Edina teen banking on chess Matt Dahl recently wonfull-ride scholarship at national tournament BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS

A checkmate, rather than a checkbook, will send an Edina teen to college nextyear.

Matt Dahl, 17, won a full-ride collegescholarship to The University of Texas atDallas at the U.S. Chess Federation’s 2011National Scholastic K-12 Championship.

He beat out all otherhigh school seniors in the12th Grade Championshipduring the tournamentNov. 18-20 in Dallas, Texas, nabbing the scholarshipawarded by the school tothe 12th grade winner.

“It was really tense butI’m really excited aboutit,” said Matt, who wasimpressed when he visited the school, oneof few colleges with a competitive chessteam, earlier this fall. He plans to major inbusiness there.

While he has long competed at a nation-al level, this was the first time he decidedto enter the grade-level event, where stu-dents compete only against others in theirsame class.

The K-12 National Championship drew1,182 players, including three higher-ratedmasters in his grade. Matt, who is a nation-al master, played seven 90-minute roundsover the course of the weekend, somequite close.

“At the end of one round I had one sec-ond and he had five seconds left,” Mattsaid. “I offered him a draw right before orI would have lost on time. There were a lotof crazy games.”

Matt said he began playing chess whenhe was in the third grade, and traveled tohis first national tournament the follow-ing year. He said the game is appealing to

both his creative and competitive sides.“It’s a high stress game, but it’s a lot of

fun if you do well,” Matt said. “I like thecompetition.”

For the past several years, he hastrained once a week with coach VictorAdler, who has reached international mas-ter rating – one of the highest in the chessworld.

He currently competes on the chessteam at Saint Thomas Academy inMendota Heights. In 2010, he was co-champion at the Minnesota SchoolChess Association’s High School ChessChampionship, where St. Thomas wonthe team title and went on to place 11thin the nation.

Two years ago, he also made it into theU.S. Chess Federation’s prestigious U.S.Cadet Championship open to the top eightplayers in the United States under age 16.

He plans to compete this April in theU.S. Chess Federation’s National HighSchool Championship being held inMinneapolis. But for the most part, Mattsaid he now attends at tournaments with-out age restrictions where he competesamong adults.

He said he’s looking forward to beingpart of a highly competitive team at TheUniversity of Texas at Dallas. He said theteam atmosphere brings a lot to the game.Being on the 2010 Saint Thomas chessteam was one of his favorite experiences.A player he knew through tournamentsmoved to the area that year from Michiganand joined. Matt shared the state title withPrashantha Amarasinghe, who went on towin the national title.

For young chess players, Matt advisesparticipating in the School ChessAssociation, which has events for stu-dents every Saturday. In between chessgames, they have time to eat pizza anddo other fun activities, he said.

“You have to get involved,” Matt said.“Some people get really into taking les-sons and studying hard. It’s nice to havefun with it at first and see what hap-pens.”

Students to act in Guthrie’s‘A Christmas Carol’BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Christmas came early for two Edinayouth.

They’ll appear in more than 50 perform-ances before the end of the month. Thougha lot of work, the aspiring actor and actresssaid they wouldn’t wish for anything elsethis holiday season.

“I really like the experience. I loverehearsing. I love performing. I just love itall. It’s such a great experience,” saidAlexis.

Quinn and Alexis appear in the 13-mem-ber children’s ensemble in CharlesDickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” now in its37th year at the Guthrie. The play, showingon the Wurtele Thrust Stage, is directed by

Joe Dowling and features a script by Britishplaywright Crispin Whittell.

Both Quin and Alexis are students atFAIR School Crystal, which has a focus onarts education. For Quinn, a fourth-graderwho also studies acting at HarmonyTheater Company and School in St. LouisPark, his Guthrie debut began with a visitto the adjacent Mill City Farmers Marketthis summer.

“I just stared up at the Guthrie and Iloved it so much,” Quinn said.

