D2N2 Skills for Productivity Objectives of the Day:• Share and further develop understanding of the sector locally• Provide an opportunity to share what is being done, and showcase good news• Bring you up to date on the work of the Employer Led Sector Consultative Task
Groups and the Development of their Action Plans• Share the Top Ten Asks of the sector, and its expectations• Understand better which of the Asks can be addressed currently• Joint development of actions plan to tackle challenges where more joint work may
be required• Identify where D2N2 LEP may need to ask for additional freedoms and flexibilities
to enable the Skills sector to better support employers locally• Developing a sector specific ONA/TNA

SECTOR UPDATE
Sector Overview An Overview of the Food and Drink Manufacturing SectorOpportunities:
• Food and Drink Manufacturing businesses employ an estimated 16000 people in D2N2 LEP area, 16% of GB sector workforce
• D2N2 F&D Man. Business are 5.5% more productive than GB average• The sector is particularly important for a number of the local areas, particularly the Peak
District National Park, Newark & Sherwood, Bassetlaw and Amber Valley• Sector grew in D2N2 by 5.4% (~900 jobs) from 2008 – 2010• Minimum of 400 new jobs to be created in sector over next three years• Significant upskilling opportunities for people in the sector and new entrants• More high skilled opportunities in the sector as a result of internationally recognised
advanced manufacturing approaches and standards
Sector Overview 2An Overview of the Food and Drink Manufacturing SectorIssues and Challenges:
• SME market: 47% of businesses have 5 staff or fewer, 77% have fewer than 20. • The sector is moving towards a more highly skilled workforce – e.g. advanced manufacturing
techniques, EU & Global standards, productivity and performance improvements, regulatory and compliance requirements.
• Less public funding to support high level skills development.• Leadership and Management in the sector needs supporting to help them implement the
changes, and recognise their training needs.• More emphasis needed on ‘Grow your own’, rather than bringing in overseas workforce. • More joined up work required to promote career pathways to young people, teachers and
parents.
Sector Skills Delivery Overview
• In 2013/14, 212 Food and Drink manufacturing Apprenticeships were delivered in D2N2 (Delivery postcode). Down from 516 in 2012/13.
• Advanced manufacturing increased by ~300 over the same period.• Difficult to track Workplace Learning or Classroom Based Learning for the sector.
Much crosses multiple sectors.
However....• 27% of manufacturing vacancies unfilled as a result of Skills Shortages• 62% of Employers in EM report being unable to recruit appropriate candidates• 100k People with L4+ skills projected to be needed by all sectors across D2N2 by
2022 Why such a mismatch?
Skills Consultative Task Groups
• Following the publication of the Skills for Growth Strategy, D2N2 LEP established business-led Skills Consultative Task Groups, to inform, consult, and identify how economic impact for their sector can be maximised through driving growth, workforce development, training and employment for local people. • Food and Drink Manufacturing SCTG chaired by Fay Davies,
Food and drink forum• SCTGs included local Businesses, Universities, Colleges
Training Providers and Schools• Following a review of available information and consultation
with the sector developed a list of the Top 10 Skills Asks
Sector Top 10 Asks• Better LMI – for initial baseline data capture and identification of growth and skill
needs.• Leadership Mentoring and Development – Delivery of business to business mentoring
to SMEs (Large/medium successful businesses supporting growth in SMEs).• Sales and marketing – Delivering opportunities in terms of sector specific skils training
and sector based localised campaigns (ie source/buy local).• Food Safety Training and Information in both industry and schools – up-skill and inform
young people, their parents and other adults prior to entering any food workplace or establishment.
• Technical expertise – Dedicated promotion, recruitment, delivery and additional support as the sector has a critical lack of food specialists and Graduates within the UK are reducing in numbers (2 UoN).
• Marketing skills – sector specific• Promotion around ‘Food’ and career paths in order to generate interest and future
employees but also to showcase the D2N2 area as having a wealth of food related opportunities for other users – a food destination).
• Coordination of work placement coordination across the food sector for both 14 – 16 year olds, traineeships, apprenticeships and undergraduate/graduates to ensure familiarity of a food workplace)
Expectations of the Sector• More sharing of expertise
• Large companies to SMEs• Colleges and providers with each other
• Develop programme of awareness raising of the value of Skills and training in management of SMEs.
• The sector must retain and grow talent - Food Scientists & Technologists, Process/Lean Engineers
• More local focus on the F&D manufacturing sector is needed.INCREASES & DECREASES OF JOB TYPES OVER THE NEXT 3 YRS (Without additional funding):• Management - INCREASE Sales -INCREASE• Marketing - INCREASE Production /Operative - INCREASE• IT - INCREASE Accounts - INCREASE• Specialist / Technical - DECREASENote: 'Specialist / Technical' will be more in demand over coming years, indicating an increasing skills gaps in the industry.
