Competition for health professions education is fierce, so you can’t afford to take it easy. And colleges don’t just look at your transcript. They look for students who have sought out opportunities to explore the field of their choice. These steps will help you get ready for a health career: Take all the math and science courses your high school has to offer and keep your grades up; Participate in a health career interest group through your high school or college, Scouts or 4-H club; Volunteer at a hospital or nursing home; Research health career options through Web sites or libraries; Arrange for a job shadowing experience with someone working in the health profession that interests you; Work in a summer internship program at your local hospital; Ask lots of questions of your school counselor, people who work in the field that interests you and colleges that educate those professionals.