He told his parents Tom and AliciaJenkins that his face would grace the side ofthe building. They took him to a showing of“H.M.S. Pinafore” in August. A couple ofdays later Quinn saw online that theGuthrie was holding an audition for “AChristmas Carol.”

Quinn said he enjoys acting, singing andperforming in front of an audience.

“I like to see the reactions to my partsand other people’s parts,” he said. “It’s veryspecial to do theater.”

After an audition, call back and meetingwith the director, he came home fromschool to good news.

“[My mom] just couldn’t hold in hersmile,” he said. “I just started screaming. Icalled almost everyone I knew and toldthem I got the part.”

Actually five parts – Wimple’s son,Belle’s son, a guest at the Fezziwig party, school boy and Ignorance – in addition tobeing the understudy for Tiny Tim. In onescene, he’s on stage with Robert O. Berdahl, lead in “H.M.S. Pinafore,” who plays theGhost of Christmas Present and other char-acters.

“It’s just amazing in how just a fewmonths, this guy he wasstaring up at from the audi-ence, he’s now workingwith him,” said dad TomJenkins.

Patrice Torrez shares asimilar story about takingher daughter Alexis to “AChristmas Carol” at theGuthrie a few years ago.

“It really touched mebecause she looked up atthe play and she turned to me and said‘Mommy, I’m going to do that. That’s goingto be me someday.’ A few years later hereshe is,” said Patrice Torrez, who was look-ing forward to attending several of theshows with husband Amador and sonEmmanuel Torrez, 6.

“It’s wonderful to see your kids discoverwhat it is that they want to do. It’s wonder-ful to see the excitement,” she said.

Alexis, a seventh-grader at FAIR whoalso recently started training at theLundstrum Center for the Performing Arts

in Minneapolis, said she auditions for any-thing she can. This summer she was in a

Fringe Festival show andhas been in several schoolproductions and donesome extra and commer-cial work.

“I like the feeling ofbeing on stage entertain-ing people. It just feels real-ly great,” she said. “I canbe anybody I want, and beanything and do anything.

It’s like a whole new world.”In “A Christmas Carol,” she appears as a

street urchin, a guest at the Fezziwig party, and in a country scene in EbenezerScrooge’s visit to the past. She said herfavorite is the Fezziwig party.

“It’s really fun. There’s a lot of dancingand cheering,” she said.

Alexis and Quinn said rehearsals, whichbegan three weeks before opening night, were a lot of work, but worth it. In the firsttwo weeks, the children’s ensemble cameafter school until about 9:30 p.m. The finalweek of rehearsals ran about 10-hour days. Both described the cast like a big family, and said they have enjoyed being on stageand learning from the adult thespians.

“I’ve learned so many things I don’t evenknow if I can list them all,” Quinn said, naming respect for other actors and thedirector as one.

Alexis said she has learned that “no mat-ter where you are, what you’re in, you haveto be on your absolute best behaviorbecause directors talk to other directors.”

Their advice to show respect to others isa lesson that perhaps would have helpedScrooge avoid visits from the three ghostsof Christmas too.

Jet packs and thought pods and moreGift giving is easy, when money is noobject

I think for the first time Iwill try online Christmas shop-ping this year. It seems easier, and the options seem wider. Ihave made no purchases yet,but my hunt has begun, and Ihave found some doozies. Here,I will share some discoveriesfrom a recent online window-shopping session — all things Iplan on purchasing as gifts, assuming I find a couple mil-lion dollars in my the pocket ofmy winter jacket when I dust itoff for the season.

Picking the right gift can behard, unless it’s a jet pack. AndI found an ingenious one, calledthe Jet-Lev Flyer ($130,000) thatshoots the operator 20 feet intothe air, powered by water that itsucks up via hose, regurgitat-ing it as a punishing, propellingblast. Whoever is lucky enoughto find this one under the treewill have to wait for spring, however — or go on vacation —before they can use it, as thedevice only works on bodies ofwater.

But it is not your only jet

pack option. A manufacturercalled Martin Aircraft makesone that goes for only $86,000,and is said to achieve 30 min-utes of flight time. The compa-ny calls it the safest jet pack inthe world. It’s the Volvo of jetpacks.

It seems what we’re dealingwith here, when pickingbetween these two packs is, dowe want to rocket around, fun-in-the-sun, beer-commercialstyle with the Jet-Lev watermodel? Or, do we want some-thing a little more practical, like the Martin Aircraft pack? Ithink there’s room for both.

For quieter times I foundsomething called theInspirational Archipod. The$40,000, 13-feet-tall, 9-feet-in-diameter igloo-shaped cocoonis designed to imbue the occu-pant with maximum creativity.Because you’re in a dome, yousee? And ideas really bouncearound in there. TheInspirational Archipod is shin-

gled by the very creative andhandsome Western Red Cedar, which covers the double insu-lated walls. A gull-winged dooropens up to the dome-y interior, which features walls with novisible joints that might trapinspiration, creativity orenlightenment. Portholes, anda clear top that hinges open, allow whiffs of brilliance tofloat in.

I foresee a bright futurewhere Inspirational Archipodsdot bucolic corporate campus-es across America, ushering insome sort of Age of Aquariusand the 20-hour work week. For now, I bet some people inCalifornia have them, at least.

If you like motorcycles orscience fiction, I might get youthe Tron-cycle ($55,000). Basedon the movie “Tron: Legacy,”the Tron-cycle — actuallycalled the Light Cycle on thewebsite that sells it — is streetlegal and accented with stripsof electro-luminescent light-ing that is turned to a blur by afuel injected Suzuki 996cc, 4-stroke engine.

Taking the hunt back todomestic territory, I have alsoconsidered my friends andfamily who prefer that theirhome décor be made of

firearms. For them I will pur-chase the elegant AK-47 tablelamp. The lamp’s 24-inchporcelain neck is, of course, apretend AK-47 resting uprighton its butt. It costs $445, whichI imagine is the price youmight pay on the black marketfor the real thing. I am not infavor of guns — I have nevereven fired one — so I don’twant to belabor the point, but Imust mention, the companythat makes the AK-47 lamp,Loaded Objects Ceramics, alsomakes one modeled after a Tri-9mm handgun. The classyensemble is completed with aset of chess pawns shaped likegrenades.

The above is just a quicksampling. Dig, and you’ll findsome gems yourself. Check outthe perfectly named thisiswhy-imbroke.com, or uncrate.comor hammacher.com for moreoutrageous gift ideas. Butremember your neighbors, too.Maybe some these zany, high-end items can only be obtainedonline, but your local retailersalso could use your business.Maybe buy the jet pack online, but your shops can help youwith the more pedestrianitems. That is what responsibleconsumerism is all about.

The Edina City Council approved cre-ation of the steering committee itsmeeting Tuesday, Nov. 1. The process toidentify and name Edina neighborhoodsis the first step of a greater city initia-tive to promote neighborhood associa-tions.

“Neighborhood associations build a

sense of community among residentsand help to create a communicationchannel between residents and theircivic institutions,” Assistant CityManager Karen Kurt said.

When the initiative is completed, allEdina residents will have the opportuni-ty to form and join a neighborhood asso-ciation recognized by the city. A similarneighborhood program has existed suc-cessfully in St. Louis Park for severalyears.

Volunteers interested in joining theneighborhood identification steeringcommittee should apply by Friday, Dec.9, with their name, address, contactinformation and a short summary ofhow their background complements thecommittee’s mission.

Applications can be sent to [email protected] or mailed to Kurtat Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St.,Edina, MN 55424.

Kurt will interview candidates andpresent a list of proposed committeemembers to the city council in January.

Pool issue aboutpriority, notconfrontationTo the editor:

Since my family joined the EdinaSwim Club in 2001, the club has roughlydoubled in size. The Aquajets was start-ed in 2002 and grew astronomically intoone of the largest clubs in Minnesota. At the recent Edina Park Board meet-ing, the use of pool time between thesetwo clubs was inaccurately painted bysome as an us-versus-them confronta-tion. The truth is the Edina Swim Clubis simply trying to get a ruling on thepriority scheduling of a limitedresource within Edina: pool time.

The Edina Swim Club has alwaysdealt with priority scheduling of poolresources. We are allocated pool timeafter girls and boys high school, syn-chronized swimming, water aerobicsand water safety. Our club pays to useevery pool lane available in Edina:South View and Valley View middleschools and Edinborough. We also reg-ularly rent lanes at Blake and otherpools. We frequently lose the use of

some or all of these pools as we lose ourpriority. It’s something our club has todeal with.

The Aquajets are fortunate to havetheir own 13-lane pool (roughly equiva-lent to South View and Valley View com-bined) in Eden Prairie over which theyhave complete control of scheduling. They can use their pool whenever theychoose, without dealing with priority.

Please put inaccurate rumors andemotional responses aside. There’snothing confrontational about priorityscheduling. It’s simply the implementa-tion of Edina policy to allocate limitedEdina public resources to serve themajority of Edina residents.

Fireplace changefeel-good symbolismTo the editor:

I commend you on your wonderfulsense of ironic humor in placing thebonfire photo and ban fire article in jux-taposition on the front page of yourSept. 29 issue.

Since the Edina City Council haspassed this, it is another example of thetriumph of feel-good symbolism overpracticality. But the real objective, ofcourse, is to garner votes from the ganggreen. Commissions are instituted tolend legitimacy to things that legislativebodies have already decided they wantto do. They start with some seeminglyinsignificant act in order to establishthe principle and then expand it adinfinitum. It’s called getting the camel’snose in the tent.

Recently lightning started a forestfire in northern Minnesota. It sentsmoke into the air from 150 squaremiles of woods. I figure that eliminatingtwo fireplaces in Edina will compensatefor that in, oh, about 750,000 years. Whatthe city council ought to do is take anote from King Canute and ban light-ning.

Julie Mellum should take HarryTruman’s advice: “If you can’t stand theheat, stay out of the kitchen.”

with emails and phone calls from fami-lies of interested players and people whowant to start teams. She said the organi-zation needs at least one dedicated vol-unteer to get a team up and running in acommunity.

“I get a little overwhelmed but I enjoyit. I want to see more people on the ice,”she said.

Her son Sam Cashin, 18, a senior atEdina High School, participated in thefirst six-week program and continues toplay on the Edina Stingers. She said hehad been attending his sister’s hockeygames as her team’s stick boy for yearsbefore that, but never had the opportuni-ty to be on a team himself.

It’s been a great experience, she said.Participants of every age and ability

are accepted to play. The Edina team hasplayers ranging from age 4 to into their40s. Coaches form lines based on abilityso that during games, teams are evenlymatched. Each team meets for an hourevery Sunday November through March

Williamson said “it’s a less about age, size and ability,” and more about givingeveryone access to the ice.

His son Brett Williamson, 22, joinedthe team to keep active after finishinghis high school career in adaptive floorhockey. He said he enjoys seeing peoplehe knows from work and school.

“I have a lot of friends here,” saidBrett Williamson.

Among them is his younger brotherRyan Williamson, a senior at EdenPrairie High School, who helps at prac-tices and announces some games. Manysiblings and high school hockey playersvolunteer to help as assistant coaches.

“There’s a lot of camaraderie,” saidEdina resident George Holden, chair ofthe Minnesota Special Hockey Board, whose daughter Allie, 23, is on the EdinaStingers. “She enjoys seeing the otherplayers every week.”

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling?Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are youafraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safeit is? When was the last time you used it?

The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplaceand Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both yourconfidence and your chimney. Did you know that watercauses more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Yourchimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantlyexposed to the elements. They are generally constructed ofbrick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suf-fer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water.Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Citiescause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetratedexpands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interi-or and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalledand broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry andmetal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayedmortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst casescenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork.

There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensivemeasure to prevent water penetration to the flue and insidechimney elements. We sell and install locally manufacturedcaps for as little as $99.

2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals itfrom the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneysare built with an inadequate crown constructed from com-mon mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will notwithstand years of prolonged moisture exposure withoutcracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate thechimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang dripedge. This assures the water will shed helping to preventerosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces.Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from thesponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of isthe most important element to preventing deterioration. AtAirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line ofSaver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of theseproducts allows us to pass on manufacturers material war-ranties of up to 15 years to our clients.

3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts ofwater. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wickingit to the chimney interior. Products we use are specificallydeveloped for use as waterproofing agents on masonrychimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means theyallow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allowswater that has penetrated the chimney to escape while pre-venting additional water from entering from the outside.Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available shouldnever be used because they trap moisture inside actuallyaccelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable seal-er with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chim-ney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save youhundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs.Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has becomequite serious. Although these prevention measures may costyou a few dollars they can save you a lot more by prevent-ing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s atAirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obliga-tion repair estimates in the Western Metro area. CallJohn, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligationestimate. spread doesn’t include all seven, butoffers updated dishes like tuna cream inphyllo cups, linguine with clam sauceand fillet of cod Florentine.

Recipes for the meal are featured inHobbins’ newest cookbook“Celebrations with Carmela’s Cucina.”Released in November by Nodin Press, itoffers full menus for 14 special eventsthroughout the year.

“We always celebrate everything in abig way, whether it’s a birthday, a wed-ding shower, an anniversary – there’srecipes that include all of those celebra-tions in the book,” she said.

Hobbins began teaching cookingclasses and hosting culinary tours toItaly after retiring as an elementaryschoolteacher several years ago. Shewrote her first cookbook “Carmela’sCucina,” now in its fifth printing, in2005. It features about 150 of her“favorite Italian recipes from antipastito dolce,” she said.

She decided to release a menu cook-book after hearing from students in hercooking classes – she teaches private les-sons in homes and at stores such asCooks of Crocus Hill and throughorganizations like Edina CommunityEducation – that the most difficult thingis knowing what recipes to put together.Due to the economy, people are alsoentertaining at home more than theyused to, she said.

Hobbins, who grew up in Des Moines,Iowa, where her family owns Tursi’sLatin King restaurant, said she hasalways enjoyed cooking for people.

“I learned to cook from my grand-mothers and mother,” said Hobbins, who moved to Edina in 1983 with herhusband of nearly 37 years, BobHobbins. “Cooking was a really, reallyimportant thing for them. It was a wayto show love and I feel the same wayabout it.”

She’s been hosting parties all of herlife. In the introduction to the latestcookbook, she tells about the “coketailparties” she began throwing in her par-ents’ recreation room at age 16, the lav-ish meals she planned with her post-col-lege roommates, and the silver, Chinaand crystal on her wedding registry putto use at dinner parties over the years.

For each occasion, “Celebrationswith Carmela’s Cucina” offers recipesfor about six courses – an antipasti, salad, soup or pasta, main dish, veg-etable and dessert – as well as wine pair-ing tips from her husband and otherhosting ideas, like decorations. Mosteverything is Italian, or has an Italiantwist.

“Fourth of July is a uniquelyAmerican celebration, as isThanksgiving. So for the Fourth of Julywe have the antipasti skewers,” Hobbinssaid.

The skewers are made with tortellini, grape tomatoes, basil, artichoke hearts, mozzarella balls, olives and sliced sala-mi. Many of the items in the book can beprepared in advance. She said she feelsbad for people who entertain but spendmost of their time alone in the kitchen.

“If it’s the kind of meal that requiresa lot of last minute stuff, I just haveeveryone come into the kitchen, givethem a glass of wine and some antipastiand they either cook with me or they’rewith me when I’m cooking,” she said. “Ihave to be part of the party otherwisethere’s not point inviting people over.”

One of her favorite celebrations isNew Year’s Eve, usually a fancy eventhosted in her Edina home with the bestlinens, champagne, hors d’oeuvres and asit down dinner. In the book she sug-gests mussels with remoulade sauce andspinach-stuffed mushrooms to start, anavocado and grapefruit salad, crownroast of pork with fruited dressing andbuttered carrots, followed by a spumoniice cream bombe.

“We like to get all dressed up andreally have a good time. That’s our spe-cial night. We’re all decked out,” shesaid.

At the same time, she said the mostimportant thing about gathering friendsand family is the chance to really talk

After falling to Breck 3-0 the firstnight of the Cake-Eater Classic Nov. 25at Braemar Arena, the Edina High girlshockey team made a nice recovery todefeat Blake 8-2 Nov. 26.

Trautz led the attack against Blakewith two goals while the other standout

for Edina was goaltender Maddie Dahl. The split in the Cake-Eater Classic

left Edina with a 3-1-1 record.“It was a good tournament,” said

Slominski. “We can always count on get-ting two quality games. The champi-onship game went into overtime withBreck winning 4-3 over Benilde-St.Margaret’s.”

The Rampage’s coaching staff consistsof Herrmann, Josh Burhans (co-headcoach) and Kitt Guerrier (juniorvarsity/ninth grade).

The Rampage’s first meet is 9 a.m.Saturday, Dec. 3, at Fridley High School.Richfield will travel to North St. Paul for a5 p.m. conference meet Thursday, Dec. 8.

The Richfield/Edina team’s first homemeet is 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, againstFarmington and Minnetonka.

Richfield will host an eight-team tour-nament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17.

Hockey team adjusts tonew lineup in tourney

Many of the faces familiar to EdinaHigh boys hockey fans are gone now, gone from a team that finished 19-9-2last season.

And that meant fans were referringto their programs frequently duringthe Turkey Trot Tournament Nov. 25-26at Plymouth Ice Center.

Both of the Hornets’ games ended inshutouts with Edina winning the open-er 4-0 over Buffalo and losing in thefinals 3-0 to Maple Grove.

“We have a lot of new faces,” saidEdina head coach Curt Giles. “It willtake a while for the team to establish anidentity.”

High-scoring forwards StevenFogarty and Michael Sit graduatedfrom last year’s roster along with stardefenseman Max Everson. The Hornetstook another hit when forward BenWalker decided to forgo his senior sea-son in favor of Junior hockey.

“In the Buffalo game, I thought wetook it to them pretty well,” said Giles. The shots on goal bear that out. Edinahad 36 to 10 for the Bison.

Miguel Fidler, Andy Jordahl,Connor Hurley and Tim Spicola scoredfor the Hornets.

Fidler, Bo Brauer, Derek Malmquist,Alec Oesterreich, Parker Reno, HenryRose and Jack Walker had assists whileConnor Beaupre was the winner ingoal.

Goalie Tim Harkess was the No. 1star for Buffalo with 32 saves.

In the championship game withMaple Grove, the Hornets couldn’t get asingle shot past goalie Kyle Koop, who

made 23 saves.“Maple Grove has nine seniors and

could be among the top four or fiveteams in the state,” said Giles.

While the Hornet team is largelynew this year, Giles has several provenplayers.

Edina’s captains, Nick Leer, LouieNanne and Parker Reno, all have statetournament experience.

Giles had good things to say abouthis captains.

“Nick is a wonderful leader and atireless worker,” said Giles. “I expect alot from Louie – scoring and skating onour power-play and penalty-killingunits.

“Parker is a strong defenseman whoskates well and shoots the puck well. Heis a very mature junior.”

Another mature junior is AnthonyWalsh, one of the most physical playersin the Lake Conference. Matt Nelsonalso lends experience to the Hornets’young lineup.

For at least the first part of the sea-son, Giles said he would use both varsi-ty goalies, Beaupre and WillyBenjamin.

“The next few weeks, we will start tofind out what this team is all about andwhat it can be,” said Giles.

Next for the Hornets is a non-confer-ence game against Lakeville South at 3p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Lakeville’sHasse Arena.

Hornet boys open with winover Buffalo Bison squad, lose to Maple Grove, 3-0
