mining operation on April20 to facilitate the on-goingreconstruction and renovationproject undertaken by theArchaeological Departmentwith financial assistance fromthe Netherlands.

The Food Control Authority of theHealth Ministry on Tuesday said that ‘reg-ulations’ on milk and milk products, inrespect of melamine content, would beimplemented with immediate effect.
A senior spokesman told The Islandthat in line with the ‘regulations’ milkpowder and milk based products shouldn’tcontain more than one milligram ofmelanin in one million milligrams ofmilk.
The official said that milk powderimporters and local manufacturers wouldhave to adhere to the directive or face theconsequences.
Responding to a query, the spokesmansaid that prior approval from the healthministry was required to clear freshstocks arriving at the Colombo port. Hesaid that this was a precautionary meas-ure and nothing to be alarmed about. (DJ)
