ABOUT THE AUTHOR

LIONEL BART was born in London on 1st August, 1930, and was educated in his native East End before gaining a scholarship to St. Martin’s School of Art. In 1956, he joined some friends in a skiffle group called The Caveman, featuring Tommy Steele. With the Bart song “Rock With The Caveman”, Steele launched his career with a UK Top 20 Hit in October of that year.

Tommy Steele’s early screen career featured many of Lionel’s songs specially written for him including: The Tommy Steele Story (1957), The Duke Wore Jeans (1958), Light Up The Sky (1959), and Tommy The Toreador (1960), which featured the Top Ten single “Little White Bull.”

Lionel became a disciple of Joan Littlewood at the Theatre Royal in Stratford East and fell in love with musical theatre. This led to two early successful stage shows: Lock Up Your Daughters and Fing’s Ain’t Wot They Used T’Be, both in 1959, the same year as his classic “Living Doll” for Cliff Richard was a Number One single.

1960 opened with “Do You Mind,” another chart-topping single, this time for Anthony Newley. But the best was yet to come. Packed with wonderful songs, Oliver! opened at London’s New Theatre in June 1960 and ran for over 2500 performances. An instant success, it opened in New York in 1962 to great acclaim, winning the coveted Tony Award for its creator. The classic ballad “As Long As He Needs Me” provided a huge hit for Shirley Bassey.

With Oliver! still running, Bart launched three further shows: Blitz (1962), Maggie May (1964), and Twang (1965). During this time, he continued to write for the cinema, notably “From Russia With Love” from the second James Bond movie, which was a chart success for Matt Munro.

In 1968, Oliver! was transformed into a lavish feature film. Perhaps the last of the classic screen musicals, the film received universal acclaim. It collected six Oscars, and the soundtrack album went Gold.

For some years, Lionel remained relatively inactive, his music kept alive by a steady flow of stage revivals, the enduring power of Oliver!, and an unexpected hit single in the form of Cliff Richard with the Young Ones’ 1986 rendition of “Living Doll.”

His real renaissance started in 1989 when he wrote and starred in the Abbey National Building Society TV advert with the accompanying single “Happy Endings.” In 1992, the National Youth Theatre brought Blitz! back to the West End, and, in the following year, Maggie May. In 1994, Big Audio Dynamite revived “Rock With The Caveman,” featured in The Flintstones movie soundtrack.

In 1994, Oliver! was given a new, acclaimed revival at the London Palladium, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and directed by Sam Mendes.

Lionel Bart’s international reputation as a composer, lyricist, and playwright spanned more than four decades and included no less than nine Ivor Novello songwriting awards and the many Oscars for Oliver!. He was the first British composer to receive a Tony Award. In December 1997, Lionel was honored with a Variety Club Silver Heart for Contribution to the World’s Musical Theatre.

DIRECTOR’S NOTESBy Rob Ruggiero

“Please, sir. I want some more.”

Those iconic words decidedly reflect the central theme in Charles Dickens’ famous story of a young boy’s difficult journey home. Although we all know Oliver! to be a musical interpretation of the great novel Oliver Twist, upon close examination, it becomes clear that a key source of inspiration for the play is the 1948 David Lean film. The raw truth, expressed so vividly in the film, made its way into the famed musical and is also at the core of our Goodspeed production.

The raw truth of Dickens’ colorful and extreme characters can pose a challenge when directing a production of Oliver!—a challenge that both excites and inspires me. In order to experience the joy and love of the story, we need to pass through darkness. We can’t ignore the dismal nature of Oliver’s pre-London escapades, but we can celebrate his journey. Oliver’s odyssey through life’s perils and joy is what we find so appealing.

Of course, it all starts with “What is Oliver! about?” It’s about many things: a desire for family, community, class, oppression, facing adversity, change—but at the center of all these things is one little boy, whose innocence and pure soul alters the lives of the many people he encounters. In most cases, the change Oliver provokes comes from him simply being; his special connection to the people he meets stimulates change and action. What a transformative idea. That by simply being, his grueling and sometimes terrifying journey leads him to the love and family he is seeking.

Fundamentally, Oliver! is about finding community and home. On his quest for belonging, Oliver discovers a community in Fagin’s gang, as well as his fateful connections to Fagin and Nancy. Misguided as it might appear, it was certainly far better than his oppressive life in the workhouse. It is the Artful Dodger who initially offers Oliver a gateway to community and ultimately a sense of family and acceptance. I love the essential conflict between the criminal actions of this odd band of characters and the acceptance and sense of family they offer.

Oliver’s connection with Nancy has a powerful effect on her complicated relationship with Bill. The bond between Nancy and Bill is dangerous and difficult to understand—especially through the eyes of today’s audience. But it is also fascinating and inspiring to see Nancy feel empowered by her love and affection for Oliver. Sadly, she is unable to free herself from an abusive relationship soon enough.

Oliver meeting Fagin is key to the central action, and Fagin’s “intimate acquaintance” with Oliver exposes an emotional core in the story. Fagin, in particular, is a fascinating character to explore. The psychology of the character is complicated and complex. It seems clear that Fagin understands immediately that there is something special about Oliver, though he has no idea how much one little boy will change his world. There is a benevolence that is unexpectedly exposed. His encounter with Oliver transforms him, or at least challenges his journey forward. Maybe underneath the crafty thief is a decent man waiting to be revealed, whose situation and status just don’t allow it—or maybe it’s merely not in his nature.

I love the music-hall dimensions in Oliver! we experience in “Oom-Pah-Pah,” Nancy’s opening number of the second act. It’s “celebratory Englishness” helps define a particular musical style associated with the score. That liberating nature of “music-hall morality” is conveyed by Nancy throughout. This specific musical style is deeply connected to why this show had great critic and audience appeal when it premiered in the West End in 1960.

Perhaps because of its unique challenges (including a large number of children to be cast!), Oliver! is not often produced and hasn’t seen a Broadway revival in over 30 years. Experiencing this complex and marvelous musical through the intimate lens of Goodspeed Musicals is an extraordinary opportunity to encounter the show close up and personal. As a director, the opportunity to share this story in this very special space is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.

We have compiled an exceptional cast of wonderful character actors and children from New York, along with some talented local children, to collaborate on this unique production. This will also be my first partnership with the wonderfully talented James Gray, our NYC-based British choreographer. James’ passion for the material and his authentic connection to that world elevates our production and inspires me to think outside the box. James joins my amazingly talented team of long-time creative partners (our music director, and the set, costume, lighting and sound designers) who have worked hard to create the world in which we can share this inspiring story of perseverance.

Welcome to the world of Oliver!.

Where We’ve BeenGoodspeed’s beginnings date back to 1963 when we opened our doors as a professional musical theatre in an historic building on the banks of the Connecticut River in East Haddam. Under the direction of Michael Price from 1968 to 2014, Goodspeed transformed from a struggling entity into a non-profit arts organization with a mission. At first, Goodspeed’s commitment was to discover rarely produced musicals from the repertoire, reworking them and bringing them to life. We were also intent on adding to the repertoire by discovering and nurturing promising new musicals presented at both The Goodspeed and The Terris Theatre in neighboring Chester.

In our history, we have produced over 250 musicals, including over 70 world premieres, and exported 21 productions to Broadway. Goodspeed stands as the first regional theatre in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre.

Who We Are TodayGoodspeed Musicals mounts both new and newly revived musicals each year on our main stage at The Goodspeed in East Haddam and on our second stage, The Terris Theatre, in Chester–a total of more than 400 performances during the April to December season, attracting 130,000 patrons to the Connecticut River Valley. We stand at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical, simultaneously reinventing the classics and inventing new ones. We attract well-known icons of the theatre world and foster emerging talent among composers, lyricists, and librettists. Each year, thousands of actors, directors, choreographers, and technicians aspire to come to Goodspeed to practice their craft. Among millions who know and love this art form–and those who appreciate its history and enduring appeal–Goodspeed is widely recognized as “The Home of the American Musical.”

Throughout the year, and intensively during the winter months, Goodspeed addresses issues unique to the field by offering innovative and highly-sought after programs through our Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre, including the celebrated Musical Theatre Institute providing programs for aspiring musical theatre professionals. The Arts Education Collaboration provides art-education programs for underserved Connecticut youth. The Festival of New Musicals features students from The Hartt School and the Boston Conservatory performing staged readings of three brand-new musicals, industry-related seminars, a symposium, and cabaret performances. Each winter, Goodspeed also hosts the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony that invites musical theatre writing teams to retreat from daily life for a four-week residency and concentrate solely on writing new musicals. In addition, Goodspeed serves as a resource for the preservation of the art form through our Scherer Library of Musical Theatre, the second most extensive musical theatre research library in the United States.

The Future We EnvisionThe Goodspeed campus will continue to serve as a thriving artist colony where the creative process informs the work on our stages and expanding educational programs. We aspire to serve as a safe haven where a singular commitment to discovery and innovation will enrich the field with the next generation of musical theatre artists.

The Goodspeed has endured as a majestic presence on the Connecticut River since it was built in 1876 by William H. Goodspeed, a shipping and banking magnate and avid theatre lover. Since that time, The Goodspeed has lived two lives: the first as a bustling center of commerce, housing a theatre, professional offices, steamboat passenger terminal, and a general store; and the second, after a period of neglect and deterioration, as a magnificent professional musical theatre fully restored in 1963 to its original splendor.

Goodspeed’s history goes back to its opening night on October 24, 1877, when a repertory group presented the comedy Charles II and the farces Box and Cox and Turn Him Out. Featured performers of the day were brought to East Haddam by steamboat, many directly from theatres in New York.

After William Goodspeed’s death, the theatre was eventually sold and used as a storage depot for the State Highway Department. The building was marked for demolition in 1958, but local preservationists became interested, and in 1959 The Goodspeed Opera House Foundation was organized to restore and reactivate the theatre. With the cooperation of the State of Connecticut and the support of donor-members, The Goodspeed was restored and rededicated on June 18, 1963 with the opening of the musical Oh Lady! Lady!!

HISTORY OF THE GOODSPEED

The mission of Goodspeed Musicals is to be the leader in preserving and producing musical theatre of the highest quality by:
